Description
Extended Wear Shoe Liner with Silver BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a personal care item, primarily for men and women, but it can also be used by youngsters, too. The item is an insertable and selectively removable shoe insert which is intended to absorb moisture and odor.
Numerous shoe liners, inserts and insoles exist today with the primary objective of providing cushioning and/or support to the user. Most of these products are made of foams or plastics and designed to be long lasting. These insoles typically change the feel of the shoe while worn, due to the thickness of the products.
Other liners have been developed specifically for the absorption of sweat. Some of these products use agents such as activated charcoal or baking soda to eliminate odor, however, the effectiveness of such products diminishes over time and the shoes in which they are used begin to retain the wetness and odor.
There are also moisture absorbent liners that are disposable and low-cost. These liners do not destroy bacteria and odor. Instead, they require almost daily replacement to promote freshness and cleanliness creating an inconvenience to the user. Some are lined with an adhesive backing so that the liner can adhere to the original shoe insole. This type of liner often leaves behind a sticky residue or damages the original shoe insole upon removal. By not using an adhesive on the bottom of the present shoe line, but, however, still
maintaining an anti-slip backing, the current device is re-positionable, transferable between shoes, and does not damage the original shoe.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION
These needs may be met by the present shoe insert device, which is a thin and convenient, extended wear shoe liner that preserves the life of shoes by preventing interior wear and promotes a more comfortable and hygienic environment for the feet. The shoe liner is made up of a moisture absorbent, antimicrobial top layer and an anti-slip
bottom layer. Silver, a naturally occurring and proven antimicrobial, is incorporated into the top and/or bottom layers to destroy bacteria and odor within the shoes.
The top layer, which comes into direct contact with the bottom of foot, functions to keep the foot and shoe interior dry and odor free. It is made of a fabric, a woven or non- woven textile, which serves to absorb and wick away moisture from the foot. The textile is highly durable while also being soft and comfortable to the skin. By absorbing excess moisture, the top layer provides better traction for and prevents slippage of the feet within the body of the shoe. The top layer has a preferred thickness of less than 1mm to minimize the thickness of the shoe insert device. In other aspects of the shoe insert device, the top layer may comprise a thicker material to provide for added comfort and cushioning. The top layer also has a good abrasion resistance under dry and wet conditions as determined by the Martindale, Taber or similar abrasion resistance tests. In one embodiment, the top layer is bonded to the bottom layer by heat sealing, stitching, flame lamination or adhesive lamination. The bottom layer has anti-slip capabilities and prevents movement of the shoe liner in relation to the shoe without the use of adhesives. The bottom layer also has a preferred thickness of less than 1mm to minimize the thickness of the shoe liner, however, other aspects of the shoe insert device may allow for thicker materials for added comfort and cushioning. It is intended to grip the original shoe insole and allows for repositioning and removal without damaging or leaving residue on the surface to which it comes in contact with. It may also have raised ridges, nodes or some other type of textured pattern to provide additional traction within the shoe.
To maximize benefit and convenience for the user, the shoe insert device is durable, requiring replacement from one to two times per month to once every three to six months. This promotes shoe and foot hygiene particularly for those who do not wear socks with their shoes. The shoe insert product is intended to be manufactured and sold to the consumer in matched pairs fitted for the left and right curvatures of the feet and does not require trimming to size.

FIG. 2 is a top view of a one embodiment of the present invention, where the shoe liner provides full shoe length coverage.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a dual-layer shoe liner taken along line A-A in FIGS. 1 and 2.
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of a tri-layer shoe liner taken along line A-A in FIGS. 1 and 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
FIGS. 1 and 2 show two shapes of the proposed invention. The shoe liner 10 in FIG. 1 provides forefoot coverage of the shoe, spanning from the mid-foot to the toes. This embodiment allows for a one-size fits all approach without trimming to fit and provides shoe and foot protection for the forefoot area, the main source of moisture within shoes. Another embodiment, shoe liner 20 shown in FIG. 2, represents a version that covers the entire shoe length of the shoe extending from the forefoot area 21 to the heel area 22. This embodiment would be used within boots or athletic shoes, where the top of the foot is fully enclosed by the shoe thereby trapping more moisture within the shoe. Each representation, those shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, would be designed as a pair, with one piece shaped for the left foot curvature and one piece shaped for the right foot curvature.
