Abstract

This invention provides a body hygiene device, particularly for cleaning body piercings. The device includes a guide shaft, defining a leading end and a trailing end, and an absorbent filament secured at an end thereof to the trailing end of the shaft. In order to use the body hygiene device, the leading end of the guide shaft is inserted into a body piercing and pushed through the piercing. The filament is then threaded through the piercing, absorbing and/or mechanically removing dirt which may be present in the piercing. The filament typically is woven and defines a series of longitudinally spaced corrugations for entrapping dirt between them. The invention extends also to a body hygiene package including such devices and packaging in which they are packaged, typically in sterile fashion. The package may include instructions that each device is for single use.

Description

A BODY HYGIENE DEVICE
THIS INVENTION relates to a body hygiene device. The invention relates, more particularly, to a device for cleaning a body piercing.
The Applicant is aware that dirt sometimes accumulates in body piercings and may cause infections. Infection may also cause pus to form in a piercing. It is an aim of the present invention to provide a device for removal of such dirt or pus or both. Where the context thus permits, a reference herein to dirt must be interpreted broadly to include any undesirable matter in a piercing, including pus.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a body hygiene device including: a guide shaft, defining a leading end and a trailing end; and an absorbent filament secured at an end thereof to the trailing end of the shaft.
In order to use the body hygiene device, the leading end of the guide shaft is inserted into a body piercing and pushed through the piercing. The filament is then threaded through the piercing, absorbing and/or mechanically removing dirt which may be present in the piercing.
The filament may be woven. It may define a series of longitudinally spaced corrugations, serving operatively to entrap dirt between them during threading of the filament through a piercing.
The shaft may be made of synthetic plastics.
The end of the filament may be encapsulated in the trailing end of the shaft.
The dimensions of the body hygiene device of the invention may vary widely. The Applicant envisages that dimensions will typically fall within the following ranges: The shaft may have a diameter of between 0.3mm and 2.0mm and a length of between 10mm and 50mm.
The filament may have a diameter of between 0.5mm and 3.0mm and a length of between 30mm and 150mm.
The leading end of the shaft may be configured to facilitate insertion into and passage through a piercing. It may define a rounded tip.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a body hygiene package including: at least one body hygiene device, in accordance with the invention; and packaging in which the at least one body hygiene device is packaged.
The package may include directions for use of the at least one body hygiene device for cleaning a body piercing. The instructions may, e.g., be printed on the packaging. The Applicant envisages that the or each body hygiene device, as the case may be, will typically be provided as a disposable device. The directions may therefore include a direction to use the or each device once only.
The at least one body hygiene device may be a plurality of body hygiene devices.
The Applicant envisages that the body hygiene device of the invention will provide a convenient, disposable means for cleaning body piercings and thus aiding personal hygiene.
The invention is described below by way of a non-limiting example of a body hygiene device, in accordance with the invention, and to a body hygiene package, in accordance with the invention, including a plurality of such devices, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic side view of an embodiment of a body hygiene device, in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 shows a diagrammatic face-on view of an embodiment of a body hygiene package including a plurality of body hygiene devices, identical to that of Figure 1 , and packaging within which they are packaged.
In Figure 1 , an embodiment of a body hygiene device, in accordance with the invention, is designated generally by the reference numeral 10.
The device 10 includes a guide shaft 12 and an absorbent woven filament 14. The device 10 is intended for single use, i.e. for cleaning one piercing. The device 10 is thus disposable.
The guide shaft 12 is made of injection moulded synthetic plastics, e.g. PVC. In alternative embodiments of the body hygiene device of the invention, the guide shaft may be made of any other suitable material.
The guide shaft 12 has a diameter of about 1 mm and a length of about 20 mm. In other embodiments, the diameter may be anywhere between 0.3mm and 2.0mm and the length may be anywhere between 10mm and 50mm.
The guide shaft 12 defines a leading end, defining a rounded tip 16, and a trailing end 18.
An end 20 of the filament 14 is encapsulated in the end 18 of the shaft 12 and is secured thereto. It may be thus secured by any suitable means, e.g. by having the end 18 of the shaft 12 injection moulded onto it or by means of a suitable adhesive.
The filament 14 may be made from a single material, e.g. woven nylon strands similar to those use to make certain types of dental floss, or may be a blend of different materials. In this example, it is a woven blend of nylon strands and cotton wool. It is desirable that the filament 14 is absorbent so that it can absorb any moist dirt in a piercing. The filament 14 particularly is woven to define a series of longitudinally spaced corrugations or ribs 22.
The filament 14 has a diameter of about 1 .2 mm and a length of about 100 mm. In other embodiments, the diameter may be anywhere between 0.5mm and 3.0mm and the length may be anywhere between 30mm and 150mm.
In order to use the device 10, the tip 16 of the shaft 12 is inserted into a body piercing and pushed through the piercing. The filament 14 is then threaded through the piercing, absorbing and/or mechanically removing dirt which may be present in the piercing. The ribs 22 serve to entrap such dirt between them.
In Figure 2, reference numeral 24 refers to a body hygiene package, in accordance with the invention, including a plurality of, in this case ten, body hygiene devices 26, each identical to the device 10 of Figure 1 , and packaging in the form of a plastics bag 28. The devices 26 are hermetically sealed in the bag 28 in a sterile fashion. The bag 28 has an outwardly visible region 30 on which printed directions for use are printed. The directions include a direction to use each device 26 only once.
