Description
DIGITAL NOTEBOOK
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of writing systems. In particular, the present invention relates to an automated writing system. More in detail, the present invention relates to a digital writing system adapted to completely replace paper or similar materials. Even more in detail the present invention relates to a digital writing system adapted to allow the drafting and preparation of texts and/or the realization of drawings, drafts, tables, or the like in a way which is similar to what is done on a piece of paper and/or similar means or supports. In order to draft or prepare a text, a drawing or the like, the user of the system according to the present invention will have to perform operations which are similar to the operations which the same user would perform in order to prepare the same text or drawing etc. on a normal piece of paper such as, for example, a sheet, a notebook, or similar. The difference relates to the fact that said operations (writing of characters, words, or sentences, as well as the drawing of lines by hand or using a ruler as well as the realization of sketches) will be carried out using an appropriate instrument which is similar to a normal pen or pencil; however, said operations will not be performed on a classical medium, but rather on a screen of the system or of the device according to the present invention. The system and/or device according to the present invention is particularly adapted to be used in the didactic and/or scholastic sector as well as in other applications such as stenography and/or the like.
DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE OF ART
In the recent past, automated writing systems have been proposed, which essentially aimed to make available to the user an alternative medium to the classical one (paper or the like) so as to reduce as much as possible the use of paper and/or similar materials containing cellulose. Unfortunately, the proposed digital writing systems known in the state of art did not reveal themselves to be a valid alternative to the classical mediums. In particular, the alternative systems proposed up to now did not generate much interest in the educational and/or scholastic sector, where paper is still a largely employed medium in order to take
notes and/or perform homework or class work, by students as well as by teachers. The small success of alternatives known in the state of art, in particular of digital systems, is due to the fact that writing systems whose use is simple enough and immediate in order to satisfy the needs of a large number of users are not available on the market; furthermore the costs of known systems are often high and therefore they are too expensive for potential users.
Among the known digital systems, notebook computers, palms, organizers or PDAs may be cited in particular; said systems present however a number of disadvantages which make them not suited to satisfying the above mentioned needs. For example, the palms and the other devices cited above are very complicated devices which can perform a large number of functions, offering therefore, the possibility to perform different applications which often go beyond the typical needs of the educational sector. Furthermore, their complexity makes their use particularly difficult and therefore renders same not suited to a large number of users with little knowledge of digital systems. Furthermore, their complexity negatively influences their final costs so that even potential users feel discouraged and prefer not to buy this kind of systems.
Additionally, the palms and the other digital systems generally comprise an operating system which, on the one hand, guarantees a high flexibility of the system offering therefore, a wide field of applications to the user, and on the other hand presents a number of disadvantages which will be explained in detail below.
For example, an operating system such as the one implemented on a PC always presents the risk of a crash of the system which is a major inconvenience for a student if it happens during the lesson. Furthermore, due to its complexity, the operating system can considerably slow down the operation of the writing system, in particular during the starting phase not allowing therefore a rapid use of the instrument.
The palms and the other instruments of the kind cited above furthermore present a number of interfaces for the exchange of data with other instruments as well as through multimedia networks. This exchange of data can involve the risk of a propagation of viruses which can cause serious damage to the writing instrument; in particular, these viruses can cause the loss of important data stored on the memories of the writing instrument.
It has also to be noted that many of the functions offered by palms and by the other similar instruments are not strictly necessary for a writing system; these redundant functions slow down the functioning of the instrument and considerably increase the production costs so that they are not suited for use by a large number of users such as students and teachers.
It is therefore clear that there is a need for a digital device which can overcome the above- mentioned problems and/or disadvantages. In particular, it would be useful to have a digital device characterized by a limited number of functions which are directed to perform the operations typically needed during the drafting or preparation of a text and/or drawing or the like. It would therefore be useful to provide a digital writing system characterized by a short starting time and which therefore can be used shortly after the moment of the switch on. Furthermore, it would be useful to have a system which is not subject to system crashes, which could rapidly execute the available functions, which could be easily used, which would not be subject to the loss of data caused by a virus, which would be resistant to possible impacts and finally, which would be characterized by a cost affordable to a large number of users.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The scope of the present invention is therefore that of providing a writing system which achieves the objectives as described. In particular, it is a further scope of the present invention the realization of a writing device which allows to overcome, or at least to limit, the typical disadvantages of similar devices known from the state of art.
In order to achieve this scope, the present invention is based on the general consideration that an automated or automatic writing system, in order to be effectively rapid and easy to use, and therefore in order to represent a valid alternative to paper or similar supports, has to be characterized by a not too high number of operations, said operations being moreover easy and quick to understand as well as rapid to execute. In particular, the system must allow an easy and simple recording of the prepared texts. Furthermore, the recovery of a recorded text as well as the corrections and/or modifications of the same and the subsequently further memorization have to be executed in an easy, rapid, and reliable way. The menus with the options and/or alternatives which are available to the users should be
visualizable in a rapid and easy way; furthermore the execution of the visualized operations has to be rapid and easy.
