Abstract

[PROBLEMS] To provide an image display device wherein a function of a projector is added while suppressing size increase of a main body shape and a laser beam is surely prevented from being applied to a human body, and to provide a portable terminal device. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] An image display device is provided with a laser light source (101); an optical system (diffraction lenses (103, 104) and polymer-dispersed liquid crystal element (105)) which can be switched to be in direct-view mode wherein a laser beam is modulated and displayed on a display section, and projection mode wherein the laser beam is modulated and projected on asurface on which the beam is to be projected; and a control circuit (liquid crystal driver (202)) for controlling the optical system. The control circuit is set in direct-view mode when the power supply is started.
