Abstract

Movable Water Turbine rotate by sea waves or flowing water on horizontal axis to generate power. As illustrated in Fig. No. 1 the water turbine partially clipped in water rotating in one direction generate power. The turbine having flywheel is connected to power generating device through gearbox. The water turbine can move up & down by support structure and also to & fro by a traveling device which moves on beam supported on columns. The movement of water turbine is required due to change in water level of sea/flowing water. Instead of power generating device pump or compressor can be used to generate high pressure fluid which in turn can generate electrical/thermal/mechanical energy.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sun is the biggest source of energy in our solar system and the earth continuously receives energy from the Sun. The sea covering about 3/4th of the earth's surface and also the wind above sea receive maximum energy form the Sun. The sea and wind are huge reservoir of enormous energy and form the sea waves continuously. The rotating water particles transfer this energy to other water particles which ultimately strike the sea shore in the form of waves continuously on regular basis all the time in all the seasons. The energy of these waves along with the energy of water layer flowing towards shore can be converted to useful energy.
The energy of sea is distributed and sea waves are striking all along the shore. Therefore large amount of power can be extracted by multiple modular systems along the coastal line according to this invention.
PREAMBLE
Presently the main sources of power generation like coal, natural gas, petroleum and nuclear materials etc. are depleting fast whereas hydroelectric power depends on monsoon. Small amount of power is generated from solar energy, tidal harnesses, wind generators, and geothermal systems etc. Most of the energy of sea is in the form of waves and so far the same could not be commercially exploited though several technologies are available. The present invention presents workable system of power generation from sea waves which can be commercially utilized on large scale.
SUMMARY QF THE INVENTION
The fascinating and ever moving sea waves full of energy have called attention of innovative persons to generate power from sea. However aggressive, variable and unpredictable behavior of sea resulted in little success so far.
This invention has provisions to handle such exigencies.
Movable water turbines generate power from sea waves and also from flowing water having energy. The sea waves and flowing water strike only the lower portion of the water turbines resulting in rotation of water turbines in one direction. Flywheels are provided to regulate the rpm of turbines. The variable rpm of turbine is converted into uniform and higher rpm by gearbox (es) suitable for power generation by an alternator.
The whole system is supported by traveling device (like E.O.T. crane) for up & down and to & fro movement of water turbine. The traveling device moves on beams which are supported on columns. The movement of water turbine is required from time to time as per variation in sea water level for maximum power generation at any time.
PRIORART: THETECHNOLOGYANDPATENTSURVEY
The fascinating ever flowing sea waves full of energy have attracted the mankind to generate power from sea. Several systems have been planned and hundreds of patents are available.
Some of the relevant technologies and patents are briefly described below:
1. Oscillating Water Column
The oscillating water column consists of a partially submerged concrete or steel structure that has an opening to the sea below the waterline. It encloses a column of air above a column of water. As waves enter the air column, they cause the water column to rise and fall. This alternately compresses and depressurizes the air column. As the wave retreats, the air is drawn back through the turbine as a result of the reduced air pressure on the ocean side of the turbine.
2. PowerBuoy technology
This consists of modular, ocean-going buoys. The rising and falling of the waves moves the buoy-like structure creating mechanical energy which is converted into electricity. 3. Pelamis Wave Energy Converter
The sections of the device articulate with the movement of the waves, each resisting motion between it and the next section, creating pressurized oil to drive a hydraulic ram which drives a hydraulic motor. The machine is long and narrow (snake-like) and points into the waves; it attenuates the waves, gathering more energy than its narrow profile suggests.
4. The AquaBuOY
Energy transfer takes place by converting the vertical component of wave kinetic energy into pressurized seawater by means of two- stroke hose pumps. Pressurized seawater is directed into a conversion system consisting of a turbine driving an electrical generator.
5. CETO
Consists of a single piston pump attached to the sea floor, with a float tethered to the piston. Waves cause the float to rise and fall, generating pressurized water.
6. Piston moving up-down in Cylinder
A near shore floating device facing incoming waves. Similar to the oscillating wave column except that there is no turbine. The rise and fall of the waves is converted to mechanical motion by heavy buoyant piston driving an overhead crankshaft. This in turn drives a gearbox and alternator. 7. Neo-Aero Dynamic
An airfoil base design to harness kinetic power of the fluid flow via an artificial current around its center with vertical shaft. The device differentiates from others by its capability to directly transfer wave power into rotational torque to drive a generator without a single moving part. As of a wave device, it harnesses the energy via the circular force of the wave surface current.
