Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment
[00015] The present disclosure generally relates to a dispenser for a carton. The present disclosure can be used, for example, in cartons that contain articles or other products such as, for example, food and beverages. The articles can also include wrapped food products (e.g., candy bars), or beverage containers such as, for example, cans, bottles, PET containers, or other containers such as those used in packaging foodstuffs. For the purposes of illustration and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the disclosure, the following detailed description describes generally rectangular food products as disposed within the carton embodiments. In this specification, the terms "lower," "bottom," "upper" and "top" indicate orientations determined in relation to fully erected cartons.
[00016] Fig. 1 is a plan view of the exterior side 2 of a blank, generally indicated at 1, used to form a carton 3 (Fig. 2) according to the illustrated embodiment of the disclosure. The carton 3 can be used to house a plurality of articles such as food products (e.g., wrapped candy bars) B (Fig. 2). The carton 3 has a dispenser 5, formed from various dispenser features in the blank 1, for allowing access to the food products B. In the illustrated embodiment, the food products B are arranged in two layers of four food products in each layer, but it is understood that the carton 3 may be sized and shaped to hold food products of a different or same quantity in less than or more than two layers, and/or different sized food products.
[00017] The blank 1 has a longitudinal axis Ll and a lateral axis L2. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 1 comprises a first side panel 10 foldably connected to a top panel 20 at a first lateral fold line 21, a second side panel 30 foldably connected to the first side panel 20 at a second lateral fold line 31, and a bottom panel 40 foldably connected to the second side panel 30 at a third lateral fold line 41. In the illustrated embodiment, an adhesive flap 50 is foldably connected to the first side panel 10 at a fourth lateral fold line 51.
[00018] The first side panel 10 is foldably connected to a first side end flap 12 and a second side end flap 14. The top panel 20 is foldably connected to a first top end flap 22 and a second top end flap 24. The second side panel 30 is foldably connected to a first side end flap 32 and a second side end flap 34. The bottom panel 40 is foldably connected to a first bottom end flap 42 and a second bottom end flap 44. When the carton 3 is erected, the end flaps 12, 22, 32, 42 close one end 53 of the carton, and the end flaps 14, 24, 34, 44 close a second end 55 of the carton. In accordance with an alternative embodiment of the present disclosure, different flap arrangements can be used for closing the ends 53, 55 of the carton 3.
[00019] The end flaps 12, 22, 32, 42 may extend along a first marginal area of the blank 1, and may be foldably connected at a first longitudinal fold line 62 that extends along the length of the blank. The end flaps 14, 24, 34, 44 may extend along a second marginal area of the blank 1, and may be foldably connected at a second longitudinal fold line 64 that also extends along the length of the blank. The longitudinal fold lines 62, 64 may be, for example, substantially straight, or offset at one or more locations to account for blank thickness or for other factors. [00020] The dispenser 5 includes a dispenser panel, generally indicated at 72, removably attached to the blank 1 at a tear line, generally indicated at 74. As shown in Fig. 5, when the dispenser panel 72 is removed, a dispenser opening 75 is formed in the carton 3 to allow food products B to be removed from the carton. The dispenser opening 75 is generally shaped to correspond to the shape of the tear line 74. In the illustrated embodiment, the dispenser panel 72 includes a first portion 77 in the first side end flap 12 of the blank 1, a second portion 79 in the first side panel 10, a third portion 81 in the top panel 20, a fourth portion 83 in the second side panel 30, a fifth portion 85 in the second side end flap 32, and a sixth portion 87 that comprises substantially all of the top end flap 22. The dispenser panel 72 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the scope of the disclosure.
[00021] In the illustrated embodiment, the tear line 74 includes a first portion 84 extending generally in the lateral direction L2 in the first side end flap 12 from a free edge 89 of the first side end flap 12 to the longitudinal fold line 62. The tear line 74 comprises a second portion 86 in the first side panel 10 that is curved and extends from the intersection of the first portion 84 with the longitudinal fold line 62 to the lateral fold line 21. The tear line 74 includes a third portion 88 in the top panel that is curved and extends between the lateral fold line 21 and the lateral fold line 31. The tear line 74 has a fifth portion 92 that extends generally in the lateral direction L2 in the second side end flap 32 from the longitudinal fold line 62 to a free edge 95 of the second side end flap 32. The first portion 84, second portion 86, third portion 88, fourth portion 90, and fifth portion 92 of the tear line are generally continuous to form the dispenser panel 72. The tear line 74 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the scope of this disclosure.
