Abstract

The invention provides a device (10) for displaying an item for promotional purposes. The device (10) includes a platform (12) configured for receiving the item (14) to be promoted thereon and a light source (16) configured to shine upwards from the platform (12) and inwards into a translucent item (14) for promotional purposes.

Description

Title: A Promotional Device
Technical field of the invention
This invention relates to a device for displaying items for promotional purposes.
Background to the invention
The applicant is aware that branded retail items are competitively displayed and are promoted in various ways in retail shops. Typically, special temporary displays or promotional devices for items on promotion are placed where it is visible to potential clients. Another way to promote an item is to display an image or logo of an item near to the location of that article on the shelf in an attempt to attract attention to the promoted item and to set it apart from similar items.
The applicant is aware that the display of images is item specific and when the promotion is stopped, the image or the display for the image is discarded.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device which can be used to display promotional items at a retail shelf to set it apart from competitive products without the need to prepare a product specific image or product specific promotional item. It is a further object to display a product in such a way to attract attention to it.
General description of the invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a device for displaying an item for promotional purposes, which device includes: a platform configured for receiving the item to be promoted thereon; and a light source configured to shine upwards from the platform and inwards into an item for promotional purposes.
The device may be connectable to a power source, or preferably include a power source for powering the light source, in use.
The device may include a bracket for attaching the platform to a retail shelf.
It will be appreciated that the item itself is highlighted by the display, removing the need to prepare and displaying an image of the item. The device can therefore be used for a variety of items.
The light source could be configured to shine onto a non-translucent product but, preferably to shine upward into a translucent item such as a bottle of shower jell, shampoo, beverages and the like items so that the interior of the product is illuminated highlighting the product in an unusual and aesthetically pleasing manner.
The light source may preferably be an LED light source.
In the case where the light source is configured to shine upward or inward into a translucent item, a single bright or high intensity LED arranged inside the platform and configured to shine upward may be used. The colour of the LED may be white, a selected colour or variable. The LED may also be a bright LED and/ or selected or configured to alternate its colour.
The light may preferably be embedded into the platform. It will be appreciated that the light source will then be protected against damage, to some extent.
The platform may be configured to display one item only and fixed to a retail shelf by means of the bracket. In another embodiment, the platform may be in the form of a flat sheet to fit on a retail shelf and configured to display a plurality of the same items and the platform may be dimensioned to fit on the shelf. The light source may in this case be an array of evenly spaced LED's to illuminate a front row of a selected group of items or all of the items in the group on the shelf. It will be appreciated that the items to be promoted or highlighted may be arranged on top of the device on the shelf in the normal manner, while it is being illuminated, preferably shining upward into translucent items. It will further be appreciated that the sheets are removable to avoid the need to modify the shelves.
The light source is preferably a low voltage light source. The power source may include a transformer and/ or inverter to reduce the voltage and/ or to convert AC power to DC. The power source may include a battery of chemical cells. The battery may be rechargeable. The chemical cells may be flat and may be embedded or receivable in the flat sheet of the platform, or it may be connected to a battery pack by means of an extension chord and the battery pack may include a bracket to allow the battery pack to be attached to the retail shelf, preferably hidden from view of customers to prevent tampering.
The invention also extends to a method of promoting a retail item, which method includes the step of displaying a retail item on a device for displaying a retail item as described above.
The applicant believes that the promotional device, in accordance with the invention, provides a versatile and effective way to highlight an item, particularly translucent items, for promotional purposes. In use the flat sheet platform can be placed on a retail shelf and connected to a power source and the items can be displayed for retail on the platform on the shelf. In another, preferred, embodiment, the platform is dimensioned to receive one item only and the platform is attached to the front of a shelf on, or above, the shelf displaying the promoted items. One of the items is placed on the platform and highlighted. Detailed description of the invention
The invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of the device for displaying items for promotional purposes, in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the first embodiment of the device for displaying items for promotional purposes with a translucent bottle of soap displayed thereon;
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the first embodiment of the device for displaying items for promotional purposes with a translucent bottle of soap displayed thereon fixed to a retail shelf;
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a second embodiment of the device for displaying items for promotional purposes, in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 5 shows a perspective view of the second embodiment of the device for displaying items for promotional purposes with a front row of translucent bottles of soap displayed thereon.
Referring now to the drawings, the device for displaying items for promotional purposes, in accordance with the invention, is generally indicated by reference numeral 10.
In one example, figures 1, 2 and 3, the invention provides a device for displaying a translucent item 14 for promotional purposes. The device 10 includes a platform 12 configured for receiving the item 14 to be promoted thereon and an embedded a low voltage LED light source 16 configured to shine upwards from the platform into the item 14 to highlight the interior contents of the item. The device 10 further includes a bracket 18 for attaching the platform 12 to a retail shelf 17 and a power source 19 in the form of a rechargeable battery pack for powering the light source 16. The LED is known as a "rainbow" LED, which changes colours over time.
In another example, figures 4 and 5, the invention there is provided a device for displaying translucent items for promotional purposes. The device 10 includes a platform 12 configured for receiving the items 14 to be promoted thereon and a linear array of low voltage LED light sources 16 embedded in the platform and configured to shine upwards from the platform into the first row of displayed items 14 displayed on a retail shelf (not shown). The platform 12 is in the form of a flat sheet of plastics material dimensioned to fit onto a retail shelf (not shown). The device 10 further connected to a power source 19 by means of a power chord 20 in the form of a rechargeable battery pack for powering the light source 16. The LED is either e bright LED or an LED known as a "rainbow" LED, which changes colours over time. It will be appreciated that the items to be promoted or highlighted may be arranged on top of the device on the shelf in the normal manner, while it is being illuminated, preferably shining upward into translucent items. It will further be appreciated that the sheets are removable to avoid the shelves themselves to be modified.
It shall be understood that the examples are provided for illustrating the invention further and to assist a person skilled in the art with understanding the invention and are not meant to be construed as unduly limiting the reasonable scope of the invention.

Claims

1. A device for displaying an item for promotional purposes, which device includes: a platform configured for receiving the item to be promoted thereon; and a light source configured to shine upwards from the platform and inwards into an item for promotional purposes.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 , wherein the device includes a power source for powering the light source, in use.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, which includes a bracket for attaching the platform to a retail shelf.
4. A device as claimed in any one of the previous claims, wherein the light source is an LED light source.
5. A device as claimed in any one of the previous claims, wherein the light source is embedded in the platform.
6. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the platform is in the form of a flat sheet to fit on a retail shelf and configured to display a plurality of the same items and the platform may be dimensioned to fit on the shelf.
7. A device as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein the power source comprises a rechargeable battery pack.
8. A method of displaying an item for promotional purposes, which method includes the step of illuminating the item proximate a retail shelf with the device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7.
9. A device for displaying an item for promotional purposes substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
10. A method of displaying an item for promotional purposes substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
