Abstract

A curtain track system comprises a track and driving pulley and end cap pulley which each mounted on the two ends of the track, and pulling cable turned around inside the track and with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier. The track comprises at least (2) shorter pieces with end to end being joined together at an intermediate position. It further comprises at least three grooves along it with the grooves of one shorter piece inserted with pins, and the other end of the pins protruding out to slide into the groove of the other. The end cap pulley has movable pulley means along the track, and with pulley means moving towards the other end of the track and concurrently with the pulling cable being pulled out from the master carrier. The end cap pulley further comprises fixing means to fix the pulley means on end of the track. When the pulley means is moved to desired place along the track, the extra length of track can be cut to desired length to suit window size without reassembly, and aligning pins engaging with (2) shorter pieces of track ensure master carrier or runners move thru smoothly to give true DIY performance.

Length Adjustable Curtain Track System
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to curtain track system with cord pulling or motor driven.
DESCRIPTION OF RELATED ART
The most of curtain track system is tailor made as per site measurement in terms of the length. This results in low efficiency in fabrication of the system as it requires site measurement to fit width of window, cutting the track as per the measurement and then assembly it at factory and transport to the site to do installation. Further this type of manufacturing process has other following drawbacks:
1. If the measurement is wrong all assembly needs to redo or the track may need to be sent back to factory to redo.
2. For the window with big width, long track is required but mostly it end up joint of two shorter pieces of tracks or more because of:
• Limitation of total length of an aluminum track
• Limitation of transporting vehicle length
• Limitation of building space in transporting inside the building like in the lift or corridor etc
However, the joint point of the two tracks is hardly aligned correctly due to rugged site condition.
3. Though many methods have been developed to connect the track together. Joint between the two tracks is normally made with a track joint tube or insert by inserting each end of two tracks to it hold them together. To ease sliding the track joint to the track, some clearance between the two should be allowed but this ends up precise alignment between the two tracks is hardly achieved. In particular, most of the curtain track now is made with aluminum materials with current extruding technology being hard to achieve desirable precision and furthermore to enhance the image and finish of the track powder coat is applied and this further makes the precision even worse. All of these ends up the curtain runners or carriers are jammed or blocked at the joint point when they pass through. When many of them accumulated are moving, it is impossible to pass through at all.
Because of the above mentioned, the manufacturing of curtain track must be localized by stocking long track (normally above 6 meter long), cut and fabricated as per actual site measurement. The long finished system is hardly transported to long distance or from one country to the other thru ocean freight or airfreight. Therefore these products must be sold at high price to cover sales, manufacturing and distribution and installation cost, and even higher when they are sold to other distanced market if proper transport are allowed. To achieve mass production of these products at lower cost, it requires standardization of system. However this process makes standardization of system impossible,

Obviously this standardized solution transfer factory assembly process to consumers and it is too complicated for normal household or even trade men to do it.
To minimize the jamming for track carriers and runner going thru the joint point of 2 pieces of track, new and precise straight cutting at joint end of 2 pieces of track are required. For this purpose or best DIY solution by hand saw, cutting track at the end where end pulley is placed is idea as the carriers and runners will not pass thru it. However the end pulley of most of curtain track using pulling cord or motor currently or above mentioned standardized package is mounted on outside of track. If the track length needs to be altered, one must move away the whole end cap pulley from the track. This leads to nearly reassembly of the track system as pulley cord or steel cable in case of motorized system and runners and carriers need to be taken out too. Again it makes DIY impossible or far from a ready made system.
THE OBJECT
The object of this invention is to provide a curtain track system using pulling cord or motor being able to easily adjust the track to the length to fit the window width with low cost and without common problems seen on convention methods.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Figure 1 shows a curtain track system 10 using pulling cord 11, comprising 2 pieces of tracks 12 and 13, driving pulley 14, end cap pulley 15 and master carrier 16 and secondary carrier 17. The track 13 and 14 is connected at joint point 18. Pulling cord 11 are looped inside the track around the driving pulley 14 and end cap pulley 15 and connected to the master carrier 16 and secondary carrier 17. Two ends of cord are fixed to master carrier 16 and secondary carrier is engaged with the cord 11.
