FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to packaging of small quantity of liquid contents and, in particular, to pouch packs containing small quantity of the liquid contents in a manner which would facilitate its ready and smooth release of contents from the pouch for user friendly application/use of the contents by the consumers/customers. Importantly, the pouch pack for such liquid contents is obtained such as on one hand to facilitate desired aesthetic and conventionally accepted forms of pouch packing and on the other hand ensuring that the construction of the pouch pack is adapted for the purpose of effective storing and importantly release of the contents even if contained in small quantity which would avoid any unwanted substantial loss of content in the pouch internal surface portion and/or while using the contents of the pouch. Advantageously, the pouch pack of the invention is provided to serve afore discussed necessity and need to make available products which in bulk quantity may be expensive for the ordinary customer such as perfumes and the like, but can be made cost effective and affordable to the ordinary man by making available such expensive products such as perfume in small content in the innovative pouch and thereby facilitating the much required purpose of reaching even usually expensive products to all for experiencing its use and benefits either as a necessity or as a luxury which due to inherent limitations of cost effective packaging could not be made available to the masses. Another aspect of the present invention would provide for a very user friendly packaging to store and sale small quantity of less than 0.5 ml preferably about 0.1 ml liquid products in packages in the form of pouches such as injectable formulations which are presently provided in ampoules avoiding the need for costly and cumbersome to handle glass ampoules and packs for such purpose thereby favouring a new dimension to the art of packing small quantity of liquids in pouches with possible ready release of contents as and when desired by the end user.
BACKGROUND ART
It is well known that conventionally various items of common use/ consumption such as tobacco, pan masala, gutka, shampoos, hair oil and even edible oils are made available in polymeric pouches/ sachets. Such pouches/ sachets containing such products are usually rectangular in shape and are filled in and the pouch sealed at its edges along the margin from all the four sides to thereby assume a pillow like shape and configuration. Over the years apart from the simple rectangular form of pillow type satches/pouches containing the product within, various other forms of pouches have been developed to suit containing variety of end products fro different purposes.
WO2009/001316 discloses a liquid delivery pouch and article comprising the same wherein the liquid delivery pouch comprises an outer liquid impermeable wall and a liquid contained therein. More particularly, the liquid impermeable wall is provided with atleast one aperture having a diameter of from 200μm to 500μm which is again sealed by a sealing means to prevent the liquid to be released from said pouch prior to use.
WO2004/093883 is directed to a sachet for a pharmaceutical composition comprising of selective combination of layers paper, bonding layer, barrier layer and sealing layer.
WO 2008/034168 is directed to sachet and relates particularly to a sachet for holding contents such as particulate contents such as herbs or spices. In particular the sachet is provided with a body that is sleeve like .In particular the body has one end closed and the other end also closed and includes a perforated membrane extending across the other end such that when the contents of the sachet are required to be dispensed therefrom, the sachet must be opened at the other end and the particulate contents permitted to pass through the perforations in the perforated membrane.
EP 2014756 Al is related to a laundry pouch made from water-soluble film and having at least two compartments containing a solid component and a liquid component, wherein the solid phase contains a peroxide source and the liquid phase contains bleach activator and related to a method of treating laundry by placing the pouch in the drum of the washing machine .
EP 1666579 Al is directed to a water soluble pouch which contains a liquid detergent composition, wherein the pouch is a water soluble film, the film material comprising polyvinyl alcohol, and wherein the liquid detergent composition also comprises a plasticizer, wherein the plasticizer is selected from the group consisting glycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol etc. and wherein the liquid detergent composition further comprises a viscosity modifier, preferably a hydrogenated castor oil to address the technical problem of pouch handling with wet hands (Para 0005 and Para 0006). Thus this prior art relates to a pouch containing detergent type products. For the purpose of opening the above conventional pouch/ sachets to release the contents, it is the usual practice to provide for tear portion marked for carrying out such opening of the pouch/ sachet. Once the pouch is thus cut, the consumer/ end user can either release the contents through the cut region by press releasing the pouch contents through the opening or extend the cut out further for comfortable and easy release of the contents from the pouch.
Various forms of pouch/sachet opening provisions are also disclosed to the art to suit different range of products and end uses thereof.
WO2005/102863 is directed to an improved sachet pouch wherein a metallized gasket is provided either on one or both sides of the sachet pouch with a scouring line in the form of a laser cut. This laser cut scoring line is provided upto the metallized layer to maintain the barrier property of the pouch. The ends of the sachet pouch with the additional gusset terminate in the flaps that facilitate the easy gripping of the sachet pouch fir the required tearing action to open the pouch.
