Abstract
The present invention relates to a system for providing utility computing in a cloud-computing environment. A client side computing device is connected to the internet, an authentication component takes care of user and device authentication, a network tracking component tracks network characteristics of every client device, a software synchronization component tracks the software state of every client device, a subscription component enables the users to subscribe to services and applications offered, a desktop management component manages the user desktops, an online help component provides help mechanisms to the user, a billing and payment component takes care of prepaid and postpaid billing and payment, an applications and services component provides the applications to the user, a usage tracking component tracks usage information, a parental control component controls websites and applications used and a user portal component acts as the user's interface.
Claims
1. A utility computing system adapted to provide utility computing in a cloud computing environment wherein the improvement comprising: client side computing device connected to the internet adapted to act as an interface to users for providing applications and services; one or more servers placed in server farms; and network means adapted to operatively connect said client side computing device to said server farm and proactively managing said network, wherein said client side computing device includes Desktop Management Component and Network Tracking Component, wherein said client side computing device runs a set of applications and utilities to ensure that the user has access to his/her application/service of interest,
Wherein said applications are provided dynamically across different bandwidths, wherein said components at server side comprising: Authentication Component;
Software Synchronization Component;
Subscription Component;
Desktop Management Component;
Online Help Component; Billing and Payment Component;
Applications and Services Component;
Usage Tracking Component;
32 ^rental Control Component; and User Portal Component
Wherein said system enables applications and/or services that are accessed through diverse operating systems can be selectively and dynamically added, accessed and managed from anywhere, and Wherein said system measures the network characteristics including bandwidth, latency and packet losses.

A utility computing system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said client side computing device provides for accessing to said applications and services across operating systems at the said client side computing device without any requirement of installation, maintenance and upgrade at the said server side and client side for the system's end users.
3. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims lor 2, wherein said client side computing device is adapted for self managing to strictly control against unauthorized access and with means to tracks its state and synchronizes with said software synchronization component.

A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 3, wherein said client side computing device is made tamper proof thereby increasing security against user mistakes and intervention by securing the BIOS in the client side, wherein said BIOS is secured by making it dependent on the native secure operating system and using encryption in the invocation of said operating system.

5. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 4, wherein said client side computing device has an auto registration system which automatically registers the users to the utility cloud computing environment on the first boot-up.
6. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 5, said billing and payment component accepts and keeps track of the payments that the user does as subscription for services accepted and said component deals with other modes of prepaid and postpaid billing and payments.
7.A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 6, wherein the said client side computing device is adapted to play multimedia and streaming content and display the same on a VGA monitor or TV.
8. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 7, wherein said authentication component is adapted to take care of identity management by authenticating a device and user into the utility cloud computing environment.

A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 8, wherein said software synchronization component provides a mechanism to upgrade the software available in the client device to a later version ensuring that only the relevant software from the master list of software are updated and only the changed portions of these software are sent to the client device and thus optimizing on the network usage and the time required for installation.
10. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 9, wherein said subscription component comprises means for loading dnterent services, applications and to define the subscription rules for the service or application.

A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 10, wherein said desktop management system interacts with said subscription management component to ensure that user purchase is updated in the user's profile and manages the dynamic components of the desktop like a RSS feed component, personalized advertisement component, application, content and interface customization and personalization, etc.
12. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 11, said online help component comprises two sub- components:
(a) textual and graphical help component, wherein said textual and graphical help component is dynamically updated from the server side as and when there are changes; (b) online real time help component from the server farm, wherein the said online real time help component provides a chat environment for the user to interact with a customer service representative for help and queries.
13. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 12, wherein the said usage tracking component comprises a central component operatively interacting with the said client

A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 13, wherein the said application and service component is adapted to spread over different servers in the utility cloud computing environment such that the user can access a server in the farm that is closest to it from a network point of view (i.e.) the client-server connection that has the best network between them.
15. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 14, wherein said parental control component is adapted to ensure that the usage of a child's account is tracked selectively by authorized persons including his/her parent.
16. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 15, wherein said system includes data storage and the download manager components thereby ensuring that data from the internet is directly downloaded from the internet location to the data storage without affecting the client device network and can be viewed from said remote locations through a browser.
17. A utility computing system as claimed in anyone of claims 1 to 16, wherein said system includes remote surveillance component utilizes a webcam that is placed on the said client device to provide remote surveillance.
