Description

Description
PREPAID BROADCASTING RECEIVER AND SUBSCRIBER
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND METHOD THEREOF IN
DIGITAL MULTIMEDIA BROADCASTING SERVICE
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method, system and CAS-based digital broadcasting receiver for rapidly processing EMMs (Entitlement Management Messages) needed for an initial broadcast reception in a receiver of a subscriber who is newly registered in a Condition Access System for digital broadcasting, without using a frequency band for broadcasting.
[2]
Background Art
[3] Nowadays, a digital broadcasting system employs a Condition Access System
(hereinafter, referred to as CAS) having confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability, authenticity and reliability, in order to protect broadcast contents.
[4] Packet information for the CAS is usually transferred through a Transport Layer, for example MPEG2 TS (Transport Stream), in which an EMM carrying personal information, view entitlement and modifier keys for a service program is transferred through a TS packet of 188 bytes if a subscriber is newly registered or changed, and an ECM (Entitlement Control Message) carrying event access and decoding information is periodically transferred through a TS packet of 188 bytes.
[5] A transmitting node of an MPEG system generates a Control Word (hereinafter, referred to as CW ) which functions to scramble broadcast data. The generated CW is used to scramble broadcast data. The generated CW is encrypted inside the ECM and transmitted to a receiving node. Meanwhile, a key, which is used to encrypt the CW, is included in the EMM and transmitted to the receiving node. Herein, the ECM and the EMM are transferred as an MPEG2 TS packet each having a different packet identifier (hereinafter, referred to as PID ). A value of the PID is the same as a value of a given PID as directed in a CA_PID field of a CA descriptor inside both a PMT (Program Map Table) and a CAT (Conditional Access Table) among PSI (Program Specific Information) tables prescribed in an MPEG2 system. Then, the receiving node first searches for a TS packet including a PAT table in a broadcast data stream, parses the PAT table, obtains a PID value of a PMT table for the corresponding broadcasting program, searches for a TS packet having that value and parses the PMT table, in order to view a specific, scrambled broadcasting program. By obtaining a PID value of the TS Packet including an ECM through parsing the PMT table and finding the TS packet with the ECM, the ECM is obtained. Also, in order to get the CW from the ECM, decryption of the ECM is needed. Therefore, through parsing the CAT table after receiving a TS packet including a CAT table, obtaining a PID of a TS packet including the EMM, and searching for the TS packet including the EMM, the EMM is obtained. Then, by obtaining a key for decrypting the ECM from the EMM and performing the decryption of the ECM using that key, a resultant CW is obtained. Subsequently, the obtained CW is transferred to a descrambler of the receiver, and thus the scrambled broadcast program is transformed into a viewable format.
[6] In an EMM for the CAS, the occurrence of a packet suddenly increases according to new registration requests and entitlement change requests of subscribers, and also in an ECM, packet occurrence relatively increases according to the period of transfer repetition. In particular, with portable DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) having narrow transmission bandwidth and lower resolution, message packets for a CAS are limited in resource allocation compared to only audio and video data packets. Packets of a message for a CAS are limited in resource allocation, in comparison with pure audio and video data packets.
[7] Also, with the new registration of a subscriber, a subscription EMM is broadcast after subscription, and particularly the EMM is usually transmitted every two minutes for one week for safe reception. The EMM contains a subscriber key, which is a unique key for each card managed in a CAS, group/position information determined at the time of registration in a CAS DB, a key for each group, package information, validity period, etc. A receiver of a new subscriber can receive a broadcast, only after it receives the EMM. That is, there exists a problem in that a newly registered subscriber cannot view a broadcast through his receiver until he receives the subscription EMM. In other words, a user experiences a subscription standby time.
[8]
Disclosure of Invention Technical Problem
[9] Accordingly, the present invention has been made to solve at least the above- mentioned problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide a prepaid broadcasting receiver including a subscription EMM storage unit for storing service subscription information among subscription EMMs, the service subscription information comprising information necessary for service subscription, the subscription EMMs comprising broadcast reception limitation information necessary for initial reception of a CAS-based digital broadcasting, wherein the prepaid broadcasting receiver receives the CAS-based digital broadcasting by using the service subscription information stored in advance in the subscription EMM storage unit. A further object of the present invention is to provide a method of processing prepaid subscriber information by using a prepaid broadcasting receiver comprising a subscription EMM storage unit storing the service subscription information, the method comprising the steps of: (a) generating a subscription signal containing purchase information on the prepaid broadcasting receiver of the subscriber and transmitting to the subscription EMM storage unit or the prepaid broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit by a subscription center server; and (b) receiving the subscription signal, and then providing CAS-based digital broadcasting service for the prepaid broadcasting receiver by the CAS broadcasting server.

