Description

A DRILL BIT FOR USE IN SURGERY
This invention relates to a drill bit and, more especially, this invention relates to a drill bit for use in surgery. The drill bit may be used on various bone structures so that, for example, the drill bit may be used for dental implant surgery, or in maxillofacial prosthesis, for example for ears and noses.
During dental implant surgery, a hole is drilled into a person's jaw bone in order to enable a dental implant to be screwed into the jaw bone. A hole of a desired size is usually obtained by sequential drilling using dental drill bits of increasing size. It is often inconvenient to have to change drill bits in order to reach a drill bit of a required size. This problem also exists in other types of surgery, for example maxillofacial prosthesis. In addition, many persons receiving dental implants find the sequential drilling in order to increase in drill bit size to be somewhat unnerving.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide an improved drill bit which obviates or reduces the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a drill bit for use in surgery, which drill bit comprises a first drilling formation, a second and larger drilling formation, and a holder portion by which the drill bit is held in a drill, the first drilling formation being axially located on an end of the second drilling formation furthest from the holder portion, the first drilling formation being a triangle with cutting edges, the second drilling formation having a plurality of cutting flutes, and the first drilling formation being such it forms a tip to the second drilling formation and in use drills a pilot hole for the second drilling formation whilst at the same time facilitates the elimination of vibration and the prevention of slipping of the drill bit when drilling into curved bone surfaces.
The drill bit of the present invention is thus advantageous in a number of aspects as compared with existing drill bits. The drill bit of the present invention with its first and second drilling formations is able to eliminate the need for sequential drilling using two or more different sized drill bits. In addition, the drill bit facilitates the elimination of vibration and the prevention of slipping of the drill bit when drilling into curved bone surfaces. The elimination of the vibration is advantageous for the patient. The prevention of slipping of the drill bit is advantageous for the surgeon conducting the surgery, for example dental implant surgery.
The drill bit may be one in which the first drilling formation has a cutting diameter of approximately one fifth of the cutting diameter of the second drilling formation.
The drill bit may be one in which the first drilling formation has three triangular faces.
The second drilling formation preferably has three or four of the cutting flutes.
The drill bit may include a support portion located between the second drilling formation and the holder portion, the support portion being for receiving an abutment collar for limiting the depth of penetration of the drill bit. The abutment collar may be made of a plastics material or any other suitable and appropriate material.
The holder portion may comprise a cylindrical shank portion, and a grooved end portion which has a flat on one side.
The present invention also extends to a drill when including a drill bit according to any one of the preceding claims.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings ip which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dental drill bit of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view from a different side of the dental drill bit as shown in Figure 1 ;
Figure 3 is a side view of the dental drill bit as shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a top view of the dental drill bit as shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an end view of the dental drill bit as shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a dental drill bit 2 for use in dental implant surgery. The dental drill bit 2 comprises a first drilling formation 4, a second and larger drilling formation 6, and a holder portion 8 by which the dental drill bit 2 is held in a dental drill (not shown).
The first drilling formation 4 is axially located on an end 10 of the second drilling formation 6 furthest from the holder portion 8. The first drilling formation 3 is a triangle with cutting edges 12. The second drilling formation 6 has a plurality of cutting flutes 14. The first drilling formation 4 is such that it forms a tip to the second drilling formation 6. The first drilling formation 4 is also such that in use it drills a pilot hole for the second drilling formation 6, whilst at the same time facilitating the elimination of vibration and the prevention of slipping of the dental drill bit 2 when drilling into curved bone surfaces in the jaws of persons undergoing dental implant surgery.
As can be seen from the drawings, the first drilling formation 4 has a cutting diameter of approximately one fifth of the cutting diameter of the second drilling formation 6. The first drilling formation 4 has three triangular faces as shown. The second drilling formation has three of the cutting flutes 14.
The dental drill bit 2 includes a support portion 16 located between the second drilling formation 6 and the holder portion 8. The support portion 16 is for receiving an abutment collar (not shown) for limiting the depth of penetration of the dental drill bit 2.
As can best be seen from Figures 2, 3 and 4, the holder portion 8 comprises a cylindrical shank portion 18, and a grooved end portion 20 having a groove 22 and a flat 24 on one side.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the second drilling formation 6 may have four of the cutting flutes 14 instead of the illustrated three cutting flutes 14. As shown in Figure 4, the leading edge of the second drilling formation 6 is at an angle of 10°. Other suitable and appropriate angles may be employed. The dental drill bit 2 may be used on other bone structures, for example in maxillofacial prosthesis.
