Description

MANUAL ACCELERATION AND/OR BRAKING SYSTEM HAVING SEPARATED SECTORS
The present invention relates to a manual acceleration and/or braking system having separated sectors.
More specifically, the invention concerns a system of the above kind permitting a much more sensitive and homogeneous adjustment of acceleration or braking.
. As it is well known, during last decades, different system for manual acceleration have been suggested in order to help driving to handicapped people.
Among the solutions that had a better success, and that during the years, since the 60', has been subject matter of patents by the same Applicant, it is to be mentioned the one providing a wheel, concentric with respect to the steering wheel, and provided above or under the same.
Said solution, which was surely valid and almost unique for many years7can-be-surely~ improved as-far-as -acceleration-homogeneity- and sensitivity are concerned.
In this situation it is included the solution suggested according to the present invention permitting obtaining a more homogeneous and sensitive acceleration or braking adjustment thanks to the new type of potentiometer employed and to its innovative structure. New arrangement of the acceleration and/or braking system according to the invention permits using it on every kind of steering wheel, thus ensuring proper operation of the "air bag".
These and other results are obtained according to the present invention suggesting a manual acceleration and/or braking system providing two wings, symmetrically provided with respect to the steering wheel, so as to permit acceleration using every hand, action on one or the other wing involving an analogous displacement of the other wing, so that, if while driving the driver changes the wing on which he is acting, the one on which he/she now acts is in the same acceleration or braking condition.
It is therefore specific object of the present invention a manual acceleration and/or braking system that can be coupled above or below a steering wheel, said system comprising two acceleration and/or braking elements, symmetrically provided with respect to the central axis of said steering wheel, each one of said acceleration and/or braking elements being independently coupled to said steering wheel, so as to have an outward rotative and always parallel motion with respect to said steering wheel, each one of said two acceleration and/or braking elements independently and/or at same time interacting on a potentiometer, transferring acceleration control to the vehicle acceleration system, being it provided mechanical means for coupling the motion of said two acceleration and/or braking elements.
Preferably, according to the invention, said two acceleration and/or braking elements are comprised of two wing-shaped elements.
Still according to the invention, coupling between said acceleration and/or braking elements and the steering wheel can be adjusted by slots, permitting its fitting on every existing steering wheel.
Always according to the invention, coupling between each acceleration element and the steering wheel is obtained by a parallelogram structure, permitting obtaining an outward rotative motion with respect to the steering wheel, and maintaining said acceleration and/or braking elements always parallel with respect to the same steering wheef. ~ ~
Preferably, according to the invention, said mechanical means for coupling motion of the two acceleration and/or braking elements are comprised of two toothed wheels, rotatably pivoted on a plate, and meshed each other, one end of each one of said two acceleration and/or braking elements being coupled by pivoting on the relevant toothed wheel, so that each movement of one of said acceleration and/or braking elements corresponds to an identical movement of the other acceleration and/or braking elements, even without acting on the same.
Furthermore, according to the invention, said potentiometer is a sliding contact potentiometer.
Still according to the invention, said potentiometer is a linear potentiometer or a rotative potentiometer. The present invention will be now described, for illustrative but not limitative purposes, according to its preferred embodiments, with particular reference to the figures of the enclosed drawings, wherein: figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment of the manual acceleration and/or braking system according to the invention applied on a steering wheel; figure 2 is a perspective exploded view of the acceleration and/or braking system - steering wheel assembly of figure 1; figure 3 is a schematic top view of system of figure 1 ; figure 4 is a first bottom view of the system according to the invention in a first position; and figure 5 is a second bottom view of the system according to the invention in a second position.
An embodiment of the system according to the invention provided above the steering wheel is shown in the figures, but it is well evident that it can also be provided under the steering wheel, without departing from the scope of the invention. Observing the figures of the enclosed drawings, it is shown a steering wheel , generically indicated by reference A, on which a manual acceleration and/or braking system according to the invention is mounted, that will be described in greater detail in the following, with reference to all the figures. Particularly, manual acceleration and/or braking system according to the invention provides two wings 1, which are concentric with respecfto steerlhg~wheel A. - — -
Said wings 1 are supported by support 2m to which they are coupled by screws passing through slots 3. Said slots 3permit adjustment of wings 1 on the basis of the steering wheel A diameter.
Said supports 2 have holes 5 permitting coupling of levers 6, 7 for transmitting motion. Fixing of lever 6 occurs by spine 8
Ends of levers 6, 7 opposed with respect to support 2 are connected to a further support 9 by other spine 8. Fixing of levers 6, 7 permits a rotative motion outward with respect to the steering wheel A (see particularly figure 5), while their configuration as a parallelogram will maintain wings 1 always parallel I with respect to the steering wheel A.
Lever 6 provides on its ends, in correspondence of support 9, an appendix 10, preferably having a spherical shape, acting on potentiometer 11 , of the sliding contact type, but that could be a different type of potentiometer such as a rotative or linear potentiometer.
Support 9 is anchored to a bracket 12, permitting final coupling to the steering wheel A. The whole mechanism is covered and protected by a cover 13.
New wings, provided aside the steering wheel A, permit remarkably improving visual of instrument dashboard. Observing figure 3, it is noted that movement of two wings 1 is made integral by a pair of toothed wheels, rotatably pivoted on plate 13, and coupled, each one, by pivoting, to a relevant wing 1 , so that action on one of wings 1 is transmitted to the other wing 1 on which the driver is not acting on. Thus, even changing the hand by which the acceleration or braking action is exerted, the user always finds the mechanism in the same acceleration or braking position.
AJI the new components have been studied in order to make the use more comfortable and safe with respect to known solutions, so that acceleration can occur acting only on one of the two wings 1 , thus permitting to the driver to maintain the other hand firmly grasping the steering wheel A.
The present invention has been described for illustrative but not limitative purposes, according to its preferred embodiments, but it is to be understood that modifications and/or changes can be introduced by those skilled in the art without departing from the relevant scope as defined in the enclosed claims. ... . . _
