EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE
Technical Field
The present invention relates to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve. Particularly the EGR valve is the main emissions control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The EGR valve is opened by the application of vacuum/ pressure to its control diaphragm. The opening and closing of the EGR valve and the amount of recirculation of exhaust gas depends on the engine design.
Background
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a NOx (nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide) reduction technique used in most gasoline and diesel engines.
EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Mixing the incoming air with recirculated exhaust gas dilutes the mix with inert gas, lowering the adiabatic flame temperature and (in diesel engines) reducing the amount of excess oxygen. The exhaust gas also increases the specific heat capacity of the mix lowering the peak combustion temperature. Because NOx formation progresses much faster at high temperatures, EGR serves to limit the generation of NOx. NOx is primarily formed when a mix of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperatures.

Industrial Applicability:
The disclosed exhaust gas recirculation valve potential application in any exhaust gas recirculation system. The disclosed exhaust gas recirculation valve finds particular applicability in automotives, especially in most gasoline and diesel engines.
The exhaust gas recirculation valve is the main emission control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The valve is located near the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust manifold and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust gases to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperatures and helps to controlling the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Referring Fig.2, the exhaust gas recirculation valve is opened by the application of vacuum to its control diaphragm. The opening and closing of the exhaust gas recirculation valve and the amount of recirculation of exhaust gas depends on the engine design.
The advantages of integrating the actuator unit with valve unit are, the exhaust gas recirculation valve occupies less space, the response time of the valve is reduced, and complicated linkages between valve unit and the actuator unit is avoided which increases reliability. The top cover (15) of the actuator unit is made up of plastic material (PBT) which has advantages of low cost, low density, and ease of machining. The gaskets at the interfaces between diaphragm (3) and the metal parts acts as thermal barrier, it prevents the conduction of heat from valve body (1) to the diaphragm (3), and also prevents the conduction of heat from shaft (7) to the diaphragm (3). The crimping process during assembly has some advantages like no fasteners are required for joining valve and the actuator, and time required for the assembly is reduced.