WO 2006/003476 is directed to a food sachet or container which is formed of two plastic sheets and joined to one another around the edges of an internal pocket of the sachet by weld seals. Importantly, the compositions of the two plastic sheets are provided to differ from one another and are selected such that the strength of the seals are controlled by varying atleast one welding parameter selected from temperature, pressure and dwell time. This prior art thus achieves the required strong seals to effectively contain the contents within and also additionally have weak seals in the pouch which favour burst opening on application of pressure.
In case of edible liquid contents in pouch pack there has been developments in the art to make such pouches user friendly for easy and ready filling and also consumption by the consumers.
JP2007314245 (A) is directed to provide a pouch with a spout primarily used for liquid food or the like, having an opening stably held to facilitate filling work, capable of being easily filled with a diluted solution or drinking water for administering the diluted solution or the drinking water to a patient, when the diluted solution, drinking water or the like is filled in the pouch and is administered to the patient, etc. KR20040102856 (A) provides for packaging pack for containing a liquid, etc., which has a hollowed guide tube so as to allow a user to easily drink the contents and to guide the liquid from the pack body to the outside through the hollowed guide tube, and to prevent the liquid from being spilled on the ground, when drunk.
WO2007/002292 A2 teaches a fitment for a liquid containing pouch wherein the fitment is attached to the top portion of the pouch, wherein the fitment has a straw therein and a removable cap for sealing the liquid in the pouch. The cap can be removed to allow access to the straw and the liquid in the pouch. The straw being in the fitment makes it easier for the pouch to be used than other liquid containing pouches where the straw has to be inserted into the pouch by breaking a seal and eliminates the need to puncture a hole through the pouch to insert the straw.
US 5,884,758 discloses a plastic film liquid pouch is formed from impermeable film sheet material and has opposed side walls with sealed circumferential edges to form an enclosed chamber. A liquid product is provided in the chamber and a space is also provided to permit expansion of the liquid. An internal straw restraining passage is formed by seals between the opposed side walls. The straw restraining passage communicates with the liquid chamber and a straw is held loosely captive inside the passage and axially displaceable therein. The straw restraining passage defines a reduced cross-sectional area of the chamber whereby the opposed side walls of the bag at the restraining passage may be collapsed towards one another by the fingers of a user person thereby displacing a restricted quantity of liquid to expose the straw to grasp the straw and push an end of the straw through the film sheet material whereby to extract the liquid from the pouch either by sipping it through the straw or by compressing the pouch to force the liquid through the straw.
It is a fact that such diverse variety of provision of such pouch/ sachets have made it possible to reach products of various fields to variety of consumers/ end users and such pouches/ sachets are extremely popular through out the masses due to the affordability on one hand and also due to the easy and comfortable handling possible with such pouches which do not accompany the risk of breaking such as in case of glass or other fragile packing materials. One would appreciate that it is the availability of pouches/ sachets which can contain small amount of the contents make such pouches/ sachets readily and easily affordable to all section of the society. In particular, for instance in the case of shampoos and hair oils etc. although the ordinary customer may want to use it in a while considering that it would be expensive for many to purchase the standard bottle or poly pack containing greater volumes of contents the same affect several buyers of the same product who can not afford such one time bulk purchase of product of its liking due to higher price. Moreover, people who are traveling and/ or someone who is only in need of small contents of the product may not be interested at all to purchase the same product in bulk at a time. Thus, the availability of pouch pack/ sachets to make available small quantity of consumable products to the consumers/ end users over the years have served the dual need of the masses of affordability and purpose-based small quantity procurement/ purchase at a time to avoid unwanted loss or misuse of a product.
Thus, while such pouch pack/ sachets have already made substantial presence in the consumer market and in our daily lives, there is a continuing need for such pouches of varied shapes and sizes to suit different product forms and different consumer demands.
It is no doubt that the pouch pack/ sachet continues to thrive due to its superior mass consumer acceptability and affordability, it is however experienced that such pouch packs/ sachets which are presently available serve the basic purposes and needs very well provided off course the contents are of such volumes which can come out on its own or can be forced to readily come out of the sachet by pressing/ applying force on the pouch such as to release the contents through the cut out open end of the sachet.
