Definitions
- Today terminals can make use of a great number of communication and networking services implemented in a network.
- An example of such a service is call forwarding.
- This service enables redirection of a caller terminal such as a mobile phone, a wireless terminal, a laptop, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) capable telephone, to backup alternatives if a called terminal cannot be reached.
- the called terminal can configure the service by e.g. defining rules to forward or redirect an incoming call to e.g. a voice mail box or to a voice recorder etc.
- Call forwarding typically requires network-side implementation of application logic.
- EP 1492 318 describes an example of network-side implementation in terms of a communication exchanger which memorizes a presence state table for all users and a forwarding destination table for each of the users.
- the presence state table presence information of all users is registered.
- the forwarding destination table forwarding destination information classified by each presence of the user is registered.
- the exchange retrieves the presence information of the corresponding user from the presence state table.
- the exchanger also retrieves the forwarding destination information according to the presence information from the table to forward the call.
- a drawback with the solution provided in the above prior art document is, that it necessitates a network-side implementation of the communication exchanger which is usually handled by the operator of the network.
- the size of the presence information also scales with the number of users registered in the exchanger.
- the above stated problem is solved by means of a method for enabling a first terminal to reach another terminal.
- the method aimed to be performed by the first terminal comprises: subscribing to receive presence information of the second terminal, from an information server associated with the second terminal; receiving from the information server, a presence information update.
- the updated information indicating an information published by the second terminal in the information server.
- the method further comprises, initiating a call towards the second terminal and retrying the call towards an address indicated in the information published by the second terminal, upon failure to reach a user of the second terminal.
- Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating an exemplary communications system wherein the different exemplary embodiments of the presence invention can be implemented.
- FIG. 2 illustrates signalling messages according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- Figure 3 illustrates a flowchart of a method according to exemplary embodiments of the present invention.
- the voice mail server 150 can be anything that a call can be legitimately referred to, such as an IVR box (interactive voice response); a colleague, a corporate switch board and so on. It should also be noted that the voice mail server 150 does not necessarily belong to the operator of the network and/or the operator of the registrar and/or the operator of the presence server. Note also that the communication system 100 depicted in figure 1 may include other components such as proxy servers, redirect servers etc.. which are not considered relevant for the present invention. Referring to figure 2 there is illustrated signalling messages which, according to an embodiment of the present invention, are used for enabling a first terminal 210, denoted here UEA, to reach another terminal 220 denoted here UEB.
- UEA first terminal 210
- UEB another terminal 220
- a REGISTER request message is sent to SIP registrar SRA 211.
- the REGISTER message includes the identification of the user agent in UEA 210; the address (usually an IP address) of user agent client of UEA 210; the lifetime registration of the registration and additional parameter specific to processing the request.
- UEA 210 then waits for a confirmation from SRA 211 in the form of a OK message 200.
- a subscription message denoted SUBSCRIBE message is sent to SRB 221 via SRA 211.
- UEB 220 In order for terminal UEB 220 to allow terminal UEA 210 to receive presence information, UEB 220 also needs to register in SRB 221 by sending a REGISTER message to SRB 221. UEB 220 then receives a confirmation message (OK message) from SRB 221. Whenever the presence information status of UEB 220 changes, the publishing user which in this case is the user of UEB 220, may inform/provide the information server i.e. the presence server PSB 222 with a presence information update indicating where to forward a incoming call.
- This information can be provided by the user of UEB through a variety of means such as for example a PC based web browser, instant messaging, short message service (SMS), multimedia message (MMS) or any other suitable means.
- the presence information may for example indicate the address of the voice mail box VMB 223 wherein UEB 220 has registered a message.
- the published information (PUBLISH) that is provided to the information server, acting as a PSB 222, thus indicates alternative reachibility/availability address(s).
- UEA 210 when the user of UEA 210 initiates a call towards UEB 220, it first sends an INVITE message to UEB 220 via registrar SRA 211 and registrar 221. Upon failure to reach the user of UEB 220 i.e.
- the address relates to the address of the voice mail box 223.
- UEA 210 sends an INVITE message to the voice mail box 223 via SRA 211 and SRB 221.
- the voice mail box 223 replies to UEA 210 by sending a OK message followed by UEA 210 completing the initiation sequence with an acknowledgment message (ACK message).
- ACK message acknowledgment message
- UEA 210 can place/leave a message in the voice mail box 223 associated with UEB 220.
- the procedure is then terminated by the UEA 210 sending a BYE message and the voice mail box 223 responding with a OK message 200.
- the present invention reduces the load of the network to a SIP registrar (or SIP registrars) and a presence server(s) since most of the procedures needed io enable a. calling party to reach a called party in case the called party publishes backup alternatives, can be implemented in the end-users.
- SIP registrars; and presence server? s can be implemented as a distributed database using for example peer-lo-peer technology.
- one embodiment of the present invention includes a computer-readable medium having a computer program with instructions stored thereon that are executable by a terminal e.g. a user equipment of a telecommunications system.
- the instructions executable by the terminal and stored on a computer-readable medium perform the method steps of the present invention as set forth in the claims.
- the computer program can, according to the present invention, e.g. be implemented on top of or together with existing SIP application program interface's (API) as downloadable client(s) such as JavaME clients.
- API application program interface's
- the present invention and its different exemplary embodiments can be implemented in any terminal such as mobile phones, wireless terminals, laptops, personal computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), voice over internet protocol (VoIP) capable telephones etc.
- PDA personal digital assistants
- VoIP voice over internet protocol
