Abstract

An anti-back out fastener includes a head featuring a lower surface and a shaft connected to the lower surface. The shaft features a thread portion and a tip region including a.seif-dnlimg point forming the distal end of the shall. The head also features a driver portion and the lower surface has an undercut formed therein with a number of locking nubs and a washer positioned therein. The locking nubs are shaped to pass over the washer when the fastener is rotated hi a first direction and dig into the washer when an attempt is made to rotate the fastener in a second direction.

Description

ANIl-BACK OUT FASTENER
CLAIM OF PRIORITY
HM)OlJ This application claims priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61/007,236, filed December 1 1 , 2007, currently pending.
BACKGROUND
[0002] The present invention relates to fasteners for use in construction, ami more, particularly to fasteners that resist back out.
HMMB! In the building industry, and particularly in the metal building industry, self drilling., self tapping fasteners may back om of a building after installation. This occurs because, over ume, such fasteners can loosen and pull out of their originally fixed positions. This is a problem known as fastener back out, and, although not being bound by any particular theory, it is believed that this back out is caused by internal and/or external vibrations,

|O0O7 J Fig. 4 is mi bottom plan view of the fastener of Fig. I, wύh the head and washer deuύis shown in dashed lir.es. DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0008] While fasteners of the present invention are described below in terms of use for use with metal panels and purlins of the metal building industry, it is understood that the fastener could be used to secure other pieces together and with materials other than metal. Such materials include., but are not limited to. wood, plastic, concrete, and composite materials.
[00091 An embodiment of the fastener of (he present invention is indicated in general ai K in Figs. 1-4. As will be explained in greater detail, below, the fastener includes a screw having lock nibs and a washer.
[00103 A-s illustrated in Figs. 1-4, the screw aspect of the illustrated fastener 8 has two primary components, a head 10 and a shaft 12. As illustrated in Pig, 2, the shaft ϊl has two regions of varying diameter: the tip region 14 and the thread region 16. The tip region 14 forms the t«ρered distal end of the shaft. The tip region is preferably a self-drilling point for drilling a hole into a materia! as the screw is inserted therein. 'The thread region 16 is located along t.he shaft shove the tip region. The thread region has threads 17 thai grip the material into which the screw is inserted. The threads can be configured in any suitable manner known in the an, such as. for example, ars inverted buUress design.
[001 Il As illustrated in Fig. 3, the head 10 of the screw is preferably an indented head having a driver portion IS, a crown 20, and a lower surface 22. The driver portion of the head of the screw is preferably hexagonal. More preferably, the driver portion of the head is preferably a 5/16 inch hexagonal head having an indentation 24 on the upper surface thereof. It is believed thai the indentation facilitates improved engagement with a socket. It should be underwood, however, that other head types can also be employed, such as, for example, a square head, a Phillips head, or flat head, The crown extends around the perimeter of the head. The tower surface 22 of the head preferably has an undercut 25.
{0012} Lock nibs 26a-26d (Figs. 2-4) are formed in the head i0 of the fastener and are located under the crown 20 and preferably within the undercut 25 of the lower surface 22. A>- best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. the lock nibs 26a- 26d feature a generally triangular profile with one side having α shorter length and sleeper laper than the other, As a result, the lock nibs allow t.he fastener to turn clockwise over a washer 28 without resistance as the lock nib sides with (he more gradual taper (and greater length) pass or slide over the washer. The lock nibs, however, wiH dig into the washer if backed out or turned hi a counter-clockwise direction, as the skies of the lock nibs featuring a steeper taper engage the washer, thus resisting fastener back out While lock nibs featuring a generally triangular shape are shown, other shapes may be used, as long us die lock nibs feature the "one-way" action described immediately above.
100131 Preferably, (here are at least two lock nibs in the fastener. In such embodiments, the lock nibs are preferably located at a 9(F angle or a 180° angle with respect to each other In ihe embodiment of die fastener of the present invent ion illustrated in Figs, 1-4, there are four lock nibs located at a 90" angle with respect to each other,
[00.141 The core materia! of the screw >s preferably carbon steel. The driver portion of the head is preferably a cast zinc alloy. The shaft is preferably a sr.ine plated shaft having a thickness of at least about 0,005 inches.
((K)JS] The washer 28 is preferably rubber, such as, for example, EPDM. Use washer preferably has an upper portion that is entrapped within the undercut of the head of the screw,
{0016] When an ana-back out fastener of the present invention is inserted into a metal roof. sidewaJS or other piece, for example, the rubber washer 28 will bond to the metal of the roof or sidewall. Fasteners of the present invention were designed to utilize the adhesion of the washer to a nietai panel, and, in conjunction with the lock nibs, resist back oώ.
{0017] From the foregoing, il will be appreciated that although specific embodiments of the invention have been described herein for purposes of illustration, various modifications may be made without deviating from the spirit or scope of the invention, it is therefore intended that die foregoing detailed description be regarded as illustrative rather than limiting, and that n he understood that it is the following claims, including all equivalents, that are intended to particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter regarded as the invention.