Figure 2 shows a curtain track system 20 driven by a motor 21, comprising 2 pieces of tracks 22 and 23, driving pulley 24, end cap pulley 25 and master carrier 26 and secondary carrier 27. The track 23 and 24 is connected at joint point 28. A cord, steel cable or belt 29 (dot line) inside the track are looped around the driving pulley 24 and end cap pulley 25 and connected to the master carrier 26 and secondary carrier 27. Motor 21 is engaged with driving pulley 24 to rotate a pulley inside the latter to transfer rotating torque power to linear pulling force.
End cap pulley 25 comprises an end cap holder 251 which is inserted into the track 22, and pulley 252 mounted on the back of U shaped bracket 253 and placed inside the holder 251. A tension adjusting knob 254 is a screw nut engaging with bolt 255 sitting inside the U shape of the bracket 253, The bolt 255 is inserted through a hole (not shown) on two ends of U shaped bracket 253 and between the two ends a buffer spring 256 is placed on left side of the knob 254. The other end of bolt 255 is fixed on the extended member 257 of the folder 251. When the knob is clockwise turning it will push the pulley 252 leftward, therefore it allow to apply a pulling tension on the looped steel cable or cord 29 to ensure driving pulley 24 is fully engaged with the cord or steel cable 29 and to transmit the rotating torque to linear pulling force. However this convention design does not allows one to modify the length of the track unless re-assemble is made by separating the end cap pulley 25 from the track 22 and reinserting it.
Conventional method to join the two tracks is to use an insert member inserted into both track to align and hold them together. Alternatively it is to use a tube with same profile of the track to be inserted into the both for same purpose. Figure 3 and 4 shows curtain track 30 and 40 with a profile designed for alignment purpose. Curtain track 30 and 40 are identical in terms of support flange for carriers and position four round grooves 31 and 41 along their length. On track 30, 4 round pins 32 are inserted and fixed very tightly into the round grooves 31 with the other half protruded out. The clearance of diameter of the protruded length of the pin 31 is so made to allow them to slide into the groove 41 of track 40 easily but without any much loose engagement between them. As the pins 31 can be made very precisely and with four numbers or at least 3 numbers of the pins 31 the two tracks 30 and 40 shall be fully aligned. As shown in Figure 5 and 6, the short length of protruded length of the pin 31 ' can also allow them to slide into the holes of the groove 41' when folded track 30' and 40' are unfolded by turning sideward. As the cable or steel cable or belt 340' is soft type of materials this makes folding and unfolding the two tracks possible without damaging to it.
The number of grooves may not be only limited to 4, and it could be 3 or 5 etc. The pin shape may not be only round one and it could be other shape too.
When the two tracks are joined together, to hold them without having the pin 31 or 31 ' come out from the groove of track 41 or 41', the conventional joint insert 33 as shown in Figure 3 (or tube) can be used. On the insert 33 there are two threaded holes 33a (on one shown) to allow the screw to tighten the insert with each track. While this conventional joint is used for purpose of holding the two pieces of track together, the pins and grooves on the track are purely used for precise alignment.
Figure 7 shows another embodiment of this invention of tension adjustable curtain track system 50 (mostly for motorization) comprising movable end cap pulley 51 engaged with a curtain track 52 and inside it a pulling cord or cable 53. End cap pulley 51 comprises an end cap 511 which is inserted into the track 52, and pulley 512 mounted on the back of U shaped bracket 513 and placed inside the track 52. A tension adjusting knob 514 is a screw nut engaging with bolt 515 sitting inside the U shape of the bracket 513, The bolt 515 is inserted through a hole (not shown) on two ends of U shaped bracket 513 from right to left and between the two ends a buffer spring 516 is placed on left side of the knob 514. The left end of bolt 515 with thread 515a can be screwed into a screw nut 511a embodied inside end cap 511. Again when the knob is clockwise turning it will push the pulley 512 leftward, therefore it allows to apply a pulling tension on the looped steel cable or cord 53 to transmit the rotating torque to linear pulling force. When one wants to cut the track to a required length, he just moves the pulley 512 to rightward to the point where the actual length is required and then cuts the extra length. Finally he just screws the bolt 515 into 51 Ia, concurrently also with fixing the end cap 511 into the track 52. With this design it allows one to cutting the length of the track without separating the pulley 512 from the track 52 but only with a simple action to cover the track with removable end cap 511 and screwing in the bolt 515.
