Description

A VALVE UNIT WITH A LEVEL INDICATOR FOR CONTAINERS, IN PARTICULAR CONTAINERS FOR LIQUEFIED GASES Technical field
The present invention relates to a valve unit with a level indicator for containers, in particular containers for compressed liquefied gases. Technological background
These containers, also known as cylinders, are widely used when no connection to the mains supply of fuel gas is available.
It is useful for users to know the level of the liquid remaining in the container so that they are not caught unawares when the fuel runs out. To that end, it is known to equip these containers with valve units provided with level indicators and/or devices warning that the cylinder is empty which make it possible to monitor the gas consumption so that the cylinder can be promptly replaced when it runs out. A typical example of this technology is disclosed in document IT-
1198140. The valve unit is of the type with a floating indicator which, by means of a rod, controls the displacement of a primary magnet adapted to actuate the moving assembly of the indicator by magnetic coupling. The technical solution makes it necessary to enlarge the valve body so that separate passages can be provided for the floating indicator rod and for the gas. This enlargement may interfere adversely with the take-up arms of automatic filling plant for cylinders, causing losses of gas, filling problems and other undesirable drawbacks.
A further example of this technology is disclosed in Italian Patent Application PD2006A000079 in the name of the Applicants. In this solution, the rod is provided coaxially in the gas passage thereby limiting the bulk of the valve body. In this case, however, the solution described comprises a relatively complex indicator which may potentially provide information correlated with the positioning of the wheel opening the shutter of the valve unit.
Description of the invention
The main object of the invention is to provide a valve unit with a level indicator for containers, in particular containers for compressed liquefied gases, which is structurally and functionally designed to remedy the drawbacks described above with reference to the cited prior art.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve unit of simple and functional structure, in which the level of the fuel may be read in a practical way and, where necessary or useful, using two different methods of indication. Brief description of the drawings
The features and advantages of the invention will become clear from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given purely by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the appended drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a view in axial section of a valve unit of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial view in lateral elevation of the unit of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an overall diagrammatic view of the unit of the preceding Figures, seen from the opposite side with respect to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view in frontal elevation of the unit of the preceding Figures;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, with parts removed, of the unit of the preceding Figures.
Preferred embodiment of the invention In the drawings, a valve unit of the invention is shown overall by 1.
The unit 1 is of the tap type and is adapted to be applied to a container (cylinder B shown only partially) for compressed liquefied gases. The unit 1 comprises a valve body 2 of amagnetic material bearing a threaded spigot 3 by means of which it is screwed in a leak-tight manner into a threaded hole 4 of the cylinder B.
The valve body 2, as regards those parts which are to be coupled with existing automatic filling stations, is of standard type, i.e. it has outer dimensions and an outer geometry similar to those of similar known valve bodies, albeit without level indicators. The valve body 2 and the spigot 3 are provided with a substantially axial passage 2a acting both as a gas duct, for the filling of and supply from the gas cylinder, and as a passage for a control rod 5 of a floating actuator 6 belonging to the unit 1 and normally contained in the cylinder B.
The rod 5 may slide in a tubular guide 7 held in the spigot 3 by a retaining member δ.The float 9 of the actuator 6 is hinged on a support 9a which is in turn secured to an end of the guide 7 opposite the member 8.
A piston shutter 10 with a wheel control 11 may be displaced axially in the valve body 2 to and from a valve seat 12 in order selectively to intercept the gas duct 2a between the passage extending through the spigot 3 and a supply/filling mouth 13 to which the gas consumer unit is normally connected. The wheel 11 is integrated with the piston shutter 10.
A safety valve 14 of conventional construction is disposed in a tubular projection extending from the valve body 2 on the side diametrically opposite the mouth 13. The valve 14 is disposed upstream of the valve seat 12 in order to protect the cylinder from any overpressure.
The piston shutter 10 is displaced axially during the operational control to open and intercept the valve seat 12 by means of a screw and bolt connection 15 of its collar 15a within a sleeve portion of the valve body 2 and is provided with a blind axial cavity 16, in which a primary permanent magnet 17 in contact with the free end of the rod 5 is guided in a sliding manner so that the position of the magnet along the cavity 16 is representative of the level of fluid remaining in the cylinder B.
The axial cavity of the piston is closed in a leak-tight manner with respect to the gas duct by mean of a gasket 18 through which the rod 5 passes.
The unit 1 further comprises a level indicator 20 including a housing 21 in which a moving assembly 22 with a secondary magnet 23 subject to the magnetic field of the primary magnet 17 is hinged along an axis substantially transverse to the axis of the valve body 2. The level indicator 20 is preferably secured in a detachable manner to the valve body 2 by means of two arms 24 which partially encompass the body 2 in the vicinity of the mouth 13. In this way, the indicator 20 may be removed from the cylinder when it is being prepared for filling, thereby limiting any possibility of damage to the indicator. The user may also keep the indicator and fit it onto a new full cylinder which is installed to replace an empty cylinder. As an alternative, the indicator 20 may be secured to the valve body, for instance by means of a screw 25 disposed on one of the arms 24.
It will be appreciated that in all cases the moving assembly 22 is secured to the valve body independently from the piston shutter so that the movement of the latter does not influence the information supplied by the moving assembly.
This moving assembly in turn comprises a drum indicator 26 bearing the secondary . magnet 23 in an eccentric position and partially visible through a port 27 of the housing 21. By means of a different colouring of the jacket of the drum 26 it is possible to give an overall indication of the level of fluid in the cylinder B. The wheel indicator also bears, at an axial end, a needle 28 which indicates the level of fluid in the cylinder B in an accurate matter on a dial 29.
These features mean that the present invention makes it possible to obtain a valve having, as regards those parts involved in operations to fill the cylinder, the same geometry as versions without a level indicator. This makes it possible to carry out the operations to fill the cylinders with existing standard equipment. The main object proposed is achieved in this way and entails a number of advantages including: - an adequate section is maintained for the passage of gas through the valve unit so as to avoid any lengthening of filling times; the legibility of the indication of the remaining fluid level in the container is improved for any user; the reliability and efficiency of the valve is ensured by separating the internal parts in contact with the gas from the external parts adapted solely to display the level; the legibility of the level indicator remains the same whether the tap is closed or open.
