Abstract

A polarization direction detector for a ferroelectric material which includes at least one probe which should be disposed in contact with or in the vicinity of the surface of a ferroelectric material, and an electric field applying means for applying an alternating electric field to a capacitor component immediately below the probe inside the ferroelectric material, and which detects the polarization direction of the ferroelectric material immediately below the probe based on a change in electrostatic capacity of the capacitor component accompanying the application of the alternating electric field. The polarization direction detector also includes a resonant circuit including a capacitor component, a reference phase oscillator for applying a high-frequency AC signal to the resonant circuit, a phase comparing means for generating a phase difference signal having a signal level in accordance with a phase difference between a resonant signal extracted from the resonant circuit with the application of the high-frequency AC signal to the resonant circuit and the high-frequency AC signal, and a synchronous detecting means which synchronously detects the phase difference signal based on a synchronous signal and generates a polarization direction detection signal corresponding to the polarization direction immediately below the probe inside the ferroelectric material.
