Description
APPARATUS FOR SHOWING MOVING IMAGES IN A FLOOR
This invention relates to apparatus for showing images in a floor and, more especially, this invention relates to apparatus for showing moving images in a floor. The floor may be inside a building or outside a building.
Apparatus for showing images in a floor such for example as a pavement or a floor of a shopping mall is known. Such apparatus is able to be used for a wide variety of purposes including advertising and/or marketing and/or health and safety purposes.
WO 2005/114623 discloses apparatus for showing images in a floor, which apparatus comprises a housing for being mounted in the floor, a panel which is positioned at an upper part of the housing which is able to be walked on, a screen which is positioned beneath the panel, cooling means for cooling the screen during use of the apparatus, and vent means for enabling air to circulate through the housing. The apparatus of WO 2005/114623 is one in which the images are moving images, the moving images are generated on a screen, and the panel is a transparent panel whereby the moving images on the screen are able to be seen through the panel. The apparatus disclosed in WO 2005/114623 is such that drainage means is employed for draining liquid entering the housing 4. The drainage means includes a pump for pumping the liquid out of the housing.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate the need for the drainage means.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for showing images in a floor, which apparatus comprises a housing for being mounted in the floor, a panel which is positioned at an upper part of the housing and which is able to be walked on, a screen which is positioned beneath the panel, cooling means for cooling the screen during use of the apparatus, and vent means for enabling air to circulate through the housing, the apparatus being such that the images are moving images, the screen is one on which the moving images are generated, the panel is a transparent panel whereby the moving images on the screen are able to be seen through the panel, and the cooling means is a fan cooling means, and the apparatus being characterised in that the vent means and the fan cooling means are located in an installation which is spaced apart from the housing and which is connected to the housing by conduit means.
With the apparatus of the present invention, the provision of the vent means and the fan cooling means in the installation which is spaced apart from the housing, enables the housing not to have the vent means. This in turn enables the housing to be sealed if required so that liquid cannot enter the housing, for example through the vent means or elsewhere. The installation containing the vent means and the fan cooling means can be located indoors whilst the remainder of the apparatus can be located indoors or outdoors as may be required and without concern for the housing needing
drainage means for draining liquid entering the housing. The installation can be positioned outdoors if required, and in this case the installation may be protected from rain or other liquids likely to come in contact with the installation, for example during washing of floors in shopping malls.
The apparatus may be one in which the installation comprises a cabinet, and in which the vent means comprises at least one aperture in the cabinet.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the fan cooling means operates to push air into the housing, and to pull air out of the housing.
The fan cooling means may comprise a push fan for pushing the air into the housing, and a pull fan for pulling the air out of the housing. The cabinet may be divided into first and second compartments by a sealing divider, and then the push fan may be located in the first compartment, and the pull fan may be located in the second compartment.
The conduit means may comprise a first pipe for connecting the first compartment to the housing, and a second pipe for connecting the second compartment to the housing.
Preferably, the cabinet is in the form of an upstanding pillar. Other types of cabinet may however be employed.
The installation may include a power supply device.
The installation may include an image converter device, for example a video converter.
The housing may be a sealed housing as indicated above. With such a sealed housing, there is no need for a pump in the housing to pump liquid
out of the housing. If the housing is to be installed indoors, then the housing may be sealed or not sealed as may be desired.
The housing preferably comprises an inner container positioned within an outer container. In this case, the conduit means may communicate with the outer container, and the inner container may have aperture means for allowing air from the outer container to enter into, and be removed from, the inner container.
The apparatus may be one in which the screen is a plasma screen, a liquid crystal display screen, a television screen, a light emitting diode screen, a laser-receiving screen, a projection television screen, a micro-projection television screen, or an organic light emitting diode screen. Other types of screen may be employed.
The panel may be a transparent reinforced glass panel. Other materials may be employed for the panel so that, for example, the panel may be made of a transparent plastics material. The transparent plastics material may be a clear polyacrylate material. Other transparent plastics materials may be employed.
Advantageously, the face of the panel that is able to be walked on is protected by a non-slip, non-scratch coating. The coating should be such that it does not impair the visibility of the moving images through the panel.
The apparatus may be one in which the housing has sides, a base and a top, and in which the panel is positioned in the top of the housing. The housing will usually be a rectilinear housing having four sides. The housing
will thus normally be rectangular or square in plan. The housing may be other shapes if desired.
