Abstract

The invention relates to a method for purifying acidic water in-situ, suppressing continuing pollutant mobilizations, and immobilizing metals, in particular heavy metals, arsenic, natural radionuclides, and free hydrogen ions by means of time-controlled and/or spatially controlled injections into contaminated water-saturated underground areas and zones, preferably into aquifers, and into contaminated groundwater, wherein a reactive aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and/or sodium sulfite and mixing water is introduced in a metered and targeted manner in order to treat and decontaminate said areas and zones and the groundwater in-situ. By means of the described method, considerable environmental, technical/technological, and economic advantages over known methods are achieved. Said advantages comprise performing targeted and low-cost in-situ treatments and in-situ decontaminations of the pollution centers, immobilizing already mobilized pollutants in contaminated groundwater, actively developing the hydro- and geochemical environmental conditions toward pre-mining conditions such that the continuing mobilizations of pollutants are suppressed by means of raising the pH and reducing the redox potential, promoting by means of the chemically induced changes of the hydro- and geochemical environment toward neutral, intermediate conditions of the microbiologically catalyzed sulfate reduction, limiting the duration of or avoiding longterm, high-cost conventional decontamination measures, and eliminating the need for disposal and landfilling.
