Abstract

A skateboard (15; 15') comprising illumination means (10; 10') comprising an illumination means or rear brake light (10;10'), which illuminates when the skateboard (15;15') is in a braking disposition. The illumination means (10;10') are provided on a rear portion of a board (30;30'), and comprise an elongate member (11; 11'). In a braking position the board (30; 30') is disposed at an angle from the ground such that a rear portion of the board (30;30') is tilted downwards towards or is in contact with the ground.

Description

IMPROVED SKATEBOARD
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to an improved skateboard or similar type self or foot -propelled vehicle or transport means. The invention particularly, though not exclusively, relates to a skateboard or other self or foot -propelled vehicle incorporating a novelty illumination or lighting effect.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
Skateboards have enjoyed high popularity since they were first mass-produced in the 1960s at least in part because of their use not only for recreational purposes and as a sport, but also as a fast and convenient means of transportation.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide an improved skateboard or the like. It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to obviate and/or mitigate one or more disadvantages in the prior art .
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a skateboard or the like having a novel or novelty light effect. By such provision, the skateboard or the like may be, or may become, more desirable to ' a user, and/or assist in making the user and his/her intentions (e.g. braking) more visible to others. This may contribute to improved safety for the user and for others. SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard comprising illumination means. Preferably the self or foot-propelled vehicle is a skateboard.
Preferably the illumination means comprises a rear brake light.
Preferably the illumination means illuminate when the self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard is in a braking disposition, e.g. tilted up at a front portion and/or down at a rear portion.
The illumination means may comprise flashing means or intermittent illumination means. The skateboard may comprise a board or board portion or member.
Preferably the board is a wooden board.
The skateboard may comprise at least a pair of front wheels or rolling means, e.g. disposed in transverse relation to one another, and at least a pair of rear wheels or rolling means, e.g. disposed in transverse relation to one another.
The pair of front wheels may be connected to a front truck. The front truck may be connected to the board via a front baseplate. A spacer box, casing or riser may be provided between the front baseplate and the board.
The pair of rear wheels may be connected to a rear truck. The rear truck may be connected to the board via a rear baseplate. A switch means, e.g. provided within a switch box or casing or associated with another spacer box, casing or riser, may be provided, e.g. between the rear baseplate and the board. In use, the switch means may be operated or caused to be operated so as to cause the illumination means to illuminate or switch on.
The truck (s) and/or baseplate (s) may be made from a metallic material, e.g. aluminium or aluminium alloy.
Preferably at least a rear portion of the skateboard, e.g. the board, is provided with the illumination means. The rear portion may be provided rearward of the rear wheels or rolling means. The illumination means may be elongate. The illumination means may comprise at least one elongate member, rod or strap.
The elongate member may include, e.g. embedded therewithin, a plurality of illumination elements. Preferably the illumination means may comprise one illumination or lighting member, or alternatively a plurality of illumination or lighting members, e.g. spaced from one another.
The lighting member (s) may be provided along, around or adjacent an edge of at least part of a rear portion of the board.
The lighting member (s) may be provided, preferably wholly or alternatively at least partly, rearward of the rear wheels. Beneficially the lighting member (s) may be at least partly provided on, or visible alongside, an at least partly facing upper and/or rearward surface, and alternatively or additionally a rear edge of the board.
Preferably the lighting member may be protected and optionally held in position by a protector member.
The lighting member may be provided within a recess of the protector member, and/or of the board.
The protector member may be elongate. The protector member may extend around at least part of a rear portion of an at least partly upper surface and a rear edge of the board.
The protector member may have a U-shaped channel which may extend around a rear edge of the board. The lighting member and optionally the protector member may be mounted to be rear facing on the skateboard, i.e. visible from at least a rear side of the skateboard.
The protector member 'may be fixed to the board by fixing means, e.g. screws.
Preferably the protector member may be made from a polymeric material, e.g. polypropylene (PP) .
The protector member may be at least partly transparent or translucent. The protector member may be coloured, e.g. white.
The/each lighting member may include or comprise a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) .
Typically the lighting member may include around twelve LEDs. The LEDs may be substantially equally spaced along the lighting member.
The lighting member and/or the LEDs thereof may be of any one colour or a number of colours, particularly one colour, .e.g. red.