Alternative end cap pulley 51 ' to the above embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 7a. It is again engaged with a curtain track 52' and inside it a pulling cord or cable 53'. End cap pulley 51' similarly comprises an end cap 511' which is inserted into the track 52', and pulley 512' mounted on the back of U shaped bracket 513' and placed inside the track 52'. A tension adjusting knob 514' is a screw nut still engaging with bolt 515' sitting inside the U shape of the bracket 513', Again the bolt 515' is inserted through a hole (not shown) on two ends of U shaped bracket 513' from right to left and between the two ends a same buffer spring 516' is placed again on left side of the knob 514'. The difference of this alternative is that on the right side of the U shaped bracket 513' there is a L shaped bracket 517' placed below the track 52'. The head 515'a of bolt 515' is fixed to the vertical side of L shaped bracket 517' by welding or any other way. On the side horizontal to the track 52' of L shaped bracket 517', there is ahole (not shown) to allow a fixing bolt 518' to go thru to be engaged with fixing nut 519' inside of track 52'. Once fixing bolt 518' is tightened with the fixing nut 519', the whole L shaped bracket 517' together with the bolt 515' is fixed to track 52'. This well replaces the nut 511a to fix the bolt 515' with the track 52' at position required as described above, thus end cap 511' is purely a cover only now. Bonding of L shaped bracket 517' and the bolt 515' can also prevents the bolt 515' from following the turning of the knob 514' when the latter adjusts the tension as described above.
Again when the knob 514'is clockwise turning, it will push the pulley 512' leftward, therefore it allows to apply a pulling tension on the looped pulling cable or cord 53' to transmit the rotating torque to linear pulling force. Again when one wants to cut the track to a required length, he just moves the pulley 512' together with U and L shaped brackets 513', 517', bolt 515', knob 514', spring 516', fixing bolt 518' and nut 519' to rightward to the point where the actual length is required and he just tighten up the fixing bolt 518' with fixing nut 519'. Then he cuts the extra length and finally insert the end cap 511 ' to track 52'. With this design the objective is also achieved that is it allows one to cutting the length of the track without separating the end cap pulley 51' from the track 52 but only with a simple action to fasten the bolt 518' to firmly be held with track 52'.
For normal cord operated manual track system, the tension adjusting components in end cap pulley 51, bolt 515, knob 514, spring 516 and nut 511a as well as those equivalent function component in end cap pulley 51' are not needed. Similarly the end cap pulley 51" for this system comprises end cap 511 " and pulley 512". To fix the pulley 512" (similar to 512 or 512'), a dual L shaped bracket 513" mounted with the end cap pulley 512" is used as shown in Figure 7b. Similarly fixing bolt 514" and nut 515" similar to the bolt 518' and nut 519' are used to fix dual L shaped bracket 513" to the manual operated track 52" after it is moved to the required position along the track 52". Operation of adjusting length track 52" is same as described above and will not be discussed here. This end cap pulley embodiment can be also used for the motorized system when the tension adjusting mechanism is designed and placed on side of the driving pulley. The adjusting length of track with this design and configuration is similar and will not be discussed further here.
The end cap pulley 51 and 51', 51" of these embodiments can also go with other means of altering length of curtain track like extension of a curtain track by sliding out apart two separate tracks from each other with one holding other inside itself. This track system is already popular seen in market.
Figure 8 shows preassembled folded curtain track 60 using pulling cable 61 as dot line shown, comprising 2 pieces of tracks 62 and 63 folded back to back, driving pulley 64, end cap pulley 65 and master carrier 66 and secondary carrier 67 (for one way secondary carrier 67 is not required). Pulling cord 61 are looped inside the track around the driving pulley 64 and end cap pulley 65 and connected to the master carrier 66 and secondary carrier 67. The track 63 and 64 is connected at joint point 68 by pulling cord 61. End cap pulley 65 comprises end cap 65a and pulley mechanism 65b, which can slide along the track and be fastened with a screw 65c and washer 65d. On track 62 aligning pins 62a and track 63 aligning groove hole (not shown) are matched in position.
