Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MAKING AN OBJECT WITH A RFID DEVICE APPLIED THEREON
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for making a product with an RFID device applied thereon, for example an electronic ticket for using services, such as, for example, a train ticket, a public local transport ticket, a ticket granting admittance to exhibitions, museums, etc, a label, a card, a certificate, etc. Electronic tickets of contactless type are known, i.e. tickets that are readable at a distance by a reading device, which are made by inserting an RFID device, consisting of an antenna to which a microchip is connected, between two layers of printed paper or printed plastic, which is normally self-adhesive.
The antenna of the RFID can be made of engraved metal, of metal wire or can be printed with conductive ink. The registered coupling of the two layers of paper or of plastic with images printed in front of and behind the RFID device is a particularly complicated process that requires extremely precise and very expensive equipment. An object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus that enables an object to be made simply and cheaply with an RFID device applied thereon. The objects of the invention are achieved with a method according to the claim 1 and with an apparatus according to claims 13 and 16.
The inventor of this patent application has discovered that it is possible to make an object with an RFID device applied thereon without it being necessary to insert the RFID device between two layers of paper or of plastic, but simply by applying the device to one of the external faces of the object . This is made easier, by, for example, using RFID devices in a UHF band with the . antenna in loop or some other configuration, that have significantly reduced dimensions, for example with a diameter of a tenth of a millimetre or little more and they can thus be applied to an external face of the object as if they were a hologram or any other decoration. Th invention will now be disclosed in detail, with reference to the attached drawings that illustrate some embodiments thereof by way of non- limiting example, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of an electronic ticket that is obtainable with the method and the apparatus according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention;
Figure 3 is a further embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention. In Figure 1 there is illustrated an object 1 that is obtainable with the method and the apparatus according to the invention.
The object 1 comprises a substrate 2 of paper, or plastic or cloth, that can be painted also simultaneously on both sides with written messages and/or images and/or decorations and/or holograms. To one side 2a of the substrate 2 there is applied an RFID device 3, comprising a microchip 4 connected to an antenna 5. To the microchip 4 a printed graphic element 6 is applied, which may consist of an image, or a hologram, or a written message, on a monochrome or polychrome background. The ticket 1 may be completed by a film F of transparent or non-transparent protective material applied to the side of the ticket to which the RFID device 3 is applied. In Figure 2 there is illustrated a first embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention that is suitable for making an object, such as, for example, an electronic ticket, to which a RFID device is applied. The apparatus 8 comprises a first reel 9 on which the substrate 2 is wrapped on which the RFID devices 3 are intended to be applied. The substrate 2 is unwound from the first reel 9 and guided to a first applying device 11 intended for applying the RFID devices 3 to the substrate 2. The first applying device 11 comprises a third reel 12 on which a transferring support 13 is wound, to which has been applied a plurality of RFID devices 3.
The transferring support 13 is a support that is suitable for enabling a subsequent transfer of the RFID devices 3 to a surface 2a of the substrate 2 also through simple pressure of the transferring support 13 on the surface 2a of the substrate 2, on which an adhesive substance can be possibly applied.
Alternatively, on the RFID devices 3 a layer of adhesive can be applied that is activatable, for example, by heat, UV rays, ultrasound, electron bombardment or chemical reaction. The transferring support 13 is unwound from the third reel 12 , guided above the substrate 2 intended for receiving the RFID devices 3, near said substrate 2, and passed under a first transferring device 14, that presses the RFID devices 3 on the surface 2a of the substrate 2 to transfer the RFID devices 3 from the transferring support 13 to the substrate 2. The first transferring device 14, in addition to pressing the RFID devices 3 on the surface 2a of the substrate 2 , activates the layer of adhesive applied to said surface 2a, or to the RFID devices 3 heating the layer of adhesive by pressure, or heat generating means, or subjecting the layer of adhesive to ultrasound action or to the action of UV rays or to electron bombardment by, respectively, ultrasound generating means, UV ray generating means or electron generating means, or to the action of any other means that is suitable for transferring the RFID devices 3 to the substrate 2, by activating the adhesive, which makes the RFID devices 3 adhere to the substrate 2 , detaching the RFID devices 3 from the transferring support 13. After applying the RFID devices 3 to the substrate 2, the transferring support 13 is rewound on a fourth reel 15. The first applying device 11 can be provided with a testing device 21, which is suitable for testing that the RFID devices 3 operate correctly and for stopping the transfer of an RFID device 3 on the substrate 2, if it detects a faulty operation of said RFID device 3, advancing the transferring support 13 without applying the RFID device 3. The substrate 2, with the RFID devices 3 applied thereon, is subsequently guided to a second applying device 16 that is intended for applying to each RFID device 3 on the substrate 2 a respective printed graphic element 6.