There are, however, some product forms especially in liquid forms which do not find such conventional pouch/ sachets to be good enough to reach to the mass consumer/ end user. One such liquid product form is perfumes which inherently are considered by the masses as an expensive product which is not affordable for the common man. The cost implications involved in purchasing even a small bottled/ poly pack of perfume is something beyond the reach of the common man and hence it is usually categorized as a luxury item and not for the ready use of one and all. Moreover, even it is possible to make available even expensive perfumes in small contents to the end user, it is still a problem to reach to such consumer such small quantity of perfumes for effective end use since if it is packed in the small glass or like bottle it would still mean complexity of manufacture and packaging adding to the ultimate cost. Moreover, while soaps and hair oils can be marketed in pouches of 5 ml and above, the expensive perfumes required for single use if packaged in such pouches in such amounts may be again expensive and may be also too much for a single use and may be a wastage at the expense of costs of such quantity since once opened it cannot be stored for subsequent use. Alternatively, if the quantity of the expensive perfume packed for single use is much less that the usual capacity (5 ml) of pouches/ sachets, the same would end up with the small quantity of perfumes sticking more to the pouch/ sachet and not getting released on opening of the pouch/ sachet for application by the end user. Another very important aspect of packing small quantity of liquid product involves the provision of ampoules containing small amounts of medicinal/ injectable formulations. The ampoules as we all know does serve the much desired purpose of containing the injectable formulation/ medicinal formulation of small quantity however the ampoules are found to be highly fragile and difficult to safely carry and use.
The above therefore clearly reveals the problem in making available liquid products such as perfumes, medicinal formulations in small dosages in packages which would serve the purpose of storing well the product in good form, would be free of problems of difficulty in handling and use and importantly be user friendly in terms of ready and cooperative release of the contents from the package without problems of loss of the small quantity of the content in the package itself and or complexities in its release from the package.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is thus the basic object of the present invention to provide for a pouch/ sachet type packaging for small quantity of liquid product such as perfumes, medicinal formulations in liquid form which would on one hand favour making available small and regulated quantity of such products at affordable prices to the masses and on the other hand the end user/ consumer would not have difficulty of releasing the said small contents from such pouch/ sachet and thereby avoid the problems in making available such small quantity of products in readily releasable product forms in pouch/ sachet.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the first time a pouch/ sachet packaging for containing liquid products such as perfumes in very small quantity say about 0.5 ml preferably about for masses which would meet the hidden desire among the people of low income group to use perfumes which was not possible till date due to its packaging constraints and inherent limitations / characteristics of such products which have thus kept such products away from the reach of the poor and low income group. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
The details of the invention, its objects and advantages are explained hereunder in greater detail in relation to non-limiting exemplary illustration as per the following accompanying figures wherein: BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING FIGURES:
Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a conventional pouch/ sachet presently available;
Figure 2 is schematic illustration of an embodiment of the pouch/ sachet in accordance with the present invention involving the capillary provision for containing the liquid contents; and
Figure 3 is schematic illustration of another embodiment of the pouch/ sachet in accordance with the present invention involving capillary provision for containing the liquid contents.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMAPNYING FIGURES:
Reference is now invited to accompanying Figure 1 which illustrates an embodiment of a conventional pouch/ sachet of liquid contents such as shampoos/ oils etc. presently available in the market.
As apparent from said Figure 1, the said pouch/ sachet basically involves a rectangular package wherein the liquid contents are filled in the region marked (FR) while the edge portions are sealed and marked as sealed portion (SP) are sealed. Such a conventional pouch/sachet usually thus assumes the shape of a pillow with the contents in the middle slightly bulging and the boundary region along the margin sealed. Importantly, as and when the user is required to open such pouch usually one of the corner region is cut whereby at least a portion of the filled region is opened up for desired release of the contents. It is important to note that in such pouches since the contents are spread along the entire filled region and are of sufficient volume considering the filling portion of the pouch, it is possible for the consumer to press the pouch pack and release the contents through the opened end.
However, as already discussed hereinbefore in case of such convention pouch the content being substantial in terms of the available volumes, it is possible that the user can get effective release of such contents from the pouch. However, in case the content is much less as compared to the available filling space in the pouch and/ or is of such a nature that it is sticking on the inside of the pouch it is difficult if not impossible to effectively release small quantity of the valuable product out of such conventional pouches to meet consumer's satisfaction and purpose. As already discussed in case of contents such as perfumes the same can be made available and affordable to the masses under proper quality control and affordability options only if very small but active content can be released from the pouch package for desired end use/ application by the consumer. Thus, if the quantity is far less for the sake of affordability in situation such as perfumes, filling such small quantity in the conventional pouches as that of Figure 1 would end up with the end consumer/ user unable to release possibly even a drop of the active perfume since the most of the content in the pack would be either sticking to the package inside or would be extremely difficult to be taken out of the available volume inside the package. There is thus clear limitation to accommodate or fill such contents in small amounts such as liquid perfumes in small packages such as pouch/ sachet presently available in the art.