[00022] In the illustrated embodiment, the bottom end flap 42 has a base portion 103 adjacent to the fold line 62. The bottom end flap 42 has a retention portion 105 that is adjacent the base portion 103 and extending from the base portion to a free edge 107 of the bottom end flap. In the illustrated embodiment, the free edge 107 is curved and is generally arc-shaped, but the free edge could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured. In one embodiment, the base portion 103 has a width equal to the distance Dl (Fig. 1) and the retention portion 105 has a maximum width corresponding to the distance D2. Accordingly, the bottom end flap 42 has a maximum width corresponding to the distance D3 (Fig. 1) that is the sum of the distance Dl (the width of the base portion 103) and the distance D2 (the maximum width of the retention portion 105. The bottom end flap 42 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.
[00023] In one embodiment, the first portion 84 of the tear line 74 in the first side end flap 12 is spaced apart from the fold line 51 by a distance D4 to form a retaining portion 109 in the first side end flap that is adjacent the first portion 77 of the dispenser panel 72. When the dispenser panel 72 is removed, (Fig. 5) the retaining portion 109 of the side end flap 12 remains at the end 53 of the carton 3. The fifth portion 92 of the tear line 74 in the second side end flap 32 is spaced apart from the fold line 41 by a distance D5 to form a retaining portion 11 1 in the second side end flap that is adjacent the fifth portion 85 of the dispenser panel 72. The retaining portions 109, 111 combine to form a retaining panel 112 in the end 53 of the carton. The retaining panel 112 is sized to retain at least the bottom layer of food products B and prevent the bottom row of food products from falling out of the dispenser opening 75. The retaining portions 109, 111, and/or the retaining panel 112 can be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.
[00024] In accordance with the exemplary embodiment, the blank 1 can be erected into the carton 3 by folding along fold lines 21, 31, 41, 51 and adhering the adhesive flap 50 to the bottom panel 40 to form an interior 113 of the carton. In one embodiment, the partially formed carton is a generally open-ended sleeve having both ends 53, 55 open to the interior 113 of the carton 3. The end 55 of the carton 3 can first be closed by respectively overlapping and adhering the end flaps 14, 24, 34, 44. Food products B or other articles can be inserted into the interior 113 of the carton 3. Next, the end 53 can be closed by respectively overlapping and adhering the end flaps 12, 22, 32, 42. Other carton forming, loading, and/or closing steps can be incorporated without departing from the scope of this disclosure. Further, the steps listed and described herein can be revised and/or eliminated without departing from the scope of the disclosure.
[00025] As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the dispenser panel 72 may be removed from the carton 3 to form the dispenser opening 75. In alternative embodiments, the carton can have access features for gaining access to the dispenser panel 72 to facilitate grasping the dispenser panel and tearing the dispenser panel along the tear line 74. Once the dispenser panel 72 is grasped the dispenser panel is removed from the carton by tearing along the tear line 74 to form the dispenser opening 75.
[00026] As shown in Fig. 5, the retaining portions 109, 111 are overlapped and extend across the end 53 of the carton 3 to form the retention panel 112 that assists in retaining the food products Bl in the interior 113 of the carton. The retention portion 105 of the bottom end flap 42 extends into the dispenser opening above the top edge 121 of the retention panel 112 to retain food products B2 in the top layer of food products in the interior 113 of the carton. The retention features (e.g., retaining portions 109, 11 1 and retention portion 105) restrict the removal of the food products from the carton 3 after the dispenser panel 72 has been removed so that the carton can be carried in an opened state (with the dispenser panel removed).