8. GyroWaveGen TM
This uses a gyroscopic flywheel to provide the stationary position against which the oscillations of the wave motion can then be converted to usable energy.
9. Cantilever Floats on Seashore
Israel uses shoreline wave action combined with cantilever connected to hydraulics to run a generator.
Some of the patents and their comparison with this invention are given below:
1. Floating platform to obtain electric power from sea waves United States Patent 6695536
A floating platform is fixed to the sea bottom provided with a lathe in that a cable is rolled up by a recoverable spring, they allow to transform the kinetic energy of the waves in electricity by connecting the axis of the lathe to an electricity generators. The present invention is entirely different.
2. Sea Wave Power Generator United States Patent 3644052
A power generator, utilizing sea waves as a motivating mechanism, having a rotatable paddle wheel arranged to rotate a propeller shaft, includes a gathering platform to guide incoming wave propelled sea water in an overshot flow onto the paddle wheel and discharging the same into a catch basin which releases impounded sea water, on the wave recession, in an undershot paddle wheel flow to utilize both the incoming and outgoing sea waves as a source of power for the generator. The present invention is entirety different.
3. Floating platform harvesting sea wave energy for electric power generation
United States Patent 6747363
A floating platform located on the sea surface can transform the waves movements in circular movements by mean of a turbine or helix horizontally arranged, providing a fixed anchorage to the sea bottom and a device to maintain the platform at the sea level of the valley of the waves. A containment tube surrounding said helix or turbine which is located at the lower end of said tube. When a wave raises the sea water floods the containment tube causing the helix or turbine to rotate. The present invention is entirely different.
4. Wave generator power plant United States Patent 7327049
The Wave Generator Power Plant is related to offshore semi- submersible platforms used in the petroleum industry. The floating semi-submersible platforms are anchored to the sea floor with cables. The Wave Generator Power Plant uses an anchored ring- pontoon, that is fully submerged and its buoyancy supports the above-water structure. Within the anchored ring-pontoon the moving buoyant cone-shaped pontoon reciprocates similarly to a ship at sea that is lifted and dropped with the action of the sea waves. The reciprocation is converted into rotary motion by a connecting rod and crankshaft. The present invention is entirely different. 5. Sea wave electric power generator (WO/2005/008061)
The invention relates to a sea wave electric power generator. The inventive generator comprises one or more bell housings which are open at the lower part and upper part thereof. According to the invention, as the waves rise, they move the air from the lower part upwards and, as the waves fall, they absorb the air from the exterior towards the bell housings. The upper part communicates with one or more chambers housing air turbines which rotate in one direction independently of the air flow direction. The aforementioned turbines drive electric generators. Moreover, the bell housings can float on the surface of the water or be fixed to the sea floor. The present invention is entirely different.
6. Turbine Plant For Generating Power From Sea Waves International Application No PCT/EP2007/010338
The invention relates to a turbine plant for generating power from sea waves. Said turbine plant comprises a chamber that has one respective opening at the lower and upper end thereof, and a pipe which is open at both ends for conducting an air flow. The lower end of the chamber is immersed in sea water while the opening of the upper end is connected to one of the ends of the pipe. The turbine plant further comprises a power unit which is enclosed by the pipe and is disposed coaxial thereto. A device is provided for cleaning the rotor blades of sediments or preventing sedimentation on the rotor blades. The present invention is entirely different. 7. Wave power device
USPTO Application #: 20070193265
Wave-power device, with a plurality of floating bodies arranged in at least two parallel rows for vertical movement caused by wave movements. Each floating body is connected to a generator for the generating of electrical energy during the vertical movement. The floating bodies are jointed to a raft which can be relocated on the water and can be moored at an arbitrary place of use. The present invention is entirely different.
8. Sea-Wave Power Plant WO/1999/013218
The present invention relates to a sea-wave power plant comprising at least one channel, bore or similar passage defined by a hollow column or other hollow body extending upwardly from a lower, submerged, open end, and wherein waive movements in water are utilized for lifting and lowering a float piston disposed within said hollow column, and wherein to the float piston or to each float piston, respectively, is connected a transmission member for forwarding and utilizing the upward and downward, linear displacement movement, possibly for converting this movement to a rotational movement in one and the same direction. The present invention is entirely different. 9. Submersible tethered platform for undersea electrical power generation
United States Patent 7470086
A submersible and remotely-operable platform system for carrying out repeated operations in a submarine position, and producing electrical energy as either a primary or secondary purpose by means of one or more energy-conversion payload devices installed thereon. The platform and payload devices may be periodically brought to the surface and thence, if necessary, to a shore-based facility for maintenance or refit. In deployment, the platform is preferably engaged to its mooring lines and electrical cables while still on the surface. The present invention is entirely different.
