Definitions

  • This invention relates to a tan through material, and also an article of clothing made of such material.
  • Tan through material allows light to penetrate therethrough to a significant degree, and therefore for sunlight to pass therethrough tanning a person. Tan through materials are popular in clothing where a person desires to obtain an overall suntan but cannot or does not wish to be naked.
  • a tan through material the material being made of polybutylene terephthalate, and being knitted such that in a first direction the material can be stretched to a significantly greater degree than in a second perpendicular direction, the material being in the form of an open mesh with openings which in a relaxed condition are significantly bigger in the second direction than in the first.
  • the openings in the relaxed condition may be between 0.1 and 0.5 millimetres in the first direction, and between 0.4 and 1.5 millimetres in the second direction.
  • the material may be substantially 100% polybutylene terephthalate.
  • the material may be arranged such that when fully stretched the openings are at least generally equisize in both the first second directions.
  • the openings in the material may be substantially diamond shaped, with the first and second directions extending respectively between opposite apices of the diamond.
  • the openings may be rectangular or oval.
  • the material may have a mass per unit area of 100-200 grams per square metre.
  • the material can preferably be stretched up to about a 25% size increase in the second direction, and a substantially 100% size increase in the first direction.
  • the invention also provides an article of clothing, the clothing being made of a material according to any of the preceding seven paragraphs.
  • the article of clothing may be an item of swimwear.
  • the article of clothing may be decorated with a contrasting pattern.
  • the pattern may be applied by transfer printing.
  • the article of clothing may be arranged such that the first direction extends around a wearer of the clothing, with the second direction extending substantially up and down the wearer.
  • Fig 1 is a diagrammatic view of material according to the invention in a relaxed condition
  • Fig 2 is a similar view to fig 1 but with the material in a fully stretched condition.
  • the drawings show a tan through material 10 according to the invention.
  • the material 10 is formed by knitting polybutylene terephthalate in a pattern to provide in a relaxed condition an open mesh with diamond shape openings 12 as shown in fig 1.
  • the openings 12 in a relaxed condition are significantly longer in a vertical direction as shown in the drawings than in a horizontal direction.
  • the openings 12 may be 0.7mm tall and 0.2mm wide.
  • the openings 12 become substantially as wide as they are tall, and the openings 12 may become substantially 1.5mm wide between opposite apices in either direction. This means that the material 10 stretches to a significantly greater degree in a horizontal direction as shown in the drawings.
  • the invention also provides an article of clothing which may be an item of swimwear such as a pair of swimming trunks or a ladies swimming costume.
  • This is formed of the material 10 with the material orientated as shown in the drawings. This means that the material 10 provides additional stretching in a direction around the wearer where stretching is usually required to fit for example around the wearer's waist or buttocks.
  • the article of clothing is decorated in a highly contrasting pattern. This pattern even when wet provides substantial opacity to avoid any embarrassment to a wearer.
  • the pattern may be applied by transfer printing ink which provides a colourfast pattern in the polybutylene terephthalate material. This printing technique means that relatively small transfer production runs can readily be achieved, enabling a wide selection of different patterns to be used.
  • Clothing made with this material has been found to allow up to 80% of UV light to pass through the mesh like construction, thereby providing for significant tanning.
  • the use of this material and decoration technique has been found to provide items of clothing which are not affected by salt water or chlorine.
  • the amount of stretch permitted in a vertical direction as shown in the drawings is about 20-25%, much of which is provided by extension of the actual material. In a horizontal direction as shown, an extension of about 100% is achieved, mainly due to increase of the mesh opening size.
  • the material could be used to make different items of clothing. .
  • the material may be differently knitted.
  • the material may have different shaped openings, which openings could be oval or rectangular.
