Definitions

  • the invention relates to a scented and/or flavoured cotton, methods of making the cotton, and methods of using the cotton.
  • the cotton may be used in the field of dentistry.
  • Dental procedures can engender anxiety and /or fear in dental patients.
  • Dental procedures include, without limitation, drilling, cavity / carries removal, tooth filling, tooth crowning, root-canals, tooth removal / extraction, implants, brushing, picking, and flossing. These and other dental procedures can result in bleeding and/or the production of saliva in the oral cavity of the dental patient, who can be a human or an animal.
  • cotton products are often employed. The cotton products are usually dry cotton products.
  • Cotton products are frequently used during dental work by dentists to dry a tooth, to absorb fluid (e.g., saliva, blood, water) in the patient's mouth, to prevent an oral surface from being contacted by water, saliva, blood or other fluid, or to shield a surface from coming into contact with, for example, a dental adhesive, a dental sealant, and /or a dental cement.
  • Cotton rolls are typically placed between the tongue and teeth and/or gum, and between the cheek and teeth and/or gum to allow a surface to remain isolated and dry.
  • dental patients are oftentimes asked to bite down on cotton rolls after a crown is installed to keep it in the proper position. These dental cotton rolls do not have any scents and/or flavours. Representative dry dental cotton rolls are shown in Fig. 1.
  • the dental procedures can be stressful, unpleasant, anxiety producing, fear engendering, and/or painful, it is desirable to find ways to make dental procedures more enjoyable. Decreasing the stress, unpleasantness, anxiety, fear and/or pain associated with a dental visit, a desirable goal in and of itself, can also facilitate better long term oral health by, for example, making patients more likely to visit a dentist on a regular basis, and, by making it more likely that a patient will undergo, when needed, dental procedure(s).
  • Flavour is the sensory impression of a substance, such as a cotton product, and is determined mainly by the chemical senses of taste and smell.
  • a flavourant gives a substance flavour; smell is a main determinant of a substance's flavour.
  • smell and flavour are intimately intertwined; and flavour of a substance easily altered by changing its smell (e.g., by changing its scent).
  • the taste of a substance is believed to be limited to the basic tastes of, for example, sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and savory, and combinations thereof, the number of smells that can be imparted to a substance is significantly greater.
  • a substance's flavour therefore, can be altered by changing its smell / scent.
  • the present inventors determined that one way to decrease the stress, unpleasantness, anxiety, fear and/or pain associated with a dental visit can be, for example, to impart a scent and/or flavour to a cotton or cotton product that can be used, for example, in a dental procedure, thus giving rise to the inventive embodiments described herein.
  • Figure 1 shows standard dry dental cotton rolls.
  • Figure 2 shows a right circular cylinder, a shape which the inventive cotton may adopt.
  • Figure 3 shows a beam, a shape which the inventive cotton may adopt.
  • Figure 4 shows a unscented / unflavoured cotton roll (top) and a scented / flavoured, sweetened and colored cotton roll (bottom).
  • the inventive cotton may be, for example, a dental cotton product that can be dry or can be wet (e.g., can contain a liquid absorbed therein).
  • the cotton employed in the inventive embodiments is preferably cotton that has been removed from a cotton boll (e.g., the rounded seed pod of the cotton plant), and further preferably cleaned, and further, preferably ginned (e.g., the cotton fibers are separated from, for example, the cotton seeds and/or stems).
  • the cotton employed in the inventive embodiments can be cotton where cotton fibers have been carded (e.g., aligned) and spun for form for example, threads.
  • the cotton threads can be woven into a fabric that can be employed in the inventive embodiments, or spun into a yarn that can be employed in the inventive embodiments.
  • the type of cotton is not limited and can be, for example, American, Brazilian, Peruvian, Egyptian, and/or Asiatic cotton.
  • the cotton can be, for example, a natural cotton and/or a genetically modified cotton.
  • the cotton can be, for example, a shiny cotton.
  • the cotton can be, for example, in the form of a fiber and/or a yarn.
  • the cotton fibers can range in width, for example, from 1 to 100 micrometers, preferably, 12-20 micrometers, including all values, ranges, and subranges therebetween.
  • the cotton fibers, without being limiting can range in length, for example, from 1 cm to 20 cm, preferably 1 cm to 6 cm, more preferably 2.2 cm to 3.3 cm in length, including all values, ranges, and subranges therebetween.
  • the luster of the cotton fibers can be for example, low, medium and/or high luster, and is preferably high luster.
  • the tenacity (strength) of the cotton fibers can be, without being limiting, when wet, for example, 1.0 - 10.0 g/d, preferably 3.0-5.0 g/d, including all values, ranges, and subranges therebetween.

