Abstract

A means is provided to effectively generate a defocus image in a three-dimensional CG, thereby making it possible to carry out a real time display. A two-dimensional image generating method to carry out a transparent transformation from an observer's viewing point for an object disposed in a view volume comprises the following steps: (a) dividing a space in the view volume into a plurality of voxels which are finer as they are closer to the observer's viewing point; (b) calculating a blurred amount on the retina of the observer's by tracking an optical path from the center of the voxels to the viewing point; (c) calculating and recording a range which corresponds to the blurred amount on the retina and where the tops are shifted in the voxels; (d) actually shifting the tops in accordance with the shifting ranges of the tops; and (e) generating the two-dimensional image viewed from the viewing point by a transparent transformation.
