Abstract
Provided is an optical amplifier which can avoid output interruption as an optical amplifier even if optical output of excitation light is interrupted. The optical amplifier includes an amplification medium (2), a first excitation light supply unit (3), a second excitation light supply unit (4), a wavelength control unit (6) for varying and controlling the wavelength of the excitation light supplied by the second excitation light supply unit (4), and a monitor unit (5) which monitors the excitation light supplied by the first excitation light supply unit (3). The amplification medium (2) has an optical filter (7) for cutting off the excitation light of a reference wavelength band in a second wavelength band supplied from the output direction. According to the monitor result obtained by the monitor unit (5), the wavelength control unit (6) sets the wavelength of the excitation light supplied by the second excitation light supply unit (4) to be the reference wavelength band if the first excitation light supply unit (3) is in a normal operation state and controls the wavelength of the excitation light supplied by the second excitation light supply unit (4) to be out of the reference wavelength band if the first excitation light supply unit (3) is in an abnormal operation state.
