Description
A SLEEPING ACCESSORY
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a sleeping accessory and, more specifically, to a sleeping accessory that is cost-effective to manufacture as well as being hygienic, easy to keep clean, and durable and which can be used for pets as well as for a baby or small child.
Background to the Invention
Portable beds and play areas for babies and small children such as camping cots, blankets, and prams are well known. A problem associated with such devices is that they are at least in part manufactured from cloth which, should it become soiled, is difficult to clean.
Beds for pets (such as cats and dogs) are typically manufactured from a soft foam material that is covered by a woven material. Alternatively, beds are made from woven cane and are provided with a cushion for the pet to sleep on.
Beds as described above are often damaged by pets chewing them and more often than not, destroying them, so that the bed needs to be replaced. The soft foam material or cushion presents a breeding ground for bacteria, insects, and the like, and is difficult to keep clean. Even if the cushion or, where possible, the entire bed, is washed regularly, the bacteria and odour of the pet are invariably absorbed into the material. This washing process is also time consuming as one has to wait for bed to dry. The washing process is somewhat unpleasant and therefore seldom gets done.
The inventor believes that a need exists for providing a sleeping accessory that can be used for a baby or small child as well as for pets and which overcomes at least some of the disadvantages described above.
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention, there is provided a sleeping accessory including:- a substantially planar receiving portion and a raised rim portion surrounding the receiving portion, wherein the accessory includes an inner core of resiliently deformable material and an integral, substantially liquid impermeable skin surrounding the inner core.
The sleeping accessory may be used by a baby or small child or a pet such as a cat or a dog.
The sleeping accessory may be manufactured from a polyurethane.
The polyurethane may include a diisocyanato diphenylmethane and a polyol blend.
The diisocyanato diphenylmethane may be commercially available under the trade name "Suprasec 2030" and the polyol blend may be commercially available under the trade name "Durauto 1435".
The mass ratio of the diisocyanato diphenylmethane to the polyol blend may be about 47:100.
The sleeping accessory may be manufactured by a conventional moulding process for moulded integral skin polyurethane products.
During manufacture, the polyurethane mixture may be filled into a mould, which mould may be heated to a temperature of between 30 and 40, typically 35 0C until such time as the polyurethane mixture has completed foaming and the integral skin has formed.
The polyurethane mixture may include a commercially available foaming agent and a colouring agent of choice.
As stated above, the accessory may include a substantially planar receiving portion and a raised rim portion surrounding the receiving portion. It is to be appreciated, that the receiving portion is large enough to receive a baby or small child or alternatively, a pet (e.g. a cat or a dog), thereon. An underside of the sleeping accessory may be provided with rib formations to permit stable placement of the accessory onto a surface and to minimise the use of raw materials during manufacture thereof.
It is to be appreciated, that the sleeping accessory may be provided in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes without departing from the scope of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention will now be described by way of the following, non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 shows a top view of an embodiment of a sleeping accessory in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the sleeping accessory of Figure 1 ; and
Figure 3 shows a bottom view of the sleeping accessory of Figure 1.
In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates an embodiment of a sleeping accessory in accordance with the present invention.
The accessory 10 includes a substantially planar receiving portion 16 and a raised rim portion 18 surrounding the receiving portion 16. An underside 20 of the accessory 10 is provided with rib formations 22 to permit stable placement of the accessory 10 onto a surface 24 as shown in Figure 2 and to minimise the use of raw materials during manufacture of the accessory 10.
The receiving portion 16 is dimensioned so as to receive a baby or small child alternatively, a pet, thereon.
The sleeping accessory 10 is manufactured from a polyurethane including a diisocyanato diphenylmethane and a polyol blend.
The diisocyanato diphenylmethane is commercially available under the trade name "Suprasec 2030" and the polyol blend is commercially available under the trade name "Durauto 1435".
The mass ratio of Suprasec 2030 to Durauto 1435 is about 47:100.
The sleeping accessory 10 is manufactured by a conventional moulding process for moulded integral skin polyurethane products.
During manufacture, the polyurethane mixture is filled into a mould, which mould is heated to a temperature of between 30 and 40, typically 35 0C until such time as the polyurethane mixture has completed foaming and the integral skin 14 has formed.
The polyurethane mixture typically includes a commercially available foaming agent and a colouring agent of choice.
It is to be appreciated, that the sleeping accessory 10 can be provided in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes without departing from the scope of the invention depending on whether it is to be used for a baby or small child or a pet such as a cat or a dog.
Advantages of the sleeping accessory according to the present invention include that, due to the substantially liquid-impermeable outer skin, the inner core does not absorb liquid and does also not absorb odours.
The polyurethane minimises the growth of bacteria in the sleeping accessory and the outer skin of the sleeping accessory can readily be washed and/or disinfected without having to use a washing machine.
The shape and material of manufactured of the sleeping accessory make it difficult for pets to bite off pieces thereof, so that the sleeping accessory according to the invention is more durable than conventional pet beds. Even if a pet should manage to bite off a piece of the sleeping accessory, the accessory can still be used.
It is to be appreciated, that the invention is not limited to any particular embodiment or configuration as hereinbefore generally described or illustrated.
