Abstract

Provided are a knitting yarn changing method for a knitting machine, in which a yarn change starting position can be simply decided without using the data on a yarn consumption length for each stitch, and a knitting machine. In case an intersia pattern fabric (50) such as the body of a sweater is knitted by a weft knitting machine (20), pattern areas (54 and 55) are knitted subsequent to a rib-stitched area (51) between ground areas (52 and 53). On the basis of the using length of a knitting yarn (31) in trial knitting, setting means (42) sets a change-starting position (56) in the pattern area (54) knitted in advance. When the stitch position comes to the change-starting position (56) while the pattern area (54) being knitted, control means (43) controls a splicer (35) to change corns (32, 33 and 34) for feeding the knitting yarn (31) thereby to perform the yarn changes. The result of the yarn changes appears at a switch position (57) to become the boundary between the pattern area (54) and the pattern area (55), so that the different knitting yarns (31) can be fed and knitted from a common yarn feeder (25) to the pattern areas (54 and 55).