The second applying device 16 comprises a fifth reel 17 on which a further transferring support 18 is wound. On the further transferring support 18 a plurality of graphic elements 6 has been printed, for example in one or more colours, for example using silkscreen printing. In the case of printing with several colours, the order of printing of the colours is reversed so that the first applied colour is the one intended to constitute the external surface of the graphic element 6, when the latter is applied to a RFID device 3.
The further transferring support 18 is a support that is suitable for enabling a subsequent transfer of the graphic elements 6 to corresponding RFID devices 3 applied to the surface 2a of the substrate 2, also through simple pressure of the further transferring support 18 on said RFID devices 3, to which an adhesive substance can possibly be applied. Alternatively, to each graphic element 6 a layer of adhesive 7 can be applied, (Figure 1) , which is activatable for example, by heat, UV rays, ultrasound, electron bombardment, or chemical reaction; or the last ink used for printing the graphic element 6 can have adhesive properties, activatable, for example, by heat, UV rays, ultrasound, electron bombardment, or chemical reaction. The further transferring support 18, is guided above the substrate 2, to which the RFID devices 3 were previously applied, near said substrate 2, and passed underneath a second transferring device 19, that presses each graphic element 6 on a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the surface 2a of the substrate 2, to transfer each graphic element 6 from the further transferring support 18 above a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2. The second transferring device 19, in addition to pressing each graphic element 6 on a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2, activates the layer of adhesive 7 applied to each RFID device 3, or to each graphic element 6, or the last ink, having adhesive properties, used for printing the graphic element 6, heating layer of adhesive 7 by heat generating means, or subjecting the graphic element 6 to the action of ultrasound, or to the action of UV rays or to electron bombardment by, respectively, ultrasound generating means, UV ray generating means or electron generating means, or to the action of any other means suitable for enabling the graphic element 6 to be transferred to a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2, activating the adhesive, or the last ink of the graphic element 6, which makes the graphic element 6 adhere to an RFID device 3 and to the substrate 2 , detaching the graphic element 6 from the further transferring support 18. After applying the graphic elements 6 to the RFID devices 3 , the further transferring support 18 is rewound on a sixth reel 20, whilst the substrate 2 to which the RFID devices 3 and the graphic elements 6 have been applied is rewound on a second reel 10, to be then sent to possible subsequent processes, such as, for example cutting of the substrate 2 to obtain single objects 1, each with a respective RFID device applied thereon and/or the application of a transparent or non- transparent protective film F to said surface 2a.
In the apparatus 8 illustrated in Figure 2 the substrate 2 is a substrate in the form of a continuous ribbon. Alternatively to the substrate 2 in the form of a continuous ribbon, it is possible to use a substrate 2 consisting of a plurality of discrete substrate elements, contained in a storage element (which is not shown) from which the single substrate elements are extracted and conveyed to a first transferring position, in which the first applying device 11 applies an RFID device 3 to each substrate element, and, subsequently, to a second transferring position in which the second applying device 16 applies a graphic element 6 to the RFID device 3. Lastly, the substrate element with the RFID device 3 and the graphic element 6 applied thereon is sent to a collecting container (which is not shown) .
The apparatus 8 can also be used for applying the RFID devices 3 and the graphic elements 6 directly to the surface of any discrete objects. In this case the first reel 9 and the second reel 10 will be replaced by a conveyor belt or other suitable conveying system with which said objects will be conveyed .
