Description

Method and apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the
Internet
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the Internet.
A method for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the Internet is known. It uses a computer program, residing on end-user's side, collecting the data regarding the features of digital multimedia content, in order to send it over the Internet to an Internet server, comparing data received with data stored in a central database, thereby collecting information about the sent multimedia file. Marking digital multimedia content consist in designating data containing digital multimedia content features and storing it in the central database.
The known apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content comprises an internet server containing central database linked, through the Internet, to end-user's terminals, then sending to the internet server information about digital multimedia content using the software installed on end-user's computer.
Audible Magic Corporation from USA offers a service for marking and identifying digital multimedia content, that allows decoding digital multimedia content using dedicated software, namely SDK Software Development Kit, which is installed on end-user's computer and an internet server using a central database. Assigning data with digital multimedia content features takes place on end-user's side with the use of special dedicated software installed for that purpose, that sends assigned data over the Internet to the central database of the internet server, where this data is being compared with that already stored in the database. A disadvantage of this method is due to the necessity of installing additional software by end- user, on end-user's computer, and running a large central database of digital multimedia content features.
It is an object of the invention to provide a method and an apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the Internet. In accordance with the essence of the method according to the present invention, in order to mark digital multimedia content, an end-user uses an Internet form to fill out and send over the Internet both data in the form of metadata describing the digital multimedia content and digital multimedia content to the internet server.
Internet server marks received digital multimedia content by adding an additional watermark signal. Watermark signal is perceptual transparent, so it's inaudible and invisible in the presence of the digital multimedia content. Watermark signal represents an index, which, linked with database on the internet server, constitutes a reference to the information stored as metadata by end-user on the internet server. Metadata concerns marked digital multimedia content and, in particular, contains time stamp - date and time when digital multimedia content was marked.
End-user chooses a method of marking and identifying digital multimedia content with the aid of an Internet form by selecting symbol on the form of the chosen encoder and decoder of the watermark.
The identification of digital multimedia content consists in sending digital multimedia content by end-user by means of the Internet form onto the internet server. As a result of the operation of the watermark signal decoder, that is installed on the internet server, an index is being achieved, which, linked with the database of the internet server, constitutes a reference to the information stored as metadata by end-user on this internet server. Information regarding achieved metadata of the given digital multimedia content is displayed on the internet form on end-user's side.
In accordance with the gist of the apparatus according to present invention, modules of an encoder (K) and a decoder (D) are installed on a server, that are linked, via interface, with a database (DB) of an internet server, the server is being coupled with a Real Time Clock (TC) block, wherein the first input of the encoder module is connected with an input signal (Kin) buffer and the second input of the encoder is connected with a metadata (Kmet) buffer, the first output of the encoder (K) is being passed to an output signal (Kout) buffer, the second output of an encoder (Kdbmet) is being passed to the first input of the internet server database (DB), the third output of the encoder is being passed to the Real Time Clock (TC) block input and the output of the TC block is being passed to the second input of the internet server database (DB), wherein the first output of the internet server database generates data stream identifying the index of the digital multimedia content (Kdbind) onto the third input of the encoder (K), the second output of the encoder (Kdbmet) is being passed to the first input of the internet server database (DB), the second output of the internet server database delivers a stream of metadata (Ddbmet) to the first input on the decoder (D), while the first output of the decoder (Ddbind) delivers information about the decoded watermark index to the third input of the internet server database (DB) and the second input of the decoder (D) constituting a buffer of the decoded signal (Din) and the second output of the decoder (D) constituting a buffer of the output signal (Pout).
According to the method, end-user fills out an Internet form and sends over the Internet both, data in the form of metadata describing the digital multimedia content and the digital multimedia content, to an internet server. The internet server marks the received digital multimedia content by adding an additional watermark signal. The watermark signal is perceptual transparent, so it is invisible and inaudible in the presence of the digital multimedia content. The watermark signal represents an index, which linked to the database of the internet server, constitutes a reference to the information stored as metadata on the internet server by end-user. The metadata covers the marked digital multimedia content and, in particular, contains time stamp - date and time when the digital multimedia content was marked.
End-user chooses a method of marking and identifying the digital multimedia content, with the aid of an Internet form, by selecting on the said form a symbol of the chosen encoder and decoder for the watermark. The identification of the digital multimedia content consists of sending the digital multimedia content by end-user, by means of the Internet form, onto the internet server. As a result of the use of the watermark signal decoder installed on the internet server, an index, is being obtained, which linked with the database of the internet server, constitutes a reference to the information stored as metadata by end-user on the internet server. Information regarding achieved metadata of the given digital multimedia content is displayed on the internet form on end-user's side.
The accompanying drawing, which is incorporated herein and constitutes part of the specification, illustrates embodiment of the invention and, together with the general description given above and the detailed description given below serves to explain the principles of the invention. On the drawing:
Fig 1 represents the apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the internet.
The apparatus for marking and identifying digital multimedia content over the internet, represented in Fig. 1 , comprises of a server, with installed modules of an encoder (K) and a decoder (D), which are linked, via the interfaces, with the database (DB) on the internet server, the said server being coupled with a Real Time Clock (TC) block, whereas in the encoder module first input is being connected with an input signal (Kin) buffer, the second input of the encoder is being connected with a metadata (Kmet) buffer, the first output of the encoder (K) is being passed to an output signal (Kout) buffer, the second output of the encoder (Kdbmet) is being passed to the first input of the internet server database (C)B), the third output of the encoder is being passed to the Real Time Clock (TC) block input while the output of the TC block is being passed to the second input of the internet server database (DB), where the first output of the internet server database generates a data stream identifying the index of the digital multimedia content (Kdbind) onto third input of the encoder (K) while the second output of the encoder (Kdbmet) is being passed to the first input of the internet server database (DB), the second output of the internet server database delivers a stream of metadata (Ddbmet) to the first input on decoder (D), while the first output of the decoder (Ddbind) delivers information about the decoded watermark index to the third input of the internet server database (DB) and the second input of the decoder (D) constitutes a buffer of the decoded signal (Din) while the second output of the decoder (D) constitutes a buffer of the output signal (Pout).
