Abstract

A navigation apparatus comprises a first map data storage device (16) for operating under a predetermined environmental condition and storing wide-area map data, a second map data storage device (18) for operating even under a more severe environmental condition than the predetermined environmental condition and storing part of the map data stored in the first map data storage section, a measurement section for measuring an environmental condition, a map data selection judging section (15) for judging whether the value expressing the environmental condition measured by the measurement section exceeds a predetermined threshold expressing the environmental condition under which the first map data storage device is operable, and a map data switching section (19) for, if it is indicated that the output of the map data selection judging section exceeds the predetermined threshold, reading out the map data from the second map data storage device.