The shoe liners 10 and 20 consist of a top material layer 31 and a bottom material layer 32 as shown by cross-section 30 in FIG. 3. The top material layer comes into direct contact with the bare foot while being used and therefore should be durable as well as comfortable to the skin. The preferred material for this top layer is a microdenier polyester textile identified as Traffic and available from Starensier Inc in Newburyport, MA. The Traffic material has a thickness of 0.85mm and a Martindale Abrasion resistance (Satra PM31) of 100,000 revs under both dry and wet conditions. Another suitable material is a polyester textile identified as ETC and available by Sheehan Associates in Topsfield, MA. ETC has a weight of 364 g/yd and thickness of 0.65mm. It has a Martindale Abrasion resistance (Satra TM 31-97) of 51,000 revs under dry conditions and 12,800 revs under wet conditions.
The top layer 31 is treated with silver, a naturally occurring and highly effective antimicrobial agent. The preferred method of incorporating silver into the top layer 31 is a topical application during the finishing stage of the manufacturing process. Silver can also be incorporated directly into the fiber master batch during synthetic fiber formation for better washing durability in the final shoe insert product. Additionally, silver can be applied as a universal and permanent coating on the yarn or fabric substrates to achieve higher and faster microbe kill rates in the final shoe insert product. One suitable agent is provided by Agion Technologies in Wakefield, MA. Agion antimicrobials operate at the surface of a product through the controlled release of silver ions which attack microbes and inhibit their growth.
Another silver-based additive, called SmartSilver™, is offered by NanoHorizons Inc. in Bellefonte, PA. SmartSilver nanotechnology enables natural silver to produce more microbe fighting silver ions. SmartSilver nanoscale silver particles bind permanently so antimicrobial efficacy and odor elimination last for the product's expected life.
Noble Biomaterials, headquartered in Scranton, PA, also offers a silver-based technology called X-STATIC®. X-STATIC® has a layer of pure silver permanently bonded to the surface of a textile fiber. It can be used in knits, wovens and non-wovens as either a filament or spun yarn. X-STATIC® offers all of the benefits known to be inherent to pure silver, delivered in a textile fiber.
The top layer 31 may also be treated with other additives that create further softness or provide wicking, antimicrobial and/or anti-odor functionality.
The bottom material layer 32 comes into direct contact with the interior sole of the shoe and is intended to provide grip capabilities, allowing the shoe liner to remain in place within the shoe. The bottom layer is not provided with adhesive as that often impacts on the ease of transfer of the insert from shoe to shoe and can damage the original shoe. Rather, the present device utilizes a non-slip bottom surface of the bottom layer and avoids using an adhesive. Thus, the present shoe insert is easily re-positionable, transferable between shoes, does not damage the original shoe and, yet, the non-slip surface characteristic maintains the insert in relative desired position beneath the foot and within the shoe. The non-slip characteristic of the bottom surface of the bottom layer may be provided by having its surface with raised undulating ridges, a series of raised nodes or some other type of textured pattern to provide additional traction for the insert within the shoe.
The preferred thickness of bottom layer 32 is less than 1mm, although other aspects of the invention may use thicker materials for added cushioning and comfort. One suitable material for the bottom layer is a foamed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) over net substrate, identified as E916 with a weight of 210 g/m and available through Changle Efit
Houseware Co in Jinfeng Town in Changle, China. The material has an open weave pattern with perforations to allow for circulation of air and moisture, thereby promoting breathability.
Another material that may be suitable for the bottom layer 32 is a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Microcell Composite Company in Rende Shiang, Taiwan (ROC) offers anti-skid TPE products that provide good grip to stop slipping and can be fixed securely without movement in dry and wet environments. Microcell TPE products are environmentally friendly and completely recyclable.
A third suitable material for the bottom layer 32 is a gel layer provided by PolyWorks Inc in Lincoln, RI. This gel material may provide some cushioning to the feet while also functioning to grip the shoe liner to the original shoe insole.
The bottom layer 32 may be treated with antimicrobial or deodorizing agents.
The top material layer 31 and bottom non-slip material layer 32 are bonded together by means of adhesive lamination, flame lamination, pressure sensitive adhesive, heat sealing or stitching. The edges of the shoe insert device, as shown at either end of the cross- sectional view of line A-A in FIG. 3 and FIG. 4, may be heat pressed and sealed to further secure bonding between layers 31 and 32.
Another embodiment of the shoe liner is shown by cross-section 40 in FIG. 4. The shoe liner consists of a top material layer 31, a bottom material layer 32 and a middle layer 33 to provide stiffness or additional cushioning. One suitable material for the middle layer 33 may be a PORON urethane offered by Rogers Corporation in Rogers, CT. PORON urethanes are high performance cushioning materials that provide impact absorption and moisture wicking benefits.
While the drawings and description illustrate preferred embodiments of the present invention, it should be understood that further variations and embodiments may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention.
