Abstract

The invention relates to RFID-based object tracking for the visually impaired. The invention uses a mobile RFID reader which is built into a mobile device having a processing capacity and adapted for the visually impaired, with the aim of locating objects and areas of interest in the home using active and passive UHF RFID tags. Three categories of tagged elements can be distinguished: fixed, semi-static and dynamic. Upon detection of tags close to the antenna, an association (object, location) is made in the database which may be located locally in relation to the device or remotely, so that multiple mobile devices can access same. The invention has three operating modes: normal, in which the database is updated regularly with locations; query, in which the name of the object is indicated and the last location in which said object was detected is supplied; and search, in which an alarm is activated if the object is detected.

The present invention falls within the field of radio frequency identification. The invention also falls within the scope of support applications for blind people, as far as home adaptation is concerned.
Usually in homes where a blind person resides, the orientation and location of furniture and objects is based solely on routine. However, when several people live together, and only some of them suffer from a visual impairment, this mechanism can become quite ineffective.
An invention is proposed that brings together the functions of locating and identifying elements in a home by means of RFID, and that is adapted to the needs that determine a visual disability. There are currently several location solutions based, in part or in full, on RFID. Some are focused on tracking and identifying people based on biometric data.
Most commonly, RFID technology is applied to object tracking, as set forth in WO / 2004/008387, where a system for the tracking and control of medications by RFID is described. Each prescription has an associated label that relates it to a database, where data is collected from it. These data are consulted by the different readers who wish so.
Document US20070013541 proposes a system for managing the inventory of a laboratory, where each piece of equipment has an RFID tag. When a piece is saved, it is automatically scanned by one of the readers of each cabinet, which are fixed, and their data updated in the database.
Similarly, in document US20050270158, a solution for tracking mobile elements (either objects or people) is presented as they cross specific question areas, where readers are permanently installed. More specifically applied to the home, is the system US 20060190538, in which the household items are labeled, and the RFID reader plugs are provided, thus constituting a network that allows real-time knowledge of the location of objects in the house from a central server. These systems provide basic location features. The location capabilities can be extended by storing the updated information of the last known position of the objects. This is already stated in document US20060208925, in which a mobile RFID reader is updating the position of the elements labeled in its range, using the positioning information provided by a GPS system. Specifically in support of the blind, RFID technologies also have a clear application as guidance systems.
For example, document WO / 2007/072389 describes an indoor guidance system for the blind that can use RFID tags as beacons, and also contains additional information on elements of interest, associated with the map of the specific implementation.
In WO / 2006/045819, where RFID tags are arranged on sidewalks at predetermined distances, and which are associated with a spatial location in a previously known database.
This beaconing is done on a larger scale in WO / 2005/071597, where RFID tags are deployed forming a mesh in the ground. These labels store information regarding nearby fixed objects, as well as additional details of their location. This solution implies that the information that can be stored is limited, and can easily become obsolete if the objects are moved next to the labels.
Este guiado se combina con tecnologías GPS, y servicios WWW.Another system based on the same principle, but intended for outdoor use is the one set out in document WO / 2006/065430, where RFID tags are used to define a path that can be followed by the blind thanks to the RFID receivers that it carries installed on the cane and ankles. This guidance is combined with GPS technologies, and WWW services.
The use of positioning technologies such as GPS in guidance systems for the blind is a solution that has already been used in other systems, such as the one described in US20050140544, which combines the data received by GPS with additional information collected from the Internet through wireless protocols .
Document WO / 2004/059598 describes an audio object description system for the blind that relies on RFID tagging to identify the elements. The user It carries an RPID reading antenna in the hand, and at its simple contact with the object, it is identified by an acoustic signal.
The proposed invention improves the solutions set forth above, focusing on their proper use by blind people, with the possibility of activating an acoustic signaling system. It covers the ideas of identification by RPID and management of locations of objects through a database. This database, either local or remote, is kept updated autonomously, providing the memory system.
A single mobile RPID reader and antenna is used, whose specific use in the home (indoor) simplifies their realization and the associated cost since they are the most expensive part of the RPID system.
The use of three categories of labels makes it easy to discriminate associations in the database. In addition, the use of UHF frequency tags is proposed, which makes the reading range between one and three meters, eliminating the need for physical contact or close proximity. This range is adjustable, when using both active and passive labels.
Divulgación de la invenciónDisclosure of the invention
While applications for groups with different disabilities suffer from high costs, the present invention offers an economically competitive solution.
The installation costs are reduced to those derived from adhering the standard RPID tags of UHF frequencies to the different household objects and their inclusion in the location database.
Se distinguen tres categorías de objetos etiquetados:There are three categories of labeled objects:
- estáticos, que permanecerán siempre en su lugar y que constituyen las principales referencias espaciales, por ejemplo, puertas, paredes ... ;- static, which will always remain in place and that constitute the main spatial references, for example, doors, walls ...;
- semiestáticos que normalmente están en el mismo lugar, pero son susceptibles de ser desplazados, siendo una referencia espacial menos fiable, por ejemplo, muebles; - dinámicos, que son los elementos que habitualmente serán objeto de búsqueda.- semi-static that are normally in the same place, but are likely to be displaced, being a less reliable spatial reference, for example, furniture; - dynamic, which are the elements that will usually be searched.
El usuario porta un dispositivo móvil con capacidad de proceso y capacidad lectoraThe process of creating the database will be dynamic, being possible after the initial installation, add or remove elements from the database, as required. The user carries a mobile device with process capacity and reading ability
El dispositivo móvil estará adaptado a las necesidades propias del invidente, para permitir la adecuada comunicación de comandos de forma verbal o mediante teclado.RFID, which will autonomously detect tagged objects, and dynamically update the location stored in the database, which may be local to the mobile or remote device, in which case it will be accessed by wireless means. The mobile device will be adapted to the needs of the blind, to allow proper communication of commands verbally or by keyboard.
To search commands, the mobile device will respond verbally, with the last location stored in the database.
It will also be possible to set an audible alarm, which will be triggered when an object is in the detection field of the RPID reader, which will allow you to search for objects in unknown locations a priori, or avoid obstacles that have been displaced.
Another possibility is that in the same home there are two or more blind people, each with their mobile device, and they share the location database, which will be remote to the devices.

Maneras de realización de la invenciónWays of carrying out the invention
The inventoried elements are identified by standard RFID tags of UHF frequencies. These tags will be passive or active (that is, they will drain energy from the reader or have their own battery), as deemed necessary to increase the detection range of the object to which they are fixed or not.
There are three types of labeled objects, depending on their mobility. First we have static objects, which constitute spatial references of the home and that can identify areas of the house and not necessarily objects; semi-static, which are objects that normally do not change location and dynamic, which can be easily displaced. These tags are detected by the antenna of the portable RFID reader card, which is integrated into a mobile device with commercial process capability. This device will be in charge of processing the identity of the detected tags, and storing it in the location database.
It is possible to consider a scenario in which several mobile devices are active in the same home, so in that case, the database can be remote, so that the data that is dumped is shared by the different devices.
In addition to the autonomous operation process of the mobile device, the user can make inquiries to determine the location of specific elements, using the keyboard or audio interface. Another possibility is to set alarms, which will be triggered when the object being searched enters the detection area of the RFID reader.
