Definitions
- a beverage dispensing apparatus comprising a vessel with cooling means
- the invention is related to a beverage dispensing apparatus for enclosing a removable keg containing the beverage to be dispensed, comprising cooling means for cooling the beverage and a tap for dispensing the beverage.
- Beverage dispensing apparatus for commercial use are known for dispensing draft beer in taverns and the like. Thereby, in general, the beer is cooled in a chiller while it is guided to the beer dispensing tap.
- Such draft beer dispensing apparatus are utilized in taverns where large volumes of beer are dispensed everyday, and such taverns have space available to store voluminous chillers. This is not the case for a domestic beer dispensing apparatus that is adapted to be placed on the countertop in a kitchen or on a table. For that reason, in a beer dispensing apparatus for domestic use, the beer can be cooled while it is in the keg, before it is guided out of the keg to the beer dispensing tap of the apparatus.
- Such a domestic beer dispensing apparatus is disclosed in WO-A-2004/051163.
- the invention is related to a beverage dispensing apparatus, i.e. an apparatus for dispensing any kind of beverage that has to be cooled down to a drinking temperature, hereinafter will also be referred to a beer dispensing apparatus.
- a beverage dispensing apparatus i.e. an apparatus for dispensing any kind of beverage that has to be cooled down to a drinking temperature
- other beverages can be treated in the same way.
- the keg containing beer the keg can be placed for some time in a refrigerator before it is placed in the beer dispensing apparatus. Afterwards, the keg can be cooled while it is present in the beer dispensing apparatus in order to maintain its low temperature.
- the beer dispensing apparatus can be provided with a so called Peltier cooling device, being known in the art, whereby heat is absorbed at one junction and released at another junction of paired metals or semiconductors when electric current passes through these junctions.
- the Peltier cooling device are the limited dimension of it and the fact that the Peltier cooling device does not make any noise when it is in use.
- such cooling device has only a limited cooling capacity, so that it takes a relative long time when the beer in the keg has to be cooled down from the environmental temperature to the desired drinking temperature. Cooling down a keg containing 6 liter beer may take more than 10 hours when it is cooled down in a domestic beer dispensing apparatus from 23° C to 3° C.
- An object of the invention is a beverage dispensing apparatus for enclosing a keg containing a beverage, comprising cooling means, whereby the beverage to be dispensed can be cooled down from a relative high environmental temperature to drinking temperature in a relative short period of time, without the need of relative high electric current supply to the beverage dispensing apparatus and/or without the need of a large cooling device volume.
- the dispensing apparatus comprises a vessel for containing a predetermined quantity of the beverage, whereby first conduct means are present for guiding the beverage from the keg to the vessel and whereby second conduct means are present for guiding the beverage from the vessel to the dispensing tap, and whereby the cooling means are provided for cooling the beverage in the vessel.
- the cooling means cool a limited quantity of the beverage, so that the beverage can be cooled in a short period of time without a high electric current supply.
- the content of the vessel is at least 0.20 liter, so that one or some drinking portions of the beverage can be dispensed shortly after the dispensing apparatus is switched on, and more drinking portions can be dispensed shortly afterwards.
- the content of the vessel is less than 1 liter, more preferably less than 0.5 liter. Thereby, the quantity of beverage in de vessel is small enough to be cooled down in a reasonably short time.
- the cooling means comprise a Peltier cooling device for cooling the vessel.
- the relative small heat absorbing part of the Peltier device can be integrated in the vessel, so that an effective heat transfer between the cooling device and the beverage in the vessel is achieved.
- the cooling means comprise a reservoir for containing a cooling liquid, whereby the vessel is located in the reservoir, so that the vessel is surrounded by the cooling liquid.
- the reservoir is a chamber filled with the cooling liquid, for example water with up to 5% glycol by volume, so that it has a freezing temperature some degrees below 0 0 C.