According to the present invention said objective can be achieved by means of a digital writing system, which essentially comprises a screen on which it is possible to write (in the same way as one would do on normal paper) using a writing instrument having a point said pointer tip may have different levels of sharpness and may be similar to that of a pen or pencil. Moreover, the written text on the screen can automatically be introduced and stored in the device in a digital form by simply writing on the screen by means of said writing instrument. Furthermore, the digital text can be transferred in an easy and rapid way on a memory device which is extractable.
According to a particular embodiment of the present invention the text introduced into the device is saved as BITMAP file. A text which has been saved on an extractable memory can be read either by the same device which created the text itself, or by a second device according to the present invention simply by extracting the extractable memory from the first device and introducing it in the second one. The operations which are at the disposal of a user using the device according to the present invention are essentially but not necessarily limited to those required for the preparation, reading, modification and correction of a text or the like. Other operations such as for example the definitive recording of text, the transmission or delivery of same through a network (internet, intranet, etc.) may be given over to more complex devices or instruments such as PCs or similar. To this scope the extractable memories of the device according to the present invention can act as an interface to other devices according to the present invention or to devices such as PCs or similar. A text created using the device according to the present invention can therefore be read, recorded, sent by e-mail etc. by using, for example a PC, connecting the extractable memory of the device according to the present invention with said PC.
The system or device according to the present invention can therefore essentially work in a writing modus or in a reading modus. The texts or drawings are introduced into the system by touching the screen with an instrument or device similar to a pen. The data are then saved on a fixed storage support and subsequently transferred to extractable memories, which can be connected for example to a computer where the data can be recorded, visualized or printed. The system is managed by a control unit which is represented by a field programmable gate array (FPGA). This characteristic, besides the limited number of
implemented functions, allows a rapid execution of the instructions and a rapid switch on of the system with respect to other writing systems which employ an operating system. Furthermore, the writing system according to the present invention does not present the risk of a system crash as can be the case in other systems based on operating systems. The data can be introduced into the system through the screen or through the extractable memories, eliminating in this way the risk of viruses. The simplicity of the system allows, moreover, same to be produced at low cost.
According to a first embodiment, the present invention relates to a digital writing system as claimed in the main claim 1 , namely to a system which comprises a writing screen on which it is possible to write a text, a logic unit adapted to manage the operations and/or functions of the system, a fixed storage on which it is possible to temporarily record the text written on the screen, a plurality of extractable memory units on which the text which has been temporarily saved on the fixed storage can be transferred and a button which allows switching from the reading modus to the writing modus.
According to a further embodiment, the present invention relates to a system as claimed in claim 2, namely to a writing digital system wherein the logic unit is a field programmable gate array (FPGA).
According to still a further embodiment, the present invention relates to a device as claimed in claim 10, namely to a device wherein part of the extractable memory units can be employed in both the writing and reading mode, while at least one of the extractable memory units can be used only in the lecture mode.
According to a further embodiment, the present invention relates to a device as claimed in claim 16, namely to a device wherein the data of the extractable memory units can be memorized, read, and printed by a computer.
According to a further embodiment, the present invention relates to a device as claimed in claim 18, namely to a device wherein the writing and reading modes offer a number of functions which can be chosen from a menu by touching the screen.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Even if the present invention is described with reference to the embodiments illustrated in the following and depicted in the Figures, it should be noted that the present invention is not limited to the particular embodiments described in the following detailed description and depicted in the Figures, but rather that the described embodiments exemplify different aspects of the present invention, whose scope is defined in the claims.
In general, the present invention relates to a digital writing system. This system is particularly adapted to be employed in the educational and/or didactic field, as well as for similar scopes such as stenography, note-taking, realization of sketches or drawing, etc. The system has small dimensions, is easy to manage and impact resistant. The system according to the present invention has a small number of functions which are aimed to satisfy the needs of writing and storing texts or drawings. The functions of the system of the present invention will be described in detail below.
The system according to the present invention is provided with two function modes: writing and reading. During the writing mode it is possible to prepare texts or drawings (and afterward to enter or insert them into the system, so as to temporarily save same on the fixed or resident storage/memory of the system); this in particular is obtained by simply writing on the screen of the system by means of an instrument which is similar to a pen and in a way which is similar to the way according to which a classical medium such as paper and a normal pen or pencil are used. During the reading phase it is possible to visualize on the screen of the system texts or drawings previously memorized; it is furthermore possible to modify the texts, insert corrections, comments, etc. The system according to the present invention comprises a control unit which is represented by a "field programmable gate array" (FPGA) device. This device is programmable and is programmed to perform a limited number of functions in a rapid and reliable way.
