Abstract

A lighting apparatus that provides an energy efficient illumination source that is suitable for use as an interior, ambient lighting source is described. The lighting apparatus comprising a light guide ( 2 ) suitable for guiding light coupled to a first surface ( 3 ) to a second surface of the light guide thus providing a first light output ( 7a) emitted from the second surface ( 6a). The light guide further comprises a plurality of extraction features ( 10 ) located on a further surface thereof the extraction features being arranged so as to redirect a portion of the guided light so as to provide a second light output that is more diffuse than the first light output.
