- the latch member 20 is generally planar, and includes an engagement portion 22 that engages the striker member 16 in a latched position.
- the latch member 20 is operatively connected to a handle member, and actuation of the handle member causes the latch member 20 to pivot between the latched position and an unlatched position.
- the vehicle door latch mechanism 20 also includes a manual release mechanism 24 for disengaging the lock member so that the latch member 20 can be disengaged from the striker member 16 and the door 12 may be opened.
- the manual release mechanism 20 includes a release handle 26 that is mounted to the vehicle door 12 so as to be accessible by a vehicle occupant. As shown in FIG. 3, the release handle 26 is externally mounted to the vehicle door 12. For example, the release handle 26 may be mounted to an interior panel or an exterior panel of the door 12. For example, the release handle 26 may be disposed in a housing 28 provided in the vehicle door 12, such as at the door trim substrate 30.
- the release handle 26 is operatively coupled to the latch mechanism 14 via a connector 32, such as, a cable, or the like.
- the connector or cable 32 of this example is disposed within a cable guide 34 and having a first end 36 secured to the release handle 26 and a second end 38 connected to the latch member 25.
- the housing 28 may be comprised of two or more elements, including a first half 40 that may, as shown, defined integrally with the door trim pad substrate 30, and a second, complimentary half 42 secured thereto (such as by fasteners, or the like).
- the entire housing 28 may further be substantially concealed by a door trim pad 44 secured to the door trim pad substrate 30 and defining therethrough an access opening 46 for accessing release handle 26.
- an inset bezel 48 surrounds the opening 46 for supporting the release handle 26.
- Housing 28 defines therethrough a passageway 50 for the cable 32 and/or cable guide 52 so as to facilitate interconnection between the cable 32 and release handle 26 which interconnection may be accomplished according to any suitable technique.
- a larger-diameter retention member or cable end may be provided at the cable's end which is received into a correspondingly-shaped opening in the handle 26 and by means of which the cable end piece is captured or retained by the handle 26).
- the release handle 26 may have various shapes, and may be fabricated using various types of materials. In this example, the release handle 26 has a ring shape. Of course, it will be understood that the particular shape of the release handle 26 is not a limiting feature of the present invention, and may accordingly be varied per conventional design considerations.
- the guide 34 may be positioned with respect to the door 12 and secured thereto with a fastener, such as using a mounting bracket 52, or the like.
- the particular length and configuration of the guide 34 will depend upon such considerations as the distance between the manual release handle 26 and the latch member 20, as well as the physical environment of the door 12 through which the guide 34 is located to define a path between the manual release handle 26 and the mechanical latch 14.