- the vessel is provided with cooling fins extending in the cooling liquid, in order to improve the heat transfer between the vessel and the cooling liquid.
- a stirring device is present in the reservoir, in order to further improve the heat transfer between the vessel and the surrounding cooling liquid.
- the reservoir is provided with a Peltier cooling device for cooling the cooling liquid in the reservoir.
- a Peltier cooling device for cooling the cooling liquid in the reservoir.
- the reservoir has an opening giving access from outside to the cooling liquid. Through that opening the reservoir can be filled with water containing ice cubes, and afterwards further ice cubes can be added when the former ice cubes are melted.
- detection means are present for measuring the temperature of the beverage in the vessel.
- the detected temperature can, for example, be indicated at the outside of the dispensing apparatus, so that the temperature of the beverage to be dispensed can be seen.
- signal means can be present to give a sound or light or other signal when the temperature of the beverage in the vessel is cooled below a predetermined value, in particular a value near the drinking temperature.
- the beverage dispensing apparatus comprises means for blocking the tap when the detected temperature is above a predetermined value. Thereby, it is ensured that the apparatus dispenses only beverage at a desired temperature, whereby it may happen that it takes some seconds before the next portion of beverage can be dispensed. The user of the dispensing apparatus will get used to that and will accept that, because of all advantages of the beverage dispensing apparatus.
- the invention is also related to a method for dispensing a beverage contained in a keg, whereby the beverage is cooled before it is dispensed through a tap, whereby the beverage is guided through first conduct means from the keg to a vessel having a predetermined content, and is guided through second conduct means from the vessel to the tap, and whereby the beverage is cooled in the vessel.
- the invention will now be further elucidated by means of a description of an embodiment of a domestic beer dispensing apparatus for enclosing a removable keg containing the beer, comprising cooling means for cooling the beer and a tap for dispensing the beer, whereby reference is made to a schematic drawing of the apparatus, whereby components of the apparatus are diagrammatically represented in the drawing.
- Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a beverage dispensing apparatus according to the invention.
- the dispensing apparatus encloses a keg 1 containing beer 2.
- the means for driving the beer out of the keg 1 through conduct 3 are not represented.
- the beer 2 can be enveloped in a flexible plastic bag, whereby the end of conduct 3 extends into the bag. Thereby, the beer 2 can be driven out of the keg 1 by pumping air between the inner wall of the keg 1 and the flexible bag.
- the keg 1 can be filled with the beer 2, whereby nitrogen or CO 2 is pumped in the keg 1 above the beer 2 in order to drive the beer 2 out of the keg 1.
- the beer 2 is pressurized by pumping means, so that the beer 2 can be guided through conduct 3 to vessel 4.
- the shown dispensing apparatus comprises a tap 5, having an outlet 6. After the tap 5 is opened by moving handle 7 in the direction indicated by arrow 8, the beer 2 can flow from the keg 1, through the conduct 3 to the vessel 4, and through the second conduct 9 to the tap 5, in order to leave the dispensing apparatus through outlet 6. Thereby, a drinking portion of the beer can flow into a drinking glass 10.
- the vessel 4 is located in a reservoir 11 containing a cooling liquid 12, whereby the cooling liquid 12 surrounds the vessel 4.
- the reservoir 11 comprises a Peltier cooling device 13 for cooling the liquid 12.
- the part of the conduct 3 that is immersed in the cooling liquid 12 is wound into a coil 14, in order to achieve a cooling effect on the beer flowing through the coil 14.
- the beer in the vessel 4 is cooled down by the surrounding cooling liquid 12, whereby the heat transfer is increased by the rotating action of the stirring device 15, causing a flow in the cooling liquid 12.
- the vessel 4 can be provided with fins (not shown) extending in the surrounding cooling liquid 12.
- the reservoir 11 is closed. However, there can be a closable opening in the higher wall of the reservoir 11, so that, for example, ice cubes can be added to the cooling liquid 12.
