Abstract

This invention provides compositions comprising a protein and an absorption enhancer, methods for treating a disease, comprising administering same, and methods for rectal administration of a protein. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a method for rectal administration of a protein having a molecular weight of up to 100,000 Daltons to a subject, whereby a substantial fraction of the protein retains its activity after absorption through a rectal mucosal barrier of a subject, comprising administering rectally to a subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising a protein and a chelating agent.