Reference is now invited to accompanying Figure 2 which illustrate an embodiment of the pouch/ sachet pack in accordance with the present invention which is directed to avoid the limitations of packing small active contents even to the extent of as little as 0.5 ml and preferably about 0.1 ml in pouch packs as further discussed hereunder.
Importantly, as is apparent from the illustration in Figure 2, the pouch/ sachet of the invention unlike the conventional pouch pack of Figure 1, is having a very limited portion for the liquid content i.e., the filled region (FR) which is specifically obtained in the form of a fine diameter capillary while the sealed portion (SP) occupies the substantial part of the package. Importantly, thus the filled region (FR) according to this embodiment is provided to achieve a capillary action whereby although the content is much less, the same is adapted to release smoothly and effectively upon puncturing of the puncture area (PA) by a simple pin or any other puncturing device. Such puncturing in effect forces the content to release under capillary action and meet the demands of the consumer in having the value and affordability of the product in hand at the time of use without wasting the content sticking to the package. Moreover, apart from the capillary flow out the substantially straight strip type filling region (FR) further facilitate release of any contents from the said region through the puncture outlet.
Considering that the filled region (FR) is obtained in the form of a straight capillary provision the release of the contents therefrom is very fast and easy as if the liquid inspite of being very small in quantity is propelled out of the capillary based filled region (FR) as soon as the capillary filled region is punctured for release of the contents by the end user. Also, the straight filling along the straight capillary provision facilitates the release of the contents from the puncture region which is also in alignment with the filled region. Reference is now invited to accompanying figure 3 which illustrates another embodiment of the pouch /sachet of the present invention involving the capillary based filling region. As shown in said figure 3 according to this embodiment there is provided multiple capillary provisions each of which are spaced apart by a sealed region such that the capillary provision is created by the intermediate sealed portions (SP).
An illustrative and non-limiting manner of manufacture of the pouch of the invention is detailed hereunder under the following Example:
EXAMPLE: Stage 1.
1st stage of the pouch making is the common method of three layer laminate combination which is discussed in detail below :-
1st layer: 12 micron polyester film is reverse printed in a multi colour graveure printing machine.
2nd layer: 12 micron metalized polyester film is laminated with the first layer printed film.
3rd layer: 40 micron poly propylene film is laminated with the already laminated top layer film, this layer would allow the formation of pouch due to its sealing property.
Now a three layer laminate is ready to form the pouches which are common in the pouch making field. Till this stage the process is common.
Stage 2.
Now the pouch making area comes where we are applying our new and simple technique to form a pouch which will have a capillary tube in itself.
The pouch is being sealed from all the side only a particular area which is in size of a capillary is left where we are filling the material. This provides for a pouch which will have this unique sealing style that it will by itself forms a capillary due to its uniqueness in size and design. Apart from single capillary provision in the pouch of the invention, it is also possible to provide multiple doses of the small liquid content in the plurality of spaced apart capillary provisions in the pouch as per the invention. In case of perfumes, it is possible to provide either the same perfume in multiple units or different perfumes for variety of application and use by the end users in a single package/ pouch.
In case of the pouch performing as a medicinal carrier it is possible to provide apart from single dosages of the medicinal formulation, multiple dosages of the same and/ or different formulations of treatment specific dosage forms in the package. Necessary multi dosages with directions for use as a kit can also be provided as an added option for user specific adaptability of the pouch pack of the invention.
For the purposes of serving containing small liquid dosages of medicines and drugs, it is possible that injections instead of the usual glass based ampoules can be provided in pouches according to the invention having capillary provision whereby the portion of the puncturing region of the capillary provision can be used to insert the injection and take out the active liquid drug/ medicine for the purposes of administration and/ or any other purposes.
Also, while, the capillary provisions have been illustrated in the accompanying figures to be vertically disposed with respect to the pouch, it is possible to provide such capillary provision in any disposition so long as the capillary purpose to release the small contents is served in accordance with the present invention. Thus it is possible to have horizontally and /or angularly disposed straight capillary provisions in the pouch according to the present invention.
It is thus possible by way of the present invention for the first time to package small quantity of liquid contents in pouch packs containing even very small quantity of the liquid contents of even less than 0.5 ml and preferably about 0.1 ml in a manner which would facilitate its ready and smooth release of contents from the pouch for variety of user friendly application/ use of the contents by the consumers/ customers.