The apparatus may include heating means for heating the screen at start-up conditions. This is because some screens will be such that they cannot be started up at low temperatures, for example as may occur if the apparatus of the present invention is installed outside in cold environments.
The heating means may be a heating fan. One or more of the heating fans may be employed. Other types of heating means may be employed.
When the heating means is a heating fan, then the heating fan may be part of a unit containing the cooling means, the apparatus then being one in which the unit has switch means for causing a heating element to operate and thereby enable the unit to operate as a heating fan, or for causing the heating element not to operate and thereby enabling the unit to operate as a cooling fan. Such an arrangement helps to avoid duplication of parts and thereby ensures that the apparatus of the present invention is able to be produced in a very cost-effective manner.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view, partially cut away, of apparatus for showing moving images in a floor; and
Figure 2 is a section through the apparatus shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown apparatus 2 for showing images in a floor. The apparatus 2 comprises a housing 4 for being mounted in the floor. A panel 6 is positioned in an upper part 8 of the housing 4. The
panel 6 is able to be walked on. A screen 10 is positioned beneath the panel 6.
The apparatus 2 has cooling means 12 for cooling the screen 10 during use of the apparatus 2. Vent means 14 are provided for enabling air to circulate through the housing 4.
The apparatus 2 is such that the images are moving images. The screen 10 is one on which the moving images are generated. The panel 6 is a transparent panel whereby the moving images on the screen 10 are able to be seen through the panel 6. The cooling means 12 is a fan cooling means 12.
The apparatus 2 is characterised in that the vent means 14 and the fan cooling means 12 are located in an installation 16 which is spaced apart from the housing 4 and which is connected to the housing 4 by conduit means 18.
The installation 16 comprises a cabinet 20. The vent means 14 comprises four apertures 22 in the cabinet 20.
The fan cooling means 12 operates to push air into the housing 4, and to pull air out of the housing 4. More specifically, the fan cooling means 12 comprises a push fan 24 for pushing air into the housing 4, and a pull fan 26 for pulling air out of the housing 4. The cabinet 20 is divided into a first compartment 28 and a second compartment 30 by a sealing divider 32. The push fan 24 is located in the first compartment 28. The pull fan 26 is located in the second compartment 30. The conduit means 18 comprises a first pipe 34 for connecting the first compartment 28 to the housing 4, and a second pipe 36 for connecting the second compartment 30 to the housing 4.
The cabinet 20 is in the form of an upstanding pillar. The installation 16 includes a power supply device 38 and an image converter device 40.
The housing 4 is a sealed housing. The housing 4 comprises an inner container 42 which is positioned within an outer container 44. The conduit means 18 communicates with the outer container 44. The inner container 42 has aperture means 46 for allowing air from the outer container 44 to enter into, and be removed from, the inner container 42.
The inner container 44 contains an image converter device 48. The image converter device is 40, 48 may be video converters. The housing 4 is closed by a lid 50.
A video cable 52 and a power cable 54 extend between the installation 16 and the housing 4 by passing through the first pipe 34 of the conduit means 18. The video cable 52 and the power cable 54 could alternatively be provided in the second pipe 36. They could also be provided externally of the conduit means 18.
The installation 16 may be spaced from the housing 4 by any suitable and appropriate distance, for example up to 100 metres.
The screen 10 may be a plasma screen, a liquid crystal display screen, a television screen, a light emitting diode screen, a laser-receiving screen, a projection television screen, a micro-projection television screen, or an organic light-emitting diode screen. The panel 6 is a transparent reinforced glass panel. The face of the panel 6 that is able to be walked on is protected by non-slip, non-scratch coating.
The housing 4 has sides, a base and a top. The panel 6 is positioned in the top of the housing 4. The housing 4 is a rectilinear housing having four sides.
The apparatus 2 is easily able to be installed. There is no need for the housing 4 to have pump means for pumping out water that may get into the housing 4. This is because the housing 4 can be installed indoors if desired where it will not be subject to receiving water. The housing 4 can also be installed outside if desired, in which case the housing 4 is able to be sealed. Any suitable and appropriate means may be employed for sealing the housing. The installation 16 can be installed indoors where there is no worry or concern about liquids getting into the housing 16. Alternatively, the installation 16 can be positioned outdoors but such that any water entering the installation 16 is easily able to drain away. Any liquid in the installation 16 is easily able to be drained away because the installation 16 is able to be positioned above ground, whereas the housing 4 is positioned in the ground where drainage away from the housing 4 is not so simple.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the apparatus 2 may be provided with heating means for heating the screen at start-up conditions.