In Figure 3 there is illustrated a second embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention. In this second embodiment the apparatus 22 comprises a first reel 23 on which the substrate 2 is wound on which a plurality of RFID devices 3 was made with known techniques and apparatuses, for example with those disclosed in patent application MO2005A000017 in the name of the same applicant. The substrate 2 is unwound from the first reel 23 and guided to an applying device 25 that is similar to the second applying device 16 used in the embodiment of an apparatus 8 according to the invention illustrated in Figure 2 and disclosed previously. The applying device 25 comprises a third reel 27 on which a transferring support 26 is wound.
On the transferring support 26 a plurality of graphic elements 6 has been printed, for example in one or more colours, for example using silkscreen printing. In the case of printing with several colours, the order of printing of the colours is reversed, so that the first applied colour is the one intended to constitute the external surface of the graphic element 6, when the latter is applied to a corresponding RFID device 3 on the substrate 2. The transferring support 26 is a support that is suitable for enabling a subsequent transfer of the graphic elements 6 on corresponding RFID devices applied to the substrate 2, also by simply pressing the transferring support 26 on said RFID devices, to which an adhesive substance can be possibly applied. Alternatively, to each graphic element 6 a layer of adhesive 7 can be applied, that is activatable, for example, by heat, UV rays, ultrasound, electron bombardment, or chemical reaction; or the last ink used for printing the graphic element 6 can have adhesive properties, activatable, for example, by heat, UV rays, ultrasound, electron bombardment, or chemical reaction. The further transferring support 26, is guided above the substrate 2, on which the RFID devices 3 were previously made, near said substrate 2, and passed underneath a transferring device 29 that presses each graphic element 6 on a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the surface 2a of the substrate 2, to transfer each graphic element 6 from the transferring support 26 above a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2. The second transferring device 29, in addition to pressing each graphic element 6 to a corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2, activates the adhesive applied to the RFID device, or the layer of adhesive 7 applied to each graphic element 6, or the last ink, having adhesive properties, used for printing the graphic element 6, heating the layer of adhesive 7 by heat generating means, or subjecting the graphic element 6 to the action of ultrasound, or to the action of UV rays or to electron bombardment by, respectively, ultrasound generating means, UV ray generating means or electron generating means, or to the action of any other means suitable for enabling the graphic element 6 to be transferred to the corresponding RFID device 3 applied to the substrate 2, activating the adhesive, or the last ink of the graphic element 6, which makes the graphic element 6 adhere to the RFID device 3, detaching the transferring support 26 from the graphic element 6.
After applying the graphic elements 6 to the RFID devices 3, the transferring support 26 is rewound on a fourth reel 28, whilst the substrate 2 to which the RFID devices 3 and the graphic elements 6 have been applied is rewound on a second reel 24, to be then sent to possible subsequent processes, for example cutting the substrate 2 to obtain single objects 1, each with a respective RFID device applied thereon, and/or applying a transparent or non-transparent protective film F to said surface 2a.
The apparatus 22 can also be used for applying the RFID devices 3 and the graphic elements 6 directly to the surface of any discrete objects. In this case the first reel 23 and the second reel 24 will be replaced by a conveyor belt or other conveying system, with which said objects will be conveyed, to which the RFID devices 3 will be applied beforehand. The first applying device 11 of the apparatus 8 can be provided with sensor means 30 that is suitable for enabling the RFID devices 3 to be transferred to a preset position on the substrate 2, for example in a preset position with respect to written messages and/or images printed on the substrate 2.
The second applying device 16 of the apparatus 8 and the applying device 25 of the apparatus 22 can be provided with further sensor means 31 for detecting the position of the RFID devices 3 applied to the substrate 2, when it is near the respective applying device, so as to synchronise the respective transferring support with the substrate 2, to ensure the transfer of the graphic elements 6 to a correct position on the respective RFID devices 6. The apparatus 8 illustrated in Figure 2 enables a significant productive flexibility because it enables the person using the apparatus 8 not to be bound to procure the substrate 2 and the RFID devices from the same manufacturer and further enables both substrates 2 in the form of a continuous ribbon, and substrates 2 in the form of discrete elements to be used. The apparatus 22 illustrated in Figure 3 enables a particularly high productivity and it is thus suitable for large-scale production.