Figure 9 shows preassembled folded curtain track 60' using motor 61a' as dot line shown, comprising pulling cable 61 '(dot line shown), 2 pieces of tracks 62' and 63' folded back to back, driving pulley 64', end cap pulley 65' and master carrier 66' and secondary carrier 67' (for one way secondary carrier 67' is not required). End cap pulley 65' comprises end cap 651' and pulley mechanism 652', which are separated each other, i.e., the bolt 652'a is not engaged with nut 651'a sunk inside of end cap 651'. Again along the bolt 652'a is engaged with turning knob 652'b. Pulling cable 61' are looped inside the track around the driving pulley 64' and end cap pulley mechanism 652' and connected to the master carrier 66' and secondary carrier 67'. The track 63' and 64' is connected at joint point 68' with it. On track 62' inserted with aligning pins 62'a and track 63' aligning groove hole (not shown) are matched in position.
The discussion on the method of adjusting already assembled track will take motorized curtain track 70 as an example as shown in Figure 10, 11 and 12. The curtain track system 70 comprises driving motor 71, 2 pieces of tracks 72 and 73, driving pulley 74, end cap pulley 75 and master carrier 76 and secondary carrier 77. The track 72 and 73 is connected at joint point 78. End cap pulley 75 comprises end cap 751, pulley mechanism 752. As same described above, end cap 751 embodied with a nut 751a to engaged with bolt 752a which is a part of pulley mechanism 752. The latter also comprise a knob 752b and spring 752c engaged with the bolt 752a along its axis.
A pulling cable 79 (dot line) inside the track are looped around the driving pulley 74 and end cap pulley 75 and with one ends being loosely engaged to but the other fixed to the master carrier 76 and between the two ends being engaged loosely with secondary carrier 77. The end of pulling cable 79 toward end cap pulley 75 is ideally loosely fixed with master carrier 76 while the other end is firmly tightened with it. This allows moving pulley mechanism 752 while easily pulling the pulling cable 79 out later on. After the curtain track 70 is so assembled, it is folded at the joint point 78 and packed into about half size package of its total length.
Step 1: Unfolding the track 72 and 73 As shown in Figure 10, unfold two pieces of curtain tracks 72 and 73 into a straight piece with joint point 78 being closed. As above mentioned, the tracks are easily aligned at the joint point 78 by inserting pins on one track (not shown) into aligning hole on the other. A joint insert 78'(dot line shown) is moved and placed cross the both tracks and with a screw to fasten it each to the two.
Step 2:
Move the pulley mechanism 752 of end cap pulley 75 rightward to the position at which total length X as shown in Figure 10 is required and at same time pull out any one end (loosely engaged) of pulling cable 79 from master carrier 76 to ensure the pulling cable 79 inside the track is straight, and tighten this end of pulling cable 79 to the master carrier 76.
Step 3
Cut off the extra the length Y of the track 72.
Step 4
Insert the end cap 751 to the track 72, and fasten the bolt 752a to the nut 751a to connect both to form a complete end cap pulley 75 as shown in Figure 11. (For alternative embodiment in Figure 7a, pulley mechanism 512' shall be fixed up to the track 52' by tightening fixing bolt 518' and nut 519'. For alternative embodiment in Figure 7b, the pulley 512" shall be fixed up to track 52" by tighten fixing bolt 514" and nut 515").
Step 5
For two way (center) opening of curtain, adjust the position of secondary carrier 77 relative to that of the master carrier 76 to ensure both will stop at center point of total length of track 72 and 73. Then tighten up the secondary carrier 77 to the pulling cable 79 to ensure it to move concurrently with the master carrier 76.
Step 6
Turn knob 752b clockwise to enable to move the pulley mechanism 752 leftward, so that the tension is applied to ensure the pulling cable 79 to have sufficient friction on driving pulley 74 to allow motor to drive the master carrier 76 and secondary carrier 77. For alternative embodiment in Figure 7a, turn knob 514' clockwise to enable to move the pulley mechanism 512' leftward for same purpose. Relevant tension adjusting mechanism used for motorized track system discussed in Figure 7b will be operated in similar way for same purpose although it is not shown. This step can also be saved in the motorized track system using pulling cable (or belt) with teeth or hole being engaged with driving pulley and end cap pulley.