The data entered by the user in the system by writing on the screen are, as already said, memorized on a fixed storage unit of the writing system and subsequently transferred to one of the extractable memory units. Through these extractable memory units, the system can exchange data with other systems of the same kind or the data can be read, memorized, and printed by a computer. To this end, it is enough to extract the extractable memory of interest and insert it in a similar device according to the present invention or connect it to another device, for example, to a computer. Therefore, in the case of employment of the device in educational and/or didactic sectors, and in particular in the case of school children, where pupils/students and teachers/professors/instructors are provided with devices according to the present invention, pupils/students can hand in homework and any other written exercises to the teacher by simply giving to the teacher an extractable memory of their device; the teacher can therefore check or correct the assignments (while also introducing marks or comments, etc.) simply by inserting the extractable memories, which the teacher/professor/instructor receives in his own device according to the present invention.
The system according to the present invention does not necessarily present other methods in order to exchange data. This allows using a very easy managing software and avoids the users the problems, which typically occur during the use of more complex devices.
thus preventing problems common to the use of more complex devices, and thus providing the user access to very easy-to-manage software.
The switch between the writing modus and the reading modus takes place by simply pressing a button which is located on the border of the same instrument. This guarantees fast and simple operations. When the reading modus is selected, the software asks the user to select one of the extractable memories.
In the following, some embodiments according to the present invention will be described in more detail with reference to Figures 1 to 4.
In Fig. 1 there is schematically shown a digital writing system (10) according to the present invention. The system is provided with a screen (11) through which it is possible to enter texts and drawings or the like into the system. In particular, this is obtained by simply writing on the screen the text or drawing which has to be memorized using an instrument similar to a pen. The data is firstly memorized on a fixed storage (12). Furthermore, it should be noted that the instrument used in order to write comprises a substantially spherical termination with a predefined radius. A typical measure of the radius corresponds to approximately 0.5 mm. However, other measures (other diameters) are possible; the writing mark therefore, depends on the contact surface (on the diameter) of the spherical termination with the screen but it will be independent from the pressure exercised on the screen or display.
All the functions of the system are managed by a programmable logic unit (13), which according to a particular embodiment of the present invention, comprises a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The logic unit controls also an interface program with the user, to be described in detail in the following. The system is furthermore provided with a number of extractable memory units (14, 15, 16, 17) which are connected to the fixed storage (12) and on which the data are transferred from the fixed storage when a document is finished and/or completed. According to a particular embodiment of the present invention the number of extractable memories is four as shown in Fig. 1. Other embodiments can however, have a different number of extractable memories. To each memory corresponds a light emitting diode (LED) (23) which comes on when the corresponding memory is in use.
According to a particular embodiment of the present invention three extractable memories (14, 15 and 16) can work in the writing mode as well as in the reading mode; this means that for each of these three extractable memories, it is possible to memorize texts which have been written through the screen of the system, as well as read memorized texts (even using
other devices according to the present invention). On the contrary, the extractable memory (17) may be programmed to work in the reading modus only. This means that on this memory, it is, in principle, not possible to save texts or drawings entered through the display. The extractable memory (17) is mainly used to visualize educational materials and contents realized by publishing companies or other entities which are active in the educational field. In particular, it is possible to visualize educational material in the form of E-books. On the extractable memory (17), all the operations which can normally be performed on a paper book are allowed; these operations comprise underlining, inserting notes, inserting a book mark, etc.
The extractable memories which can work both in the writing mode and in the reading mode, can be connected to an external computer where other data can be memorized, visualized or printed, transferred or transmitted by e-mail, etc., eventually along with other data previously memorized and/or saved.
The writing system according to the present invention is not necessarily configured to be interfaced or connected with other systems or communication networks; normally the system is interfaced with other systems through the extractable memories. The usual ways in order to enter data in the writing system according to the present invention are therefore writing on the display or screen and connect extractable memories of other systems to the system.
On the frame of the writing system according to the present invention a plurality of buttons is located as shown in Fig. 1. In particular, these comprise a switch-on button (on/off) (19), a button to switch between the writing mode and the reading mode (20), a button to go to the next page (21) and finally a button to go to the previous page (22). Furthermore, each of these buttons is provided with a LED (24) in order to show if the corresponding function is active or not.
According to a particular embodiment of the device according to the present invention, it is possible to select a layout of the screen (11) during both the writing and reading modes. The system is typically provided with three different types of layout: a first one squared, a second one lined, and a third one plain or without pattern. This layout has the scope to facilitate writing on the screen (11). In particular, the choice of the layout is made by the user when the device is switched on; furthermore, the choice of the layout implies the choice of the extractable memory (see the description below) on which the text will be saved.