The lighting member may be at least partially transparent or translucent.
The lighting member may be made from a polymeric material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride (PVC) .
In a braking position or disposition the board may be disposed at an angle from a supporting surface such as the ground.
Preferably in a braking position a rear portion of the board may be facing or tilted down towards or be in contact with the supporting surface, and a front portion of the board may be facing or tilted up away or be distal from the supporting surface.
In a braking position a rear portion of the skateboard may be forced by a user or rider against a supporting surface such as the ground by applying pressure onto a/the rear portion of the board.
Preferably in a braking position a lower side of a rear portion of the board is made to contact the supporting surface. Alternatively in a braking position a brake member or tail guard or the protector member may be made to contact the supporting surface.
The brake member or tail guard may be provided at or near a/the rear portion and on a lower side of the board. The brake member may be made from a polymeric material, e.g. polypropylene (PP) .
Movement of the skateboard to a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard at the braking position may cause switch means, e.g. tilt switch means, to operate, close or activate and the illumination means to switch on, i.e. illuminate, e.g. continuously or intermittently (flash) .
Movement of the skateboard from a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard at a non-braking position may cause the switch means, e.g. tilt switch means, to cease operating, open or deactivate and the lighting means to switch off, i.e. not illuminate or flash.
The skateboard may comprise electronic means activated by the switch means, e.g. by movement of the skateboard to and from a braking position.
The electronic means may comprise circuit means comprising the switch means. The switch means may be completed by movement of the skateboard to a braking position and broken by movement of the skateboard to a non-braking position.
Preferably the switch means is completed by contact of an electrically conductive member, e.g. a rolling member or sliding member, such as a metallic ball, with a contact member(s) , e.g. a plate(s), which may be fixed relative to the board, and broken by movement of the electrically conductive member away from the contact member (s) . The contact member (s) may be electrically conductive, e.g. metallic.
An angle of the board when the skateboard is maintained at a braking position may cause the electrically conductive member to move, e.g. roll or slide, towards and stay in contact with the contact member (s) .
An angle of the board when the skateboard is maintained at a non-braking position may cause the electrically conductive member to move, e.g. roll or slide, away from and not contact the contact member (s) . The electronic means may comprise a further switch means having a switch member.
Preferably, the switch member can be set by a user to at least a first or off position, or to a second position wherein the illumination means switches on when the skateboard is in or at a braking position, or additionally to a third position wherein the illumination means switches on, e.g. continuously or intermittently, e.g. independent of the angle of the board.
The circuit means may comprise a power source, e.g. one or more batteries, and the illumination means, e.g. the LEDs of the lighting member.
One or more components of the electronic means, e.g. at least one electrical power source, e.g. battery, circuitry, and switch means, may be provided below the board, e.g. in a compartment, e.g. in the electronics or switch box, located between the rear baseplate and the board member.
The switch box may be located between the rear baseplate and the board, and the spacer box or riser may¬ be located between the front baseplate and the board. The switch box and spacer box may be at least of substantially similar height. This allows for the board to be substantially level or parallel to the surface upon which it is placed.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a skateboard comprising at least one lighting means controlled by a switch means or mechanism which is operable by disposing the skateboard in a braking or tilted position.
For example, when the skateboard is horizontal the switch means is off, while when the skateboard is tilted backwards, e.g. at an angle of around at least 30°, e.g. at an angle of around 45°, the switch means is on.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
Referring initially to Figures 1 (a) to 5 there is shown a self or foot-propelled vehicle, generally designated 5, according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The self or foot -propelled vehicle 5 comprises at least one illumination means or rear brake 10.
In this embodiment the self or foot-propelled vehicle 5 is a skateboard 15. The skateboard 15 has a plurality of rolling means or wheels comprising a pair of front wheels comprising a front left wheel 20 and a front right wheel 21, and a pair of rear wheels comprising a rear left wheel 25 and a rear right wheel 26. The skateboard 15 comprises a board member or board 30.
The pair of front wheels 20,21 is connected to a front truck 35. The front truck 35 is connected to the board 30 via a front baseplate 36. A spacer box or riser 40 is provided between the front baseplate 36 and the board 30.