Description

SCENTED AND/OR FLAVOURED COTTON AND PRODUCTS THEREFROM
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a scented and/or flavoured cotton, methods of making the cotton, and methods of using the cotton. The cotton may be used in the field of dentistry.
DISCUSSION OF THE BACKGROUND
Dental procedures can engender anxiety and /or fear in dental patients. Dental procedures include, without limitation, drilling, cavity / carries removal, tooth filling, tooth crowning, root-canals, tooth removal / extraction, implants, brushing, picking, and flossing. These and other dental procedures can result in bleeding and/or the production of saliva in the oral cavity of the dental patient, who can be a human or an animal. To control / contain the saliva and / or blood, cotton products are often employed. The cotton products are usually dry cotton products.
Cotton products, for example cotton rolls, are frequently used during dental work by dentists to dry a tooth, to absorb fluid (e.g., saliva, blood, water) in the patient's mouth, to prevent an oral surface from being contacted by water, saliva, blood or other fluid, or to shield a surface from coming into contact with, for example, a dental adhesive, a dental sealant, and /or a dental cement. Cotton rolls are typically placed between the tongue and teeth and/or gum, and between the cheek and teeth and/or gum to allow a surface to remain isolated and dry. In addition, dental patients are oftentimes asked to bite down on cotton rolls after a crown is installed to keep it in the proper position. These dental cotton rolls do not have any scents and/or flavours. Representative dry dental cotton rolls are shown in Fig. 1.
Because the dental procedures can be stressful, unpleasant, anxiety producing, fear engendering, and/or painful, it is desirable to find ways to make dental procedures more enjoyable.
Flavour is the sensory impression of a substance, such as a cotton product, and is determined mainly by the chemical senses of taste and smell. A flavourant gives a substance flavour; smell is a main determinant of a substance's flavour. Thus, smell and flavour are intimately intertwined; and flavour of a substance easily altered by changing its smell (e.g., by changing its scent). While the taste of a substance is believed to be limited to the basic tastes of, for example, sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and savory, and combinations thereof, the number of smells that can be imparted to a substance is significantly greater. A substance's flavour, therefore, can be altered by changing its smell / scent.
The present inventors determined that one way to decrease the stress, unpleasantness, anxiety, fear and/or pain associated with a dental visit can be, for example, to impart a scent and/or flavour to a cotton or cotton product that can be used, for example, in a dental procedure, thus giving rise to the inventive embodiments described herein. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows standard dry dental cotton rolls.
Figure 2 shows a right circular cylinder, a shape which the inventive cotton may adopt. Figure 3 shows a beam, a shape which the inventive cotton may adopt.
Figure 4 shows a unscented / unflavoured cotton roll (top) and a scented / flavoured, sweetened and colored cotton roll (bottom).
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The inventive cotton may be, for example, a dental cotton product that can be dry or can be wet (e.g., can contain a liquid absorbed therein).
The cotton employed in the inventive embodiments is preferably cotton that has been removed from a cotton boll (e.g., the rounded seed pod of the cotton plant), and further preferably cleaned, and further, preferably ginned (e.g., the cotton fibers are separated from, for example, the cotton seeds and/or stems). Scented and/or flavoured cotton or cotton products will give off scents even when they are dry. When a scented and/or flavoured cotton or cotton product gets wet in the patient's mouth, it will give off stronger flavour. The strength of the flavour can be controlled by the amount of the scent in the solution during the manufacturing process of the scented and/or flavoured cotton or cotton products. Surprisingly, it was found that when unscented cotton rolls are scented by dipping a scented solution or by spraying of the scented solution, the shape of the roll is sometimes changed, sometimes slightly. Without being bound by theory, it is believed that the shape change occurs because of a swelling of the roll when it gets wet. When cotton rolls are made of pre-scented cotton, the cylindrical shape of the roll can be well maintained, just like the conventional unscented cotton roll.
