Abstract

The invention relates to a method for carrying out the expansion of overpressure gases or vapour in an energy-efficient manner in order to convert the pressure energy into mechanical effort even when the gases or vapour is or are at a low initial pressure, and to a device for carrying out said method. The invention uses expansion sub-assemblies with favourable flow ratios and low inner expansion for said conversion, preferably in the form of piston expanders. Sub-assemblies of this type achieve excellent machine efficiency under the aforementioned operating conditions. If the expansion ratios exceed the preferred application ranges of the expansion sub-assemblies, the expansion can be advantageously carried out in two successive sub-assemblies.