For one-way opening of curtain, the above Step 2 shall be: Step 2 Move the pulley mechanism 752 rightward out of the track 72 and at same time push in (no need if moving force is strong enough to pull the pulling cable 71 out of master carrier 76) from any one end of pulling cable 71 (ideally one toward the end cap as this is also loosely engaged with master carrier 76 as pre-arranged above) from master carrier 76. When it is moved out of track 72 away for a distance to give sufficient gap to take out the secondary carrier 77 or fabric hook runners (not shown and these should be moved to the track 73 between master carrier 76 and driving pulley 74). The extra length of steel cable 76 at this end must be long enough to allow the extension for the gap and without this end of cable shall totally leave out from the master carrier 76. After taking the secondary carrier 77 out, move back the pulley mechanism 752 onto the track 72 and follow step 3 of above to complete the length adjustment.
Other step is the same as those for two way (center) opening of curtain described as above, only Step 5 is not needed.
Adjustment for cord pull track system is straightforward and it simply requires moving the pulley mechanism 75b along the track 72 to position of the required length X and cut off the extra length Y. Then fasten it before the end cap 75a is covered up. The difference is the system adjustment is made without applying tension on the cord loop. Other steps would be similar and same and will not be discussed further.
With above invention, standardized curtain track system can be made with standard packing length like 1.5m, 2m and 2.5m and transported worldwide. Installer simply open box and unfold the track to full length of 3m, 4 m or 5 m and cut the actual size to fit the window size on site as per above described. With above described pin alignment embodiment, curtain will be trouble free from jamming at joint point when they pass thru it under runners and carriers. Therefore all objectives of this invention have been achieved.
With this invention thus explained, it is apparent that numerous modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention. It is therefore intended that this invention be limited only as indicated in the appended claims.

Claims

ClaimsI claims: curtain track systems comprising a track and driving pulley and end cap pulley being each mounted on the two ends of the track, and pulling cable being turned around inside the track and being with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier:
1. Said track comprising at least 2 shorter pieces with end to end being joined together at an intermediate position, and said track comprising at least three grooves along it with the grooves of one shorter piece inserted with pins, and the other end of said pins protruding out to slide into the groove of the other,
2. Curtain track system according to claim 1, at joint position of 2 shorter pieces, said track comprising a track joint being moved and placed cross the 2 shorter pieces,
3. Curtain track system according to claim 1, said end cap pulley comprising movable pulley means along said track, and with pulley means moving towards the other end of said track and concurrently with said pulling cable being pulled out from said master carrier, and said end cap pulley further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means on end of said track,
4. Curtain track system according to claim 3, said pulley means comprising a pulley sitting on the back of U shaped member but placed inside said track, with said member having a hole on each of its flange, and further comprising a bolt, spring and turning knob with said bolt being inserted thru the said two holes and said spring and turning knob sitting between the two holes.
5. Curtain track system according to claim 3and 4, said end cap pulley comprising an end cap engaged with said track and said fixing mean comprising a nut sitting inside said end cap to be engaged with the said bolt to hold said pulley means from moving away from it.
6. Curtain track system according to claim 3 and 4, said fixing mean comprising L shaped bracket with one end being fixed to the head of said bolt and the other end fixed to said track thru a screw and nut, thus holding said pulley means from moving away from it.
7. Curtain track system according to claim 3, said fixing means comprising a bracket with one end being fixed to said pulley mean and the other fixed with said track.
8. Said end cap pulley comprising movable pulley means along said track, and with said pulley means moving towards the other end of said track and concurrently with said pulling cable being pulled out from said master carrier, and said end cap pulley further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means on end of said track,
9. Curtain track system according to claim 8, said track comprising at least 2 shorter pieces with end to end being joined together at its intermediate position, and said track comprising at least three grooves along it with the grooves of one piece of
10. said shorter track inserted with pins, and the other end of said pins protruding out to slide into the grooves of the other.
11. Curtain track system according to claim 9, at joint position of said 2 shorter pieces, said track comprising a track joint being moved and placed cross the 2 shorter pieces.
