Abstract

An exemplary embodiment of the present invention provides a hinge apparatus for a portable terminal, which rotates a cover by an opening reference angle and 360 degrees in the upward and downward directions with respect to the main body of the portable terminal. For this purpose, the hinge apparatus for the portable terminal comprises: i) a hinge case connected to a first hinge arm arranged at the top of the cover and to a second hinge arm arranged at the top of the main body of the portable terminal; ii) a first hinge shaft and a second hinge shaft which are rotatably arranged in the hinge case with a predetermined spacing, and the ends of which are assembled to the first hinge arm and to the second hinge arm, respectively; iii) a first driving gear and a second driving gear which are fixed on the first hinge shaft and the second hinge shaft, respectively, and which have respective rotating cams integrally formed therewith; iv) a first slave gear rotatably arranged in the hinge case and engaged with the first driving gear; v) a second slave gear rotatably arranged in the hinge case and engaged with the first slave gear and the second driving gear; vi) movable cams arranged at the first and second hinge shafts to be linearly movable in the lengthwise direction of the first and second hinge shafts, and which contact each of the rotating cams; and vii) a first elastic member and a second elastic member mounted on the first and second hinge shafts, respectively, to provide elastic force to the movable cams. The rotating cams have a first male thread portion and a second male thread portion, respectively, with different sizes and heights, wherein said first and second male thread portions correspond with each other on a concentric circle. The movable cams have a first cam portion and a second cam portion integrally formed therewith, respectively, to correspond to the respective rotating cams, and the cam portions have first and second female thread portions, respectively, to engage with the first and second male thread portions.