[39]
Mode for the Invention
[40] Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[41] FIG. 1 is a diagram showing the procedure of inputting service subscription information to a subscription EMM storage unit in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[42] Referring to FIG. 1, a subscription processing system 200 stores subscription EMM information in a subscription EMM storage unit 100. The subscription EMM in- formation is transmitted from a CAS broadcasting server 300 to the subscription processing system 200. The subscription processing system 200 generates service subscription information necessary for service subscription from the subscription EMM information and stores the same in the subscription EMM storage unit 100. Therefore, the storage unit 100 stores the service subscription information. The subscription EMM storage unit 100 includes a portable card or chip, such as a SIM (subscriber identification module) card or a SMD (surface mounted device) card, etc. The subscription EMM storage unit 110 storing the service subscription information can be equipped with a broadcasting receiver 130 in advance so that a subscriber pays a subscription fee and purchases the broadcasting receiver 130, or a subscriber purchases only a subscription EMM storage unit 110 and then mounts it on a broadcasting receiver for immediate reception of a broadcast. Therefore, the subscriber can view the broadcast immediately as the broadcasting receiver 130 does not need to receive a separate subscription EMM necessary for an initial broadcast reception.
[43] Herein, a CAS-based broadcast refers to a digital broadcast or a mobile broadcasting served on a mobile network. For detailed description thereof, a DMB -based digital broadcast is, hereinafter, described as one example.
[44] Broadcast reception limitation information needed for initial reception of a CAS- based digital broadcast includes a unique key, that is a subscriber key, for an individual card, a key for an individual group, viewable channel information and viewable period information. However, for a broadcast receiver having a storage unit which stores the first subscription EMM information excepting the viewable channel information and the viewable period information, broadcast reception is available only after a broadcast receiver receives the second subscription EMM information, such as the viewable channel information and the viewable period information, separately at the time of subscription.
[45] Hereinafter, an embodiment of a DMB prepaid subscriber management system according to the present invention will be described. That is, a subscription processing system inputs service subscription information to a subscription EMM storage unit 110 or a broadcast receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110 as mentioned above. Thereafter, a new subscriber purchases the subscription EMM storage unit 110 or the broadcast receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110 and newly subscribes to a CAS-based digital broadcasting service. Herein, a subscription center 400 instructs a CAS broadcasting server 300 to process the subscription, then the CAS broadcasting server 300 receives the subscription signal and provides the CAS-based digital broadcasting service for the broadcast receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110.
[46] FIG. 2 is a diagram showing in detail the procedure of inputting service subscription information to a subscription EMM storage unit as shown in FIG. 1.
[47] Referring to FIG. 2, if a DMB prepaid subscriber management system operates the subscription EMM storage unit 100 through an issue -related PerSAM 410, the subscription EMM storage unit 100 is constructed as a subscription EMM storage unit 120 issuance completed through a CAS issuing system 210 without having service subscription information stored.
[48] The issuance completed subscription EMM storage unit 120 can be distributed as a subscription EMM storage unit 120 itself or a broadcast receiver 130 having a subscription EMM storage unit 120 as described above. Then, a new subscriber purchases the distributed subscription EMM storage unit 120 itself or a broadcast receiver 130 having a subscription EMM storage unit 120. The subscriber should receive a subscription EMM through a CAS subscription system 220 and a CAS broadcasting server 300 and perform a separate procedure for subscription-processing to subscribe to a CAS-based digital broadcasting service for service running.
[49] On the other hand, if a DMB prepaid subscriber management system operates the subscription EMM storage unit 100 through a subscription Persam 420, the subscription EMM storage unit 100 is constructed as a subscription EMM storage unit 110 which stores service subscription information through a CAS subscription system 220, and which is subscription-processed.
[50] Therefore, the broadcast receiver 130 is equipped with the subscription processed subscription EMM storage unit 110, and can receive a CAS-based digital broadcast through a CAS subscription authentication procedure.