12. Curtain track system according to claim 8, said pulley means comprising a pulley sitting on the back of U shaped member but placed inside said track, with said member having a hole on each of its flange, and further comprising a bolt, spring and turning knob with said bold being inserted thru the said two holes and said spring and turning knob sitting between the two holes.
13. Curtain track system according to claim 8 and 11, said end cap pulley comprising an end cap engaged with said track and said fixing mean comprising a nut sitting inside said end cap to be engaged with the said bolt to hold said pulley means from moving away from it.
14. Curtain track system according to claim 8 and 11, said fixing mean comprising L shaped bracket with one end being fixed to the head of said bolt and the other end fixed to said track thru a screw and nut, thus holding said pulley means from moving away from it.
15. Curtain track system according to claim 8, said fixing means comprising a bracket with one end being fixed to said pulley mean and the other fixed with said track.
16. Method of adjusting length of manually operated curtain track comprising a track and driving pulley and end cap pulley being each mounted on the two ends of said track, pulling cable being turned around inside said track and being with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier, said end cap pulley comprising movable pulley means along said track, and further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means with said track:, a. Pulling said pulling cable out from said master carriers and concurrently with said pulley means moving towards the other end of said track to the position of actual curtain size required, b. Cutting the extra length of said track, c. With said fixing means fixing up said pulley mean with said track firmly.
17. Method of adjusting length of motorized tension adjustable curtain track comprising a track and driving pulley and end cap pulley being each mounted on the two ends of the track, pulling cable being turned around inside the track and being with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier, said end cap pulley comprising a movable pulley means sitting along said track, and further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means with said track, said pulley means comprising a pulley sitting on the back of U shaped member but placed inside said track, with said member having a hole on each of its flange, and further comprising a bolt, spring and turning knob with said bolt being inserted thru the said two holes and said spring and turning knob sitting between the two holes a. Pulling said pulling cable out trom said master carriers ana concurrently with said pulley means moving towards the other end of said track to the position of actual curtain size required, b. Cutting the extra length of said track, c. With said fixing mean, fixing up said pulley mean with said track d. Turning said knob to move the said pulley outward to apply the sufficient friction on driving pulley and allow said motor to drive said master carrier (and secondary carrier).
18. Method of adjusting length of manually operated foldable curtain track comprising a track combined and folded with at least 2 shorter pieces with end to end being joined together at an intermediate position, and said track comprising at least three grooves along it with the grooves of one shorter piece inserted with pins and the other without, and further comprising driving pulley and end cap pulley being each mounted on the two ends of the track, pulling cable being turned around inside the track and being with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier, said end cap pulley comprising movable pulley means along said track, and further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means with said track:, a. Unfolding 2 shorter pieces or more into straight one with said pins of one shorter piece inserted to into the groove of the other without said pins. b. Pulling said pulling cable out from said master carriers and concurrently with said pulley means moving towards the other end of said track to the position of actual curtain size required, c. Cutting the extra length of said track, d. With fixing means fixing up said pulley mean with said track firmly.
19. Method of adjusting length of motorized tension adjustable foldable curtain track comprising a track combined and folded with at least 2 shorter pieces with end to end being joined together at an intermediate position, and said track comprising at least three grooves along it with the grooves of one shorter piece inserted with pins and the other without, and further comprising driving pulley and end cap pulley being each mounted on the two ends of the track, and pulling cable being turned around inside said track and being with its ends fixed on a movable master carrier, said end cap pulley comprising a movable pulley means along said track, and further comprising fixing means to fix said pulley means with said track, said pulley means comprising a pulley sitting on the back of U shaped member but placed inside said track, with said member having a hole on each of its flange, and further comprising a bolt, spring and turning knob with said bolt being inserted thru the said two holes and said spring and turning knob sitting between the two holes a. Unfolding said two shorter pieces into straight one with said pins of one shorter pieces being inserted to into the groove of the other without said pins. b. Pulling said pulling cable out from said master carriers and concurrently with said pulley means moving towards the other end of said track to the position of actual curtain size required, c. Cutting the extra length of said track, d. With said fixing mean, fixing up said pulley mean with said track e. Turning said knob to move the said pulley outward to apply the sufficient friction on driving pulley and allow said motor to drive said master carrier (and secondary carrier).
