- the information transmitted between the multimedia devices includes vendor specific information.
- the information transferred between each multimedia device includes the corresponding multimedia device name, manufacturer, model number, and specific serial number.
- the media server 220 In order to share the content among the components constituting the content control system, the media server 220 needs to know the codec information of the content that can be played between the components. To this end, the media server 220 previously stores codec information transmitted for each multimedia device in a database. A method of storing codec information in the media server 220 will be described with reference to FIG. 9.
- FIG. 9 is a diagram illustrating a method of providing content using codec information stored in a media server according to a second embodiment of the present invention.
- the media server 220 connects to at least one of the media renderer 230 and the control point 210, which are multimedia devices requesting connection.
- the media server 220 determines whether the connected multimedia device is the first connected multimedia device in step 915. If it is the first connected multimedia device, the media server 220 checks codec information received from the multimedia device in step 920. The media server 220 stores the codec information identified in step 925 in the database.
- the codec information includes information such as format information and size of content that can be reproduced in the multimedia apparatus. If the connected multimedia device is not connected for the first time, the media server 220 performs step 930.
- the media server 220 determines whether a content playback request is received from the connected multimedia device in step 930. If the content play request signal is received, the media server 220 checks the codec information corresponding to the multimedia device to which the content is to be played back from the codec information stored in the database (935).
- the media server 220 determines whether to perform content conversion according to the codec information identified in step 940. That is, the media server 220 compares the codec information of the content requested from the multimedia device with the codec information playable in the multimedia device stored in the database, and determines whether to convert the content.
- the media server 220 converts the content in step 945.
- the media server 220 transmits the converted content in step 950 to the corresponding multimedia device.
- the media server 220 performs step 950.
- the media server 220 has previously described a method of storing the codec information corresponding to the content that can be played in the multimedia device in advance and converting the codec information into the content that can be played in the multimedia device.
- a method of transmitting codec information which is information about a content that can be played by the multimedia apparatus, to the media server 220 will be described with reference to FIG. 10.
- FIG. 10 is a diagram illustrating a method for transmitting codec information in a multimedia apparatus according to a second embodiment of the present invention.
- the multimedia apparatus connects to the media server 220 according to a user's selection.
- the multimedia apparatus transmits codec information corresponding to the content that can be played to the connected media server 220.
- the codec information includes information about a video and audio format and a size of playable content. The codec information will be described later with reference to FIG. 11.
- the multimedia apparatus performs a function according to a user's selection in step 1020.
- the multimedia device is a media renderer 230 for outputting content
- the multimedia device may output content transmitted from the media server 220.
- the multimedia apparatus is the control point 210 for controlling the media renderer 230
- the multimedia apparatus transmits a signal input from the user to the media renderer 230 or the media server 220.
- FIG. 11 illustrates codec information transmitted to a media server according to the second embodiment of the present invention.
- the codec information transmitted by the multimedia apparatus to the media server 220 includes information about the video codec 1110 and the audio codec 1115.
- the multimedia device may transmit codec information to the media server 220 in the form of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) through IP. That is, as shown in FIG. 11, the multimedia apparatus may create and transmit codec information in HTML format.
- HTML Hyper Text Markup Language
- FIG. 12 illustrates a signal flow for sharing codec information in a content control system including a plurality of multimedia devices according to a second embodiment of the present invention.
- the media server 220 and the control point 210 are connected to transmit and receive data in step 1241.
- the control point 210 performs a function of outputting content, such as a mobile terminal
- the control point 210 transmits codec information on the content that can be played back to the media server 220 in step 1243.
- the media renderer 230 transmits codec information, that is, information about content that can be played by the media server 220, to the media server 220.
- the control point 210 and the media renderer 230 are described as separate devices, the present invention is not limited thereto.
- the control point 210 and the media renderer 230 may be implemented as one terminal. That is, in the case of a terminal including an output unit such as a display unit for outputting content and an input unit for sensing a signal input from a user, the control point 210 and the media renderer 230 may be implemented as one terminal.
- All multimedia devices connected to the media server 220 transmit the codec information, which is information on the content that can be played, to the media server 220.
- the media server 220 divides the received codec information for each multimedia device and stores the received codec information in a database.
- the media server 220 transmits the content of a format that can be played in a multimedia device that requests the content by using previously stored codec information.
- the media server 220, the control point 210, and the media renderer 230 perform the same process as in steps 841 to 883 of FIG. 8 from step 1251 to step 1285.
