Definitions

  • the p ⁇ esent invention relates to a package and to blanks for making the package.
  • the invention relates to a side opening package for smoking articles, but is not limited thereto.
  • smoking article includes smokeable products such as cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos whether based on tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco or tobacco substitutes and also heat-not- burn products, but is not limited thereto.
  • the smoking article may be provided with a filter for the gaseous flow drawn by the smoker.
  • Packages formed from a cardboard blank, or multiple cardboard blanks, are known to those skilled in the art and are commonly used in the cigarette industry for holding smoking articles, such as cigarettes. Such packages generally hold between ten to twenty individual cigarettes in a predetermined arrangement.
  • a known side opening package for smoking articles is disclosed in WO 2006/061719 in which a package is disclosed having an outer shell comprising a bottom face from which upstands along respective edges a front face, a rear face and a side face which extends along an edge between the front and rear faces.
  • a top face faces the bottom face and the outer shell forms a cavity which partially contains an inner shell.
  • the inner shell has front, rear, top, bottom, left side and right side walls which together form a smoking article receiving space formed therebetween.
  • the side walls, bottom and top walls of such a package have a width which is less than the width of the front and rear walls.
  • Such a package typically comprises an outer shell and an inner shell which are hingedly connected, the bottom face of the outer shell being hinged to the bottom wall of the inner shell along a width of the bottom wall, such that they can rotate relative to each other along a common axis extending between the front and rear walls between an 'open' position, wherein smoking articles disposed in a smoking article receiving space defined in the inner shell are accessible, and a 'closed' position, wherein smoking articles disposed in a smoking article receiving space defined in the inner shell are inaccessible.
  • the outer shell defines a cavity which partially contains the inner shell when the package is disposed in the closed position, such that a top wall and side wall of the outer shell enclose the opening formed in the inner shell to access the smoking article receiving space.
  • Smoking articles are contained in the smoking article receiving space and are accessible through an opening formed in the inner shell, which is accessible when the package is in its open position, that is the inner shell extends from the outer- shell such that the opening is exposed, and is not accessible when the package is in its closed position, that is the inner shell is partially disposed in the cavity defined by the outer shell such that the opening is not exposed.
  • the side opening cigarette package includes tabs extending between the front and rear walls of the outer shell and respective front and rear faces of the inner shell which fold when the pack is moved between its open and closed positions and which thereby flex the front and rear walls of the outer shell as the outer shell is moved relative to the inner shell and so cause the outer shell to be biased into the open or closed position due to the resilience of the outer shell front and rear faces.
  • a user opening or closing such a package holds and levers the outer shell by placing their fingers on the front and rear wall of the outer shell. This imparts a pressure on the front and rear walls of the outer shell and so the bowing of said walls is restricted. If the user holds the package in this way, it is difficult for the outer shell to be moved relative to the inner shell because the outer shell is unable to defo ⁇ m and so the tabs are restricted from biasing the outer shell into the open or closed position and the tabs may be damaged.
