Abstract

A method for intraocular imaging based on the direct acquisition of the flat aerial image generated by asperical lenses is proposed. This approach leads to the removal of the field lenses, guaranteeing that the least number of optical elements will be used. Based on this idea, we design a miniaturized camera apparatus able to capture the entire patient's retina. Patient-based and machine-based methods to auto-focus on the retina are discussed, and different variations of the initial design are provided. We propose an extended system able to visualize objects in the full posterior of the eye, as well as a light-emitting-diode-based transscleral illumination method that is applicable for uniform illumination of the retina and long-term observation.
