  • Generally IT equipment cabinets are used to store IT equipment and cables. These cabinets are basically enclosures comprising of a frame to which a plurality of side covers and door panels are mounted. The side cover and panels are mounted on to the cabinet using screws, hooks, etc and the door panels are mounted on the cabinet using hinges.
  • the door panels and side covers are removed, and are mounted back on the frame once the equipment is stored. Once the door and the side covers are mounted on the cabinet, to make any change and/or remove the equipment that is stored, the side covers and the door panels need to be removed.

  • the present invention provides a central lock system having a removable lock mechanism (200) that includes a slide-able lock plate, wherein the lock mechanism is placed at the top and bottom of lock side of the door (230) .
  • the lock mechanism (200) also includes a driving mechanism for driving the lock plates.
  • the lock mechanism (200) enables the door (230) to be locked or unlocked so as to restrict access to the interior of the cabinet.
  • the driving mechanism can be a rack-pinion gear arrangement or a quarter turn arrangement for locking/unlocking the door.
  • the hinge mechanism (100) and the lock mechanism (200) have the same structural specification by way of length, breadth and height i.e. they are. congruent and hence the placement of the hinge and lock mechanism on the door can be inter-changed to allow the door to be mounted and opened in a desired direction i.e. left to right or right to left.

  • the side cover latching, and locking assembly is essentially used to prevent access to the cabinet from the sides.
  • the assembly comprises of hooking tabs (202) and a latch (204) placed on the inner-side of the side cover (240) .
  • the hooking tabs (202) are placed at the top and center periphery of the side cover to align and hold the side cover in a closed position with the cabinet frame (210)
  • the latch (204) is preferably placed at the bottom periphery of the side cover, wherein the side cover (201) is first aligned and held on to the cabinet frame (210) using hooking tabs (202), and then the latch (204) is used to lock the side cover (201) onto the cabinet frame (210) .
  • the side covers (240) are thus locked from inside and does not allow any external threats to the equipment inside the cabinet. Further since the side cover (240) is hooked at ' the top and locked at the bottom, the side covers (240) don't collapse while dis-assembling or removing the side panels.

  • the mechanism comprises of a hinge housing element (10) which receives a latching plate (20) and is coupled together using clip-on bolts (30) .
  • the latching plate (20) is an elongated structure which extends longitudinally from its upper portion and varies in width towards its lower portion, with an angled protrusion (50) extending from the lowermost end.
  • the latching plate (20) is essentially flat with uniform thickness along the length of the latching plate.
  • the latching plate (20) is_ fabricated with a plurality of apertures, wherein a longitudinal aperture (12) is formed at the upper portion of the latching plate; a square aperture (14) is formed at the lower portion of the latching plate (20) ; and a circular aperture is formed on the angled protrusion (16) .
  • the housing element (10) of the hinge mechanism (100) is an elongated u-shaped structure wherein a wall (2) extends longitudinally and has two arms (4) extending perpendicularly along the length of the wall (2) and a protrusion (60) with a faying end.
  • the inner surface of the housing element receives the latching plate at a first mating section (70) formed on the two arms along the length of the housing element (10) .
  • a second mating section (40) which is like a groove is formed on the top of the housing element (10) to allow the hinge to be mounted on the cabinet .
  • the housing element (10) has two circular apertures (6) formed on the wall (2) of the housing element (10) .
  • the circular apertures (6) of the housing element (10) coincide with the longitudinal aperture (12) of the latching plate (20) when the latching plate (20) is inserted in the housing element (10); and is then coupled with the housing element (10) using clip-on bolts (30) such that the square aperture (14) of the latching plate (20) is latched relative to the faying end of the protrusion (60) of the housing element (10) .

  • the assembling and locking of the side covers onto the frame of the cabinet comprises of steps of, aligning the side covers by means of hooking tabs which are preferably placed at the top and center periphery of inner-side of the side cover; and locking the side covers onto the cabinet by means of a spring loaded lever which is preferably placed at the bottom periphery of inner-side the side cover.
  • the installation of the door latching and locking mechanism comprises the steps of, installing a hinge mechanism into the top and bottom hinge side of the door; and installing a lock mechanism into the top and bottom lock side of the door.
  • the hinge mechanism is mounted pivotally on the frame of the cabinet to enable the door to move between open and closed position, and the lock mechanism locks the door in a closed position after the hinge mechanism allows the door to move into closed position.
  • the above method may be reversed to access and/or dis-assemble the cabinet.
  • the defined system may provide easy and tool-less installation.
  • the defined system may be a compliance solution for the interchangeability of the door panel and may provide complete interchangeability.
  • the defined system may overcome the challenges of the current methodologies through the removable hinge and secured latching feature.