[00027] It is understood that the dispenser panel 72 and tear line 74 may be otherwise sized and shaped to correspond with various other sizes and shapes of food products B which may be housed in the carton 3. In one embodiment, the height of the retention panel 112 is equal to the distances D4, D5 and the height of the retention panel is approximately equal to the width Dl of the base portion 103 of the bottom end flap. In the illustrated embodiment, the distances Dl, D4, and D5 are all approximately equal to the maximum height of the bottom layer of food products Bl . In one embodiment, the width D2 of the retention portion 105 of the bottom end flap 42 is approximately equal to the maximum height of the top layer of food products B2. As such, the total height D3 of the bottom end flap 42 is approximately equal to the total height of the two layers of food products Bl, B2. The bottom end flap 42, base portion 103, and/or retention portion 105 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. As shown in Fig. 5, the retaining portion extends upward into the dispenser opening 75 such that the arc-shaped free edge 107 of the bottom end flap 42 has respective ends 131, 133 that are adjacent to the top edge 121 of the retention panel 112. The arc-shaped free edge 107 of the bottom end flap 42 has an apex 137 that is located at or above the top of the uppermost layer of food products B2. The arc shape of the free edge 107 of the bottom end flap 42 allows the endmost food product of the top layer of food products B2 to be visible at its respective ends, and allows the central portion of the endmost food product of the top layer of the food product to be in contact with the retention portion 105 to retain the endmost food product of the top layer of food products in the carton 3. The bottom end flap 42 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.
[00028] The present disclosure can be used in cartons that include various features, including additional opening features that provide easy access to the articles, and tilt features that position the articles at the front or rear end of the carton.
[00029] The blank according to any of the embodiments of the present disclosure can be, for example, formed from coated paperboard and similar materials. For example, the interior and/or exterior sides of the blank can be coated with a clay coating. The clay coating may then be printed over with product, advertising, price coding, and other information or images. The blank may then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blank. The blank may also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer, on either or both sides of the blank. In accordance with the above-described embodiments, the blank may be constructed of paperboard of a caliper such that it is heavier and more rigid than ordinary paper. The blank can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, hard paper, or any other material having properties suitable for enabling the carton to function at least generally as described above. The blank can also be laminated to or coated with one or more sheet-like materials at selected panels or panel sections.
[00030] The term "line" as used herein includes not only straight lines, but also other types of lines such as curved, curvilinear or angularly displaced lines. [00031] The above embodiments are described as having one or more panels adhered together by glue. The term "glue" is intended to encompass all manner of adhesives commonly used to secure carton panels in place.
[00032] In accordance with the exemplary embodiments, a fold line can be any substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, form of weakening that facilitates folding therealong. More specifically, but not for the purpose of narrowing the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines include: a score line, such as lines formed with a blunt scoring knife, or the like, which creates a crushed or depressed portion in the material along the desired line of weakness; a cut that extends partially into a material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of cuts that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these features. In situations where cutting is used to create a fold line, typically the cutting will not be overly extensive in a manner that might cause a reasonable user to incorrectly consider the fold line to be a tear line.
[00033] As an example, a tear line can include: a slit that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of spaced apart slits that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness, or various combinations of these features. As a more specific example, one type tear line is in the form of a series of spaced apart slits that extend completely through the material, with adjacent slits being spaced apart slightly so that a nick (e.g., a small somewhat bridging-like piece of the material) is defined between the adjacent slits for typically temporarily connecting the material across the tear line. The nicks are broken during tearing along the tear line. The nicks typically are a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively the nicks can be omitted from or torn in a tear line such that the tear line is a continuous cut line. That is, it is within the scope of the present disclosure for each of the tear lines to be replaced with a continuous slit, or the like. For example, a cut line can be a continuous slit or could be wider than a slit without departing from the present disclosure.
[00034] The foregoing description of the disclosure illustrates and describes various embodiments of the present disclosure. As various changes could be made in the above construction without departing from the scope of the disclosure, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the scope of the present disclosure covers various modifications, combinations, alterations, etc., of the above-described embodiments that are within the scope of the claims. Additionally, the disclosure shows and describes only selected embodiments of the disclosure, but the disclosure is capable of use in various other combinations, modifications, and environments and is capable of changes or modifications within the scope of the inventive concept as expressed herein, commensurate with the above teachings, and/or within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. Furthermore, certain features and characteristics of each embodiment may be selectively interchanged and applied to other illustrated and non-illustrated embodiments of the disclosure without departing from the scope of the disclosure.