The pair of rear wheels 25,26 is connected to a rear truck 45. The rear truck 45 is connected to the board 30 via a rear baseplate 46. A switch means 50, e.g. a switch box 55, is provided between the rear baseplate 46 and the board 30. A rear portion 60 of the skateboard 15 is provided with the illumination means 10. The illumination means 10 comprises an elongate illumination or lighting member or rod 11 which is provided around or along an edge of a rear portion 60 of the skateboard, rearward of the rear wheels 25,26.
The lighting member 11 is typically made from a polymeric material, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) .
The lighting member 11 is protected and held in position - e.g. within a recess of an edge of a rear portion 60 - by a protector member 65. The lighting member 11 is provided within a recess 66 of the protector member 65. The protector member 65 comprises the recess
66 in the form of a U-shaped channel which extends around a rear edge of a rear portion 60 of the board 30. The protector member 65 is fixed to the board 30 by fixing means such as screws 70.
The protector member 65 is typically made from a polymeric material, such as polypropylene (PP) . The protector member 65 is at least partly transparent or translucent, and is white in colour.
The lighting member 11 includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs), e.g. around twelve LEDs. The
LEDs are substantially equally spaced along the lighting member 11. In this embodiment the lighting member 11 and/or the LEDs thereof are red in colour.
In a braking position a lower side 61 of the rear portion 60 of the skateboard 15 is made to dip down and contact a supporting surface, such as the ground, by a user or rider applying pressure onto the rear portion 60 of the board 30.
Movement of the skateboard 15 to a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard 15 at the braking position causes the switch means 50 to operate or activate and the illumination means 10 to switch on, i.e. illuminate, either continuously or intermittently (flash) .
Movement of the skateboard 15 from a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard 15 at a non-braking position causes the switch means 50 to cease operating or deactivate and the illumination means 10 to switch off, i.e. not illuminate or flash.
Advantageously the switch means 50 comprise tilt switch means 51. The skateboard 15 comprises electronic means 70 which are activated by the switch means 50, i.e. by movement of the skateboard 15 to and from a braking position.
The electronic means 70 comprises circuit means 75 having the switch means 50 completed by movement of the skateboard 15 to a braking position and broken by movement of the skateboard 15 to a non-braking position. The switch means 50 is completed by contact of an electrically conductive member 80 with contacts or contact plates 85, and broken by movement of the electrically conductive member 80 away from the contact plates 85.
In this embodiment the electrically conductive member 80 is a movable or rollable member, and comprises a metallic ball 81. The contacts 85 are electrically conductive metallic plates.
An angle of the board 30 when the skateboard 15 is maintained at a braking position causes the electrically conductive member 80 to move or roll towards and stay in contact with the contact plates 85.
An angle of the board 30 when the skateboard 15 is maintained at a non-braking position causes the electrically conductive member 80 to move, e.g. roll or slide, away from and not contact the contact plates 85. The electronic means 70 comprises a further switch means 90 having a switch member 91. The switch member 91 can be set by a user to a first or off position, or to a second position wherein the illumination means 10 switches on and flashes when the skateboard 15 is in or at a braking position. The switch member 91 can further have an optional third position wherein the illumination means 10 switches on continuously or intermittently (i.e. flashes) independent of the disposition of the skateboard 15.
The electronic means 70 comprises circuit means 75, including, for example, a power source such as one or more batteries (not shown) , and the LEDs of the lighting member 11. Alternatively the power source may comprise a dynamo and/or rechargeable battens.
A protecting plate 95 covers the electrical wires which connect the switch means 50 to the LEDs of the illumination means 10.
At least some components of the electronic means 70, including at least one power source, (e.g. battery not shown) , circuitry (not shown) , and switch means 50 are provided below the board 30, in the switch box 55 located between the rear baseplate 46 and the board 30. The switch box 55 located between the rear baseplate 46 and the board 30, and the spacer box or riser 40 located between the front baseplate 36 and the board 30, are of substantially similar dimensions. This allows for the board 30 to be substantially level or parallel to the surface upon which it is placed, e.g. for the board 30 to be horizontal when the skateboard 15 is placed on a horizontal surface with wheels lowermost.
