Disclosed is a backlight (100) comprising a hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10). Specifically disclosed is a backlight (100) comprising a hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10) having a bulb (12), a base (50) provided on an end portion of the hot cathode fluorescent lamp (10), and a socket (40) to be connected with an external terminal (52) of the base (50). The external terminal (52) of the base (50) extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal direction (92) of the bulb (12) (for example, in a direction opposite to the screen direction (90)), and the socket (40) has a mechanism (45) for holding the external terminal (52) slidably along the longitudinal direction (92) of the bulb (12).
