Abstract

Disclosed herein is a character input device. The character input device includes a base provided with an input region; an input unit configured to perform directional input for selecting any one of a plurality of direction indication locations, which are arranged radially around and spaced apart from a reference location within the input region; a central input key provided at a center of the input unit and configured to perform central input in response to pressing; directional input detection units configured to detect the directional input; a central input detection unit configured to detect the central input; and a control unit configured to extract a first character, assigned to each of the direction indication locations and the central input key, from a memory unit and input the first character, based on results of detection by the directional input detection units and the central input detection unit, and extract a second character, additionally assigned to each of the direction indication locations, from the memory unit and input the second character when central combination input, in which both the central input and the directional input are performed, is performed.
