Abstract

The invention relates to a fuel cell system comprising at least one fuel cell for generating electrical energy based on an electrochemical reaction of an oxidant which contains oxygen as the essential component, and a fuel which mainly contains hydrogen. Said system comprises a control device for controlling the operating state of fuel cells. The invention is characterized in that at least one fuel cell electrode comprises a carbonaceous catalyst support that is charged with a catalyst material, especially platinum. The operating range of one or more fuel cells of the fuel cell system is restricted by substantially limiting it to a range between approximately 0.2 V and 0.9 V. As a result, the corrosion rates for the electrodes are distinctly reduced and their life and efficiency is increased or maintained. Preferably, additional measures are taken to limit the dynamics of the voltage states of a fuel cell within the predetermined operating range and to thereby reduce the corrosion of the carbon support due to defects on the carbon support.