10. Tidal/Wave Compressed Air Electricity Generation Patent number: 6574957
A system for using tidal or wave action to compress air at a high pressure and produce electricity. The system includes a piston contained in a chamber including an air intake port. The chamber is connected to an air storage tank through a valve, A moveabie power transfer shaft contained in a sleeve guide has a float disposed on ocean waves providing motion to the shaft. The present invention is entirely different.
11. Installation of Power Generation by Wave Patent number: 6711897
An installation to apply ocean energy to power generation. The installation includes a floater, lever, chain, ratchet wheel, flywheel, generator, cable, etc. The floater and weight fixed to the floater move up and down with the motion of wave and drive the strength enlargement mechanism made up of a number of levers to travel alternately and pull the heavy flywheel to rotate constantly. The rotation of the flywheel enables the generator to run and yield electricity. The present invention is entirely different.
12. Floating Turbine System For Generating Power United States Patent No. 5946909
A series of floating turbine rotors each have a tubular hub with outwardly projecting blades and the rotors are connected in general axial alignment by a flexible driven shaft. The shaft includes tubular floating connector shafts and flexible Couplings and each rotor is connected to drive the shaft through a one way ratchet clutch. One or more lines of the connected floating rotors are anchored within moving water of a river or in the waves flowing into a sea shore and the rotors drive each flexible shaft which, in turn, drives an electric generator through a fly-wheel and a power converter or drives an air compressor for producing compressed air which is stored in underground tanks and later used to drive an electric generator through an air turbine. The present invention is entirely different. 13. Wave energy device
PATENT-WIPO NO: WO2007/125538
It is a floating device tethered with chains to piles driven to ocean bottom. The wave action raises the heavy partially buoyant piston that drives the overhead crankshaft by half turn. The receding wave drops the piston completing the balance half turn. One revolution is obtained for every wave. Using gear box and generator the current is produced continuously. The present invention is entirely different.
There is no prior art closer the present invention.

DESCRIPTION
The description of preferred system/embodiment is given below:
Please refer to Fig. No. 1 and 2.
1. One or more water turbines (item no. 1) rotate with horizontal shaft (item no. 2) as shown in Fig. No. 1 by the sea waves or flowing water. The water turbine has one or more blades which are either straight or curved.
2. The shaft (item no 2) has one or more bearing/bush block (item no. 3) for the smooth rotation of the shaft with water turbine. These block(s) (item no. 3) are supported by support structure (item no.4).
3. The support structure (item no. 4) can move up & down along with water turbine and other parts by a hydraulic / pneumatic / electrical / mechanical device (item no. 5) with braking system.
4. The support structure (item no. 4) is supported by a traveling device (item no. 6) (like E.O.T. crane) and can travel to & fro (towards shore and away from shore) by a hydraulic / pneumatic / electrical / mechanical device (item no. 7) with braking system.
5. The traveling device (item no. 6) moves on parallel beams (item no. 8) which are either horizontal or inclined and start from dry land near the shore. The beams are supported on columns (item no. 9). 6. The water turbine (item no. 1) also has one or more flywheel (item no. 12) to regulate the variation in rotation by regularly striking sea waves. The water turbine's shaft (item no. 2) is connected through coupling (item no. 14) to one or more gearbox (item no. 15).
7. The gearbox (item no. 15) converts the varying rpm of water turbine to uniform and desired rpm for power generation and its output shaft is connected to art alternator or power generating device (item no. 16).
8. Alternatively in place of alternator, pump or compressor may be used to generate high pressure fluid which can be used for the generation of electrical / mechanical / thermal energy.
9. The gearbox (item no. 15) and alternator (item no. 16) are also supported by the support structure (item no. 4) and the traveling device (item no. 6).
10. Normally the water returning from sea shore will pass below the water turbine without disturbing its operation, to further ensure this, barrier plates (item no. 10) are provided on sea shore side of the water turbine. The barrier plates (item no. 10) divert the water without creating undue obstruction in the working of water turbines.
11. The barrier plates (item no. 10) are also supported by tie-rods (item no. 11) from the support structure (item no. 4). The details are shown in Fig. No. 3.
