Description

Apparatus and method for telecommunication clip management
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for clip management. Specifically, the apparatus and method are configured to manage the usage of clips in a clip telecommunication service of a telecommunication system.
Background of the invention
The use of multimedia content as ringtones, video ringback tones, ringback tones, personalized announcements, etc. plays a more and more important role for the users of telecommunication services, in particular mobile phone users. Throughout this description, such multimedia content will be referred to as clip, i.e. a clip shall be defined to comprise content comprising at least one of audio and video data. Usually, the content is digitized. E.g., a clip may consist of a digital audio file, a digital video file, digitized voice, text, a still picture and any combination thereof .
Nowadays, some telecommunication service provisioning systems, such as voice mail systems, video ringback tone systems etc., provide the option to store a personalized clip. Furthermore, such systems usually provide some predefined clips that may be slightly configured by the user, e.g. by inserting his name at a placeholder. The user may activate one of the clips when appropriate.
However, if the user wants to activate another personalized clip, he has to replace the personalized clips stored up to then. That is, he looses the earlier personalized clips. If he wants to reuse this clip later on, he has to re-arrange it again and to store it again on the telecommunication service provisioning system. This is quite annoying for the user, and in some cases may be even impossible, if some building blocks the earlier personalized clip was composed of are not available any more.
Also, the user may want to switch announcements even when he is not connected to the service provisioning system.
E.g., if a user has a substitute during the first part of his holidays and another substitute during the second part, the announcement indicating his absence and his substitute should automatically be changed without user interaction. In this case a second personalized announcement must be available to the system and activated at a predefined time.
Furthermore, users may want to use their personalized clips or at least the building blocks they are composed of in several clip telecommunication services. E.g., a background music may be used in the voice mail system and underlying a ringback tone. Today, it is hardly possible to transfer a clip of one service for use within another service.
Still further, users may want to distribute their personalized clips to other users. E.g. one user may have created a video ringback tone including some music, announcement and a photo of the user. Another user may like this video ringback tone. Today, it is hardly possible to retrieve the video ringback tone from the telecommunication system and even harder to replace some building blocks within the video ringback tone.
Also, users may want to purchase a video or music and use them for their clip telecommunication service. Nowadays, this requires use of a system outside the telecommunication system, and then transferring the clip to the telecommunication system. This method is hence quite tedious .

It is to be understood that in such an example the buttons comprise the functionality described below in connection with the folders. Also other graphical appearances may be conceivable which are all intended to fall under the scope as defined in the appended claims.
Moreover, the following embodiments are merely described by the options the user has, i.e. by the method. However, it is to be understood that the apparatus is configured to perform the corresponding activities.
According to an embodiment of the present invention shown in Fig. 1, the clip management apparatus comprises one or more computers 1 with one or more storage devices 2 connected thereto. The storage device (s) may be physically integrated with the computer (s) or physically separated. The software comprising the program instructions for the clip management apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention and the clips are stored on the storage device (s). Alternatively, some or all of the program instructions may be embodied in specialized processors.
The apparatus is connected to the internet 3 and provides a web-based user interface to a user 10.
The computers are further connected to the service provisioning devices 4, 5 (e.g. a Voice Mail System and a Ringback tone system) providing a clip telecommunication service in a telecommunication system 8, e.g. a public switched telephony network PSTN, a public land mobile network PLMN, or a private access branch exchangePABX. The interfaces 6, 7 between the clip managing apparatus and the service provisioning devices are appropriate to transfer and activate a clip from the former to the respective service provisioning device, e.g. based on http, sql, ftp.
Access to the user interface is secured, e.g. by username and password. Every user of the apparatus has its own username and password. The general structure of the user interface is the same for all users but the content of the user interface is user specific.
The user interface provides access to the functions of the clip management application. On top level, i.e. on the user's main page, these are:
— managing and archiving of clips; - making clips available (producing, purchasing, configuring, receiving from outside) ;
— providing of clips to the service provisioning devices providing a clip telecommunication service and, depending on the service provisioning device, activating them; - distributing clips to other users.