Referring now to Figures 6a to 6c there is shown a self or foot-propelled vehicle 5' according to a second embodiment of the present invention. In this embodiment the self or foot-propelled vehicle 5' is a skateboard 15' . Like parts of the skateboard 5' are designated by the same integers as the skateboard 5 of Figure 1 (a) to 5, but suffixed " ' " . The skateboard 15' comprises all the features of skateboard 15, with the additional inclusion of a brake member or tail guard 100' .
The brake member or tail guard 100' is provided on a lower side 61' of a rear portion 60' of the board 30', and may extend at least partially transversely across the lower side 61' of the board 30' .
The brake member 100' is typically made from a polymeric material, such as polypropylene (PP) .
In a braking position the brake member 100' is made to contact a supporting surface, such as the ground, by a user or rider applying pressure onto a rear portion 60' of the board 30' .
It will be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention hereinbefore described are given by way of example only and are not meant to limit the scope thereof in any way. It will particularly be appreciated that while the particularly beneficial and advantageous disclosed embodiments are skateboards the invention may be applied to other foot or self-propelled vehicles.

Claims

1. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard comprising illumination means.
2. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 1, wherein the self or foot -propelled vehicle is a skateboard.
3. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 1 or 2, wherein the illumination means comprises flashing means or intermittent illumination means.
4. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 , wherein the skateboard comprises a board member or portion or board.
5. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 4, wherein the board is a wooden board.
6. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the skateboard comprises front rolling means, such as at least a pair of front wheels, optionally disposed in transverse relation to one another, and rear rolling means, such as at least a pair of rear wheels, optionally disposed in transverse relation to one another.
7. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 6, wherein the front rolling means are connected to a front truck, the front truck is connected to the board via a front baseplate, and a spacer box, casing or riser is provided between the front baseplate and the board.
8. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 6 or 7, wherein the pair of rear rolling means is connected to a rear truck and the rear truck is connected to the board via a rear baseplate.
9. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a switch means, optionally provided within an electronics or switch box or casing or associated with a/another spacer box, casing or riser, is provided, such as between a/the rear baseplate and a/the board.
10. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in claim 9, wherein, in use, the switch means is operated or caused to be operated so as to cause the illumination means to illuminate or switch on.
11. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in either or claims 7 or 8 or claims 9 or 10 when dependent upon either claims 7 or 8 , wherein the truck (s) and/or baseplate (s) is made from a metallic material, such as aluminium or aluminium alloy.
12. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, at least a rear portion of the skateboard, such as a rear portion of a/the board, is provided with the illumination means, the rear portion optionally being provided rearward of rear rolling means.
13. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the illumination means comprise at least one elongate illumination or lighting member, rod or strap.
14. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, the illumination means comprise an illumination or lighting member.
15. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in 14, wherein the lighting member is provided along, around or adjacent an edge of at least part of a rear portion of the board.
16. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 14 or 15, wherein the lighting member is provided wholly or at least partly rearward of rear rolling means.
17. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in any of claims 14 to 16, wherein the lighting member is at least partly provided on or visibly adjacent an at least partly upper and/or rear surface of a/the board.

18. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in any of claims 14 to 17, wherein the lighting member is protected and optionally held in position by a protector member.
19. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in claim 18, wherein the lighting member is provided within a recess of the protector member and/or of the board.
20. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in either of claims 18 or 19, wherein the protector member is elongate and optionally extends around at least part of a rear portion of an at least partly upper surface and a rear edge of the board.
21. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 18 to 20, wherein the protector member has a U-shaped channel which extends around a rear edge of the board.
22. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 14 to 21, wherein the lighting member and optionally a/the protector member is/are mounted to be rear facing on the skateboard, so as to be visible from at least rearward of the skateboard.
23. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 18 to 21 or claim 22 when dependant upon any of claims 18 to 21, wherein a/the protector member is fixed to a/the board by fixing means.
24. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 18 to 23, wherein the protector member is made from a polymeric material, such as polypropylene (PP) .
25. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 18 to 24, wherein the protector member is at least partly transparent or translucent.
26. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in any of claims 18 to 25, wherein the protector member is coloured, such as white.
27. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 14 to 26, wherein the/each lighting member comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) .
28. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 14 to 27, wherein the/each lighting member and/or the light emitting diodes (LEDs) thereof is/are of any one colour or a number of colours, such as red.
29. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 14 to 28, wherein the lighting member is at least partially transparent or translucent.
30. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any claims 14 to 29, wherein the lighting member is of elongate tubular form, and optionally made from a polymeric material, such as polyvinylchloride
(PVC) .
31. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein in a braking position or disposition the board is disposed at an angle from a supporting surface such as the ground.
32. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein in a braking position a rear portion of the skateboard faces or tilts down towards or is in contact with the supporting surface, and a front portion of the board faces or tilts up away or is distal from the supporting surface.
33. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein in a braking position a rear portion of the skateboard is forced by a user or rider against a supporting surface such as the ground by applying pressure onto a/the rear portion of the board.
34. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard, as claimed in any of claims 1 to 33, wherein in a braking position a lower side of a rear portion of the skateboard is made to contact the supporting surface.
35. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 1 to 33, wherein in a braking position a brake member or tail guard of the protector member is made to contact the supporting surface.
36. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 35, wherein the brake member or tail guard is provided at or near a/the rear portion and on a lower side of the board.
37. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 35 or 36, wherein the brake member is made from a polymeric material, such as polypropylene (PP) .
38. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein movement of the skateboard to a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard at the braking position causes switch means, such as tilt switch means, to operate, close or activate and the illumination means to switch on or illuminate, such as continuously or intermittently.
39. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 38, wherein movement of the skateboard from a braking position and/or maintenance of the skateboard at a non-braking position causes the switch means, such as tilt switch means, to cease operating, open or deactivate and the illumination means to switch off or not illuminate.
40. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 38 or 39, wherein the skateboard comprises electronic means activated by the switch means, such as by movement of the skateboard to and from a braking position.
41. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 40, wherein the electronic means comprises circuit means comprising the switch means, the switch means being completed or closed by movement of the skateboard to a braking position and broken or opened by movement of the skateboard to a non-braking position.
42. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 38 to 41, wherein the switch means is completed by contact of an electrically conductive member, such as a rolling member, slidable member or metallic ball, with contact member (s) , and broken by movement of the electrically conductive member, away or out of contact with from the contact member (s), optionally the conductive member and/or contact member (s) being formed at least partly from electrically conductive material, such as a metallic material.
43. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 42, wherein an angle of the board when the skateboard is maintained at a braking position causes the electrically conductive member to move, such as roll or slide, towards and stay in contact with the contact plate (s) .
44. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 42 or 43, wherein an angle of the board when the skateboard is maintained at a non- braking position causes the electrically conductive member to move, such as roll or slide away from and not contact the contact plate (s) .
45. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in any of claims 40 or 41 or claims 42 to 44 when dependent upon either of claims 40 or 41, wherein the electronic means comprises a further switch means having a switch member.
46. A self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in claim 45, wherein the switch member is capable of being set by a user to at least a first or off position, or to a second position wherein the illumination means switches on when the skateboard is in or at a braking position, or additionally to a third position wherein the illumination means switches on, such as continuously or intermittently, independent of the angle of the board.
47. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 40 or 41 or claims 42 to 44 when dependent upon either of claims 40 or 41, wherein at least some components of the electronic means, optionally at least one electrical power source, circuitry, and switch means, are provided below a/the board, such as in a compartment, such as in a/the electronics box located between a/the rear baseplate and the board.
48. A self or foot -propelled vehicle or skateboard as claimed in either of claims 40 or 41 or claims 42 to 47 when dependent upon claims 40 or 41, wherein a/the electronics box is located between a/the rear baseplate and a/the board, and a/the spacer box or riser is located between a/the front baseplate and the board, and the electronics box and the spacer box are of substantially the same height .
49. A self or foot -propelled vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, where the illumination means comprise a rear brake light.
50. A self or foot -propelled vehicle as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the illumination means illuminate when the self or foot-propelled vehicle or skateboard is in a braking orientation or disposition, such as rearwardly tilted.
51. A skateboard comprising at least one lighting or illumination means controlled by a switch means or mechanism which is operable by disposing the skateboard in a braking or tilted position.
52. A skateboard as claimed in claim 51, wherein when the skateboard is horizontal the switch means is off, and when the skateboard is tilted backwards, such as at an angle of around at least 30°, such as at an angle of around 45°, the switch means is on.
53. A self or foot propelled vehicle or skateboard as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings .
