Description

Connector or jointing clamp for coated overhead cables
The invention relates to a connector or jointing clamp for coated overhead cables, comprising two body sections, an upper body section and a lower body section, contact teeth in each of the body sections, a clamping screw for moving the body sections and the contact teeth thereof towards each other, and a moment transmission nut, provided with a fraction point and in engagement by its internal thread with an external thread of the clamping screw above the upper body section.
Such a connector or jointing clamp is known from the Applicant's patent publication FI-102120. A problem with this and other similar clamps arises from trouble in terms of installation. The outer surface of a clamp is slippery, especially in rain and winter, a secure grip of the clamp being difficult to obtain in view of placing the wires properly in the clamp.
An object of the invention is to provide a connector or jointing clamp of the foregoing type, wherein the above-mentioned handling-related problem has been alleviated.
This object is achieved in the invention on the basis of characterizing features presented in the appended claim 1. When the watertight attachment elastomer for contact teeth extends onto the external sides of the body sections, grip friction is increased and a better hold is obtained of the clamp. Separate elements need not be made for increasing grip friction as the attachment elastomer for contact teeth works in two functions
Preferred embodiments of the invention are presented in the dependent claims.
The invention will now be described more closely with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a connector or jointing clamp of the invention in a vertical section along a direction perpendicular to wires being joined;
Fig. 2 shows the same connector or jointing clamp in a vertical section along the direction of wires being joined, and
Fig. 3 shows the same connector or jointing clamp in a view from the end side along the direction of wires being joined. The proposed connector or jointing clamp comprises two body sections, namely an upper body section 1 and a lower body section 2. Each of the body sections is provided with contact teeth 3, bearing against a material of the body sections, which consists of hard plastics. The contact teeth pierce the coating or insulation of the cable. The contact teeth 3 are enclosed by soft plastics, especially elastomer 8, by which the contact teeth are attached to the body sections in a watertight manner. These soft plastic components 8, preferably of elastomer, extend onto the exterior sides of the body sections, thus increasing grip friction for easier handling. These soft plastic components 8 are designed even to start with, i.e. prior to the attachment of a connector or jointing clamp to a wire, to extend over onto the external side surfaces of the body sections 1, 2 for added grip friction. The elastomer 8 is of a color substantially different from that of the body sections 1 and 2 and also substantially different from black, for example blue or light grey. The color selections can also be used for various purposes of encoding connector or jointing clamp types. The elastomer 8 is provided with an adequate UV shield. The gripping assistance provided by elastomer and its non-compliant coloring make for easier installation.
The connector or jointing clamp includes a clamping screw 4 for moving the body sections 1, 2 and the contact teeth 3 thereof towards each other. A moment transmission nut 5, provided with a fraction point 6, is by its internal thread in engagement with an external thread of the clamping screw 4 above the upper body section 4. Upon reaching a clamping force sufficient for joining the wires, the nut 5 breaks up at the fraction point 6. The remaining bottom part of the nut 5 can be screwed off, if necessary, for releasing the connector or jointing clamp after first removing a protective collar 13 from around the bottom part of the nut 5. Between the nut 5 and the body section 1 can be provided an appropriate bracket, which allows for a tilting action of the upper body section 1 with respect to the clamping screw 4.
The lower body section 2 is provided with an internally threaded column 7, which is fixedly cast therein and in engagement with the external thread of the clamping screw 4. The extent of engagement extends over a substantial distance above the lower body section's 2 contact teeth 3. The extent of engagement, increased by means of this column 7, is greater than the diameter of the clamping screw 4, preferably greater than the diameter of a cable to be joined by means of the connector or jointing clamp, whereby the column 7 extends at least to flushness with the upper body section's 1 contact teeth 3 as the cables have been joined by means of the connector or jointing clamp. Preferably, in use, a top end of the column 7 extends into a guide of the upper body section 1 for a more stable structure. By virtue of the column 7, the clamping load is distributed in the lower body section 2 over a long helical distance, which enables the stress applied to the body to be distributed over a larger area across the entire body, nor will it be necessary to use excessive dimensions for the lower body 2 below the contact teeth 3. As a result of this, if desired, a head 11 of the clamping screw 4 can be totally omitted for cost saving, and/or a headless clamping screw can be fabricated from a higher quality and more expensive material, such as stainless steel. When providing below the lower body 2 a gripping formation 12 for an open- ended spanner, the helical engagement can be further lengthened. The threaded hole may terminate inside the gripping formation 12 to provide it with a solid bottom side. The upper body section's 1 elastomer 8 is designed with downward directed guides 9, which extend to a guiding contact with guides 10 directed upward from the lower body section's 2 elastomer 8. These guides 9 and 10 constrain elastically the relative tilting action of the body sections 1 and 2, such that, when placing a cable between one pair of contact teeth 3, the other pair of contact teeth 3 does not close its gap, thus facilitating the insertion of a second wire.