These functions are accessible from a folder structure, e.g. on the left-hand side of the user main page, and a menu bar at the top of the users main page. In detail, the folder structure comprises the following main folders:
— "My Content" (clip and file management) ;
— "My Clip Shaker" (clip production and configuration) ;
— "My Clipstore" (purchasing of clips from a webshop) :
In the present embodiment, the options for the provision of clips to a service provisioning device and their activation may be accessed from the menu bar only.
In the following, the functions will be described at a greater detail.
The apparatus comprises a storage system for clips, in the user's main page associated with the folder "My content". The user may freely manage the subfolder structure of the folder "My Content". In particular, he may create folders and sub-folders and (re) name them arbitrarily within the limits of the operating system of the apparatus. In general, the user may store clips arbitrarily within the folders but it is preferred that the user keeps to certain rules to facilitate the management of his clips. In the following, such a structure is described.
According to Fig. 2, the folder "My Content" comprises folders "My clips", "My Music", "My Video" and "My voice clips" .
Within the folder "My clips", finished clips are stored that may be readily used within a clip telecommunication service. The folder "My clips" allows to store finished or purchased clips in different folders according to different categories. E.g., there may be folders related to different kinds of absence messages or related to the season (Christmas, Oktoberfest, etc.). These clips may be activated when appropriate.
The menu items "My music", "My video", and "My voice clips" allow the user to store fragment clips for the production of new clips. The clips may be purchased from the webshop, or received by e-mail, either from the user himself or from another person. Thus, users may exchange clips. After receipt of an e-mail including a clip, the clip may be copied to the relevant folder by "drag & drop". Furthermore, predefined clips for specific users, e.g. the employees of a company, may be stored. To facilitate this, in one embodiment, the users are grouped in user groups.
In one embodiment, the folders comprise links to the clips instead of the clips themselves and the clips are stored separately. Thus, the organization of the storage can be optimized and be different from the folder structure. Also, two users may use the same clip without storing it twice.
In the folder "My music", licensed and unlicensed music may be stored that can be reused in different clips when desired by the user. E.g. the music may be related to the seasons (Christmas, Chinese New Year, etc.) or related to the long-term and short-term preferences of the user. Companies may store their corporate music there, optionally in different variants, to provide the corporate music to their employees when creating a new personalized clip.
Correspondingly, e.g. preferred videos, season-related videos and company videos may be stored in the folder "My Video". The video clips must not exceed a certain length and must have a predefined format.
In the folder "My voice clips" announcements or even sung texts may be stored that may be used e.g. as voice mail announcement or as ringtone. The announcements may be ordered from the webshop or spoken by the user via telephone or mobile phone. These last ones would be stored automatically as sound file in the folder "My Voice Clips".
Also, other digital content may be stored in one of the folders of "My Content", e.g. birthday congratulations spoken by the user and mixed with music. Such a clip may be sent to the birthday child by MMS (multimedia message service) .
According to Fig. 3, the folder "My Clip shaker" comprises the folders "My templates" and "Libraries". Here, the production of new clips is performed.
The user may modify clips on several layers and produce different kinds of clips. The layers are video, voice, and music, supplemented by a supporting layer "clip features" to modify e.g. volume, intro, and outro of the music. The music layer comprises two layers: On layer 1, music may be imported that pertains over the full clip and in layer 2, specific noise (e.g. fun noise) may be added at certain times. In general, any content element may be replaced by a placeholder building block or vice versa. Such placeholder building blocks may e.g. be used for later insertion of announcements such as a person's name, the name of a department, details of the service activation information such as holiday duration, a special seasonal greeting, and the like. To produce a clip, the user clicks on "New template" in the folder "My templates". A mask is opened to modify the clip. The user may import some clips from the folder "My content" and mix them. E.g. he may combine a self-spoken announcement from "My content" with a music clip of a license free library described below.
The user may also modify the clips purchased at the webshop and stored in "My content". E.g. the user may mix an announcement spoken by a professional speaker with seasonal music. I.e. the user may exchange the music element of the clip arbitrarily.
A user may be restricted in his selection of clips for producing a personalized clip. E.g. company users may only use the company music as background to their announcement.
Apart from combining several clips, the user may modify some settings of the clip such as the duration of music before or after an announcement (intro, outro) and its volume relative to the announcement. Modified but not finished clips may be stored in one of the template folders of "My clip shaker". After a clip has been finished, the user may store the clip in a folder of "My Content", and/or import it immediately to a service provisioning device, e.g. his voice mailbox. Further, it may be send via e-mail.