[51] Furthermore, the subscription EMM storage unit 100 does not keep an EMM itself but service subscription information included in the EMM necessary for service subscription. That is, the subscription EMM storage unit 100 keeps some information transferred together with the service subscription information as newly subscribed to the broadcast service. The CAS subscription system 200 performs the procedure of receiving the subscription EMM from a CAS broadcasting server 300 and storing the corresponding service subscription information in the subscription EMM storage unit 100. In this procedure, all information on the subscription EMM to be transferred as newly subscribed to the broadcast service can be stored or some of the information is only stored, according to the service provider s policies.
[52] For example, some information related to group information, KEY information, etc. is transmitted to the subscription EMM storage unit 100, but subscription package information is transferred on a broadcasting network as a subscriber purchases a broadcasting terminal. Also, a CAS broadcasting server 300 transmits a subscription EMM to a CAS subscription system 220, and particularly, it is possible to transmit the subscription EMM by the standards defined to guarantee security. [53] FIG. 3 is a diagram showing the procedure of activating a broadcasting receiver having a subscription EMM storage unit as shown in FIG 1.
[54] Referring to FIG. 3, when a subscriber purchases a subscription EMM storage unit
110 storing, in advance, service subscription information among subscription EMMs, the service subscription information comprising at least one piece of information necessary for service subscription, the subscription EMMs comprising broadcast reception limitation information necessary for initial reception of a CAS-based digital broadcasting, or the prepaid subscriber broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110, the subscriber performs terminal registration and an opening request to the subscription center server 400 to initiate broadcasting service through a subscription EMM storage unit 110 or the prepaid subscriber broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110.
[55] Subsequently, the subscription center server 400 generates purchase authentication information including information on whether the subscription EMM storage unit 110 or the prepaid broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110 is purchased, and then transmits it to the subscription EMM storage unit 110 or the prepaid broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110. Then, the prepaid broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110 switches into an active mode for receiving the CAS-based digital broadcasting service based on the purchase authentication information in order to initiate the corresponding broadcasting service.
[56] Herein, the subscription center server 400 determines the service subscription information which is stored, in advance, in the subscription EMM storage unit 110. If the subscription EMM storage unit 110 does not include the whole information necessary for initiating the CAS-based digital broadcast, then the subscription center server 400 receives the required additional information by interworking with the CAS broadcasting server 300 and inputs the received information into the subscription E MM storage unit 110.
[57] Also, the subscription center server 400 is configured to generate a subscription code for the purchase authentication information and inform the subscriber of it, thereby allowing the subscriber to input the subscription code into the subscription EMM storage unit 110 or the prepaid broadcasting receiver 130 having the subscription EMM storage unit 110. Therefore, the EMM storage unit 110 or the prepaid broadcasting receiver having that storage unit 130 switches into an active mode for receiving the CAS-based digital broadcasting service.
[58] FIG. 4 is a flow chart showing the procedure including the steps of storing service subscription information in a subscription EMM storage unit 100 as shown in FIG. 1 through activating a broadcasting receiver 130 having a subscription EMM storage unit [59] Referring to FIG. 4, a broadcast prepaid subscriber management method according to the present invention is described. First, a subscription processing system requests a CAS broadcasting server to process prepaid subscription in step 100. In response to the request, the CAS broadcasting server generates broadcast reception limitation information containing a prepaid viewing channel frequency range and viewing period related settings in step 102. Then, the CAS broadcasting server transmits a subscription EMM containing CAS subscription authentication information and broadcasts reception limitation information to the subscription processing system in step 104.
[60] Next, the subscription processing system generates service subscription information based on the information transmitted from the CAS broadcasting server, and inputs the generated service subscription information into the subscription EMM storage unit in step 106 through 110.
[61] Then, a broadcast subscriber makes a purchase of the subscription EMM storage unit or the broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit, and requests the subscription center server to provide the corresponding broadcasting service using the broadcasting receiver.
[62] In response to the request, the subscription center server generates purchase authentication information corresponding to the purchase of the subscription EMM storage unit or the broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit, and transmits it to the subscription EMM storage unit or the broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit. Therefore, the broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit switches into an active mode for receiving a broadcast in step 112 through 116.
[63] Then, the broadcasting receiver having the subscription EMM storage unit initiates the corresponding broadcast service through the active mode in step 118.
[64] Although preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
