Abstract

A method of manufacturing a honeycomb filter, in which a shaped honeycomb body (100) is produced by shaping clay containing a ceramic material, a fired honeycomb body is produced by firing the shaped honeycomb body (100), a ground fired honeycomb body is produced by grinding the outer peripheral wall of the fired honeycomb body, and the honeycomb filter is produced by forming an outer peripheral coating wall on the outer periphery of the ground fired honeycomb body. In a cross section of the shaped honeycomb body (100) taken in the direction vertical to its center axis, if the direction extending along one partition wall (2) from the center (11) toward an outer peripheral wall (4) is a '0˚ direction' and a portion at which a straight line (12) extending in the 0˚ direction intersects with the outer peripheral wall (4) is a '0˚ direction portion' (13), the shaped honeycomb body (100) when subjected to firing has a ground portion (6) that is formed by grinding the outer peripheral wall (4) and that is located in the outer peripheral wall (4) and in a region of a width of 10 to 100 mm including a '45˚ direction portion' (15) defined with reference to the '0˚ direction.' The method can suppress occurrence of a crack in the shaped honeycomb body when fired.