The folder "Libraries" comprises libraries from where the user may import different kinds of clips for the production of his personalized clips free of charge. For this, the user clicks on a library item, selects a clip from the library, and imports it into one of the folders of "My Content" for further use or directly into the mask of clip shaker to modify a clip (e.g. from "New template") for immediate use. The libraries may have different content. They may comprise special content for specific customers, e.g. VIP customers.
According to Fig. 4, the folder "My Clipstore" offers the following subfolders: "Mailbox Greetings", "Ringtones", "Videos", "Music", "Birthday Greetings", each of them comprising further subfolders, e.g. for different categories .
From the folder "My Clipstore" the user may purchase clips from a webstore. It may comprise finished clips as well as fragment clips for further use in the production of personalized clips. Apart from predefined general announcements e.g. for voice mail boxes, the webstore may offer recording specific announcements by a professional speaker, e.g. for a company. These announcements will be provided to the specific user(s) in the folder "My mailbox greetings" .
Furthermore, the webstore may be connected to other (third party) webstores such as music providing webstores to offer further content to the user.
The folder may further comprise a button in the horizontal menu bar forwarding the user to a special area, e.g. related to special occasions (football events, Christmas, etc . ) .
The finished clips may be used in several ways within the telecommunication system. The import to the corresponding service provisioning system and the activation of the clip must be started from the menu bar of the main page of the user or in some cases context-sensitively . The user has several options for an activation of a clip. E.g. mailbox announcements may be activated depending on date and time of the day. Thus, the user may activate and deactivate at once an absence message for several times of a day if he has several meetings on that day. Also, the user may activate and deactivate his holiday announcement replacing his standard announcement in one operation. The relevant clip is then automatically sent and activated to the voice mail system.
The automatic activation and deactivation is controlled by the service activation information. The service activation information is allocated to a clip, a user and a clip telecommunication service. I.e. all the pieces of service activation information comprised in a system may be visualized in a three-dimensional room with clip identification, user identification and clip telecommunication service identification as axes. In different embodiments, the service activation information is stored e.g. in a database, a file system or in tables of a spreadsheet program.
In one embodiment, the service activation information stores the date and time, when the allocated clip is to be activated. If another clip is to be activated, the first clip is replaced by the other clip in the service provisioning system. The service activation information may comprise several activation times when the clip has to be activated several times, as described above with respect to the user with several meetings.
In some embodiments, the service activation information may also comprise a flag to identify a currently active clip. In another embodiment, the service activation information may comprise date and time for activation and deactivation of a clip for a clip telecommunication service. In this case, if no other clip is activated for a user and a clip telecommunication service, a default clip will be activated. The default clip may be predefined by the user or predefined for a group of users, e.g. the members of a company.
In another embodiment, where the service provisioning system of the telecommunication network can store several clips simultaneously, the clip management apparatus provides several clips to the service provisioning system at once and activates or deactivates them based on the service activation information.
Ringtones and video-ringtones may be sent via MMS to the mobile phone and activated there by the user.
The MMS may be sent to another user of a mobile phone, too. This is supported by a function "send to a friend". Here, the user may optionally store a list of names and mobile phone numbers, to whom the user want to send ringtones or video-ringtones .
The MMS to the user or another user may be sent instantaneously on the corresponding user action or at a time configured within the service activation information. Thus, a user may send e.g. a special ringtone as a birthday present to another user, even if he is not connected to the clip management apparatus at that time.
Furthermore, the user may send and receive e-mails including clips and further process the received clips as any other stored clip. In some embodiments, some of the functions available on the web-based user interface are also provided on a correspondingly adapted user interface for a mobile phone, e.g. via WAP (wireless application protocol).
Described above are an apparatus, a method and a computer program product to administrate clips for a clip telecommunication service using a clip, wherein a clip comprises at least one of audio and video data. The clips can be transferred and activated on a service provisioning system of a telecommunication system providing a clip telecommunication service based on service activation information allocated to clip, a user and a service. Personalized clips may be configured based on other clips. A clip may be provided to other users. Clips may be supplied to the clip management apparatus by the user or another user, preconfigured in the apparatus, or purchased.
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but various variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims .
