Abstract
A descaling device (E) comprises at least one descaling zone (4 to 6) in which a number of nozzles (7) are arranged that allow a liquid descaling medium (8) to be sprayed at a high pressure onto a metal billet (3) which is to be descaled. The nozzles (7) are connected to a high-pressure pipe system (9) via which the liquid descaling medium (8) can be fed to the nozzles (7). A pump (11) which is driven by an electric motor (13) and allows the liquid descaling medium (8) to be conducted at a high pressure from a low-pressure supply network (12) into the high-pressure pipe system (9) is connected to the high-pressure pipe system (9). A high-pressure storage unit (14) from which the high-pressure liquid descaling medium (8) can be discharged is connected to the high-pressure pipe system (9). The electric motor (13) is connected to an electric power supply system (16) via a converter (17). The converter (17) is connected to a control device (18) for control purposes. The control device (18) is designed such that the same controls the converter (17) in such a way that the electric motor (13) is operated at a variable speed (n).