12. The similar system can be used for power generation from flowing water from canals, rivers, fails, springs or water channels having requisite energy. 13. The system described above is one module for power generation supported on one or more beams, several modules can be installed side by side to generate more and more power. The beams can support one module on each side.
14. Fig. No. 4 is bird's eye view showing several modules for more power generation.
15. The system described above offers lot of flexibility in design and installation as per local conditions of sea or flowing water.
16. The water turbine of each module can be lifted above water to stop power generation and also can be brought back to sea shore on dry land for maintenance and checking while other modules continue generating power.
17.In case of extreme weather conditions or storms or cyclones etc. all the modules can be lifted and brought back to dry land for safety.
18. The power generated by the system is renewable and clean energy with no emission of green house gases or ozone depletion.

Claims

CLAIMSWe claim as under:
1. A system to generate power by movable water turbine which is partially dipped in water to rotate in one direction by sea waves or sea water or flowing water consisting of followings:
- shaft with bearing block
- flywheel
- coupling
- gearbox
- power generating device
- support structure for up & down movement
- traveling device for to & fro movement
- beams and columns
- barrier plates
2. As claimed in claim no.1 one or more water turbines having one or more straight or curved blades made of steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic / reinforced plastic consisting of solid or hollow shaft with one or more bearing / bush block in either single piece or more than one piece joint together made of steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic / reinforced plastic is partially dipped in sea water or flowing water so that sea waves or sea water or flowing water strike only the lower portion of water turbine below the shaft to rotate the water turbine in one direction only.
3. The water turbine as claimed in claim no.1 also consist one or more flywheel made of steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic/reinforced plastic to regularize the rotation by intermittent sea waves or flowing water.
4. The shaft of water turbine as claimed in claim no.1 is connected to one or more gearbox through a coupling to regulate and change the rpm of output shaft of gearbox to suitable and uniform to generate power by alternator or power generating device or generation of high pressure fluid by pump or compressor which is connected to gearbox.
5. As claimed in claim no. 1 the level of water turbine is maintained by raising or lowering the support structure made of steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic/reinforced plastic by its up & down movement operated by hydraulic or pneumatic or electrical/electronic or mechanical device so that the sea waves or sea water or flowing water strikes the water turbine below the shaft.
6. As claimed in claim no. 1 the traveling device made of steel/metal/alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic/reinforced plastic moves on one or more beams for to & fro movement of the water turbine along with other components and support structure due to change in water level of sea water or of flowing water which is operated by hydraulic or pneumatic or electrical/electronic or mechanical device.
7. The beam(s) as claimed in claim no.1 are either horizontal or inclined and constructed from dry land is made of RCC or steel/metal/alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic/reinforced plastic, capable to move and support one system on each side and start from dry land near shore.
8. The columns as claimed in claim no.1 provide support to beam(s) and are made of RCC or steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic/reinforced plastic and start from dry land near shore.
9. As claimed in claim no. 1 , the barrier plates made of RCC or steel / metal / alloy with or without corrosion resistant coating or plastic / reinforced plastic are provided on sea shore side of the water turbine to avoid the disturbance in its operation by the reverse flowing water from shore and supported by the tie rods/structure from the support structure.
10.In the system as claimed in claim no. 1 in place of power generating device pump or compressor can be used to generate pressurized hydraulic oil or water or air or fluid which in turn can be used to generate electrical or mechanical or thermal energy.
11. The power is generated by the system as claimed in claim no. 1 when the sea waves are either perpendicular or inclined to sea shore.
12. The system as claimed in claim no. 1 is also suitable, to generate power from flowing water from canals, rivers, falls, springs or water channels having energy in addition to sea waves.
13. The system as claimed in claim no. 1 is one module and several modules can be installed side by side using common beams to generate more power, the multiple module system also offers the flexibility of maintaining or checking one module by bringing the module on dry land on shore while other modules will continue generating power, moreover in case of extreme weather conditions like storms / cyclones / tornado etc. all the system modules can be raised above water level and brought back on dry land on shore for safety only beams and columns remain exposed to sea or water.
14. The system as claimed in claim no. 1 also offers lot of flexibility in design, fabrication/construction and operation as per local conditions with possibility of manual or automatic or computerized system of operation in addition to providing various monitoring items and safety features.
15.A system substantially as herein above described in the specifications with reference to the accompanying drawings.
