Abstract

A number of studies have been performed that demonstrate beneficial effects of perineal dilation and/or massage during pregnancy to reduce episiotomy and perineal trauma at birth. The invention includes a perineal massage device including a retractor portion attached to the unified end of a bifurcated handle. The device can be held anteriorly or posteriorly by the user. The device facilitates perineal massage during the last portion of pregnancy when the enlarged abdomen restricts easy access by the woman to her vagina. The invention further includes methods of use of the device of the invention.