According to other embodiments of the present invention, other types of layout are possible such as layouts with borders, etc. In a particular embodiment according to the present invention, it will be possible to write on one of the four extractable memories using both a lined layout or a squared layout. On this first extractable memory (14), it should be possible to write also with any other type of layout. A second extractable memory (15) will be used to copy all the data which are on the previous memory and which represents a copy of the previous memory. The data are transferred from the first extractable memory to the second extractable memory using a transfer function. The second extractable memory which represents a copy, can be used by the teacher in order to have on one of his own extractable memory the assignments, that the student did. The third extractable memory (16) can be used as a diary and it would therefore be possible to insert notes as on a traditional diary/agenda. This third memory is provided with a diary layout. Finally, the fourth extractable memory (17) can be used only in the reading mode and it will be essentially used for didactic contents as E-books.
It is clear from Fig. 1 that the system according to the present invention comprises a high resolution display of 12,1" included in an external structure made for example of a magnesium alloy. However, other sizes for the display or screen are possible without leaving the scope of the present invention. In the same way other materials can be used as an alternative to magnesium alloy for the realization of the external box, as for example equivalent materials which are characterized by lightness and resistance or hardiness. According to a further embodiment of the present invention, the battery is a battery using lithium ions.
The display lies preferably on the same level of the external border so that it is possible to work without problems on the display even using rulers and set squares or similar instruments. The display is furthermore provided with the functionality "touch screen" so that the instruction can be provided by simply pressing on the display. For example, by pressing with opportune pressure an icon of the screen, it will be possible to visualize the menu of the operations and/or instructions corresponding to said icon and by further touching it is possible to activate a predetermined function and/or visualize further instructions and/or operations.
The digital writing system according to the present invention comprises an interface software which allows the user to interact with the system using a pen or similar. Furthermore, the
system according to the present invention comprises a software to recognize the writing. During the switch-on phase, the writing system according to the present invention is automatically in the writing modus. In order to switch from the writing modus to the reading modus, it is necessary to press the button (20).
During the writing modus an icon appears on the screen of the system. By touching the icon a menu is opened wherein all the functions available to the user during the writing mode are displayed. As anticipated above, as soon as the writing modus is started, the interface software asks the user to select one of the possible layouts, for example squared, lined, or plain (without any pattern). The interface software, furthermore, asks the user to select one of the extractable memories which can work in the reading/writing mode. In the particular embodiment of the present invention, furthermore the interface software asks the user to enter the title of the new document that has to be written.
Fig. 2, in which the parts previously described are identified by the same reference numerals, schematically shows the writing system according to the present invention during the writing mode.
By touching the icon (25) a menu (70) opens, in which are listed the available functions, which will now be described in more detail.
By touching, for example with a pen, the different boxes of the menu (70), it is possible to select the different functions belonging to said menu. These functions comprise: a function "color" (31) allowing to choose the color of the text as part of it; the function "bold" (32) allowing to write in bold a part of the selected text, the function "underline" (33) allowing to underline part of the text, the function "highlight" (34) allowing to highlight part of the text, the function "cancel" (35) allowing to cancel part of a test or drawing, the function "save" (36) allowing to memorize a text or drawing on the fixed storage, the function "transfer" (37) allowing to transfer data from the fixed storage to one of the extractable memory, the function "next page" (38) allowing to go to the next page of the text, and the function "previous page" (39) allowing to go to the previous page. According to other embodiments of the present invention, further functions of the writing mode can be available to the user. Moreover, and still according to a further embodiment of the present invention, the data on the fixed storage can be transferred to the extractable memory and saved therein, eventually together with time data such as the date and the hour.
In Fig. 3 there is schematically shown the writing system according to the present invention in the reading mode. During the reading mode, the icon (26) appears on the screen. By touching the icon (for example using a pen or simply with a finger) a menu opens with a number of functions, similar to what happens during the writing mode. To switch between the writing mode and the reading mode, it is sufficient to press the button (20). The activation of the reading modus is shown by the switching on of the LED (24) which is related to the button (20). At the beginning of the writing mode, the interface software asks the user to select one of the extractable memories which are available.
According to a particular embodiment of the present invention, the functions available during the reading modus comprise: the function "search" (51) allowing to search for a word in the text, the function "go to page" (52) allowing to select the page that should be visualized, the function "go to date" (53) which allows to select a date and to find the documents, which have been memorized on a certain day, the function "zoom" (54) which allows to enlarge or reduce part of the texts, the function "bookmark" (55), with which it is possible to insert a bookmark symbol on the page of interest, the function "insert a note" (56) by means of which it is possible to insert a note at a given position of a text, the function "modify note" (57) allowing to modify a note which was previously inserted, the function "highlights" (58) by means of which it is possible to highlight a part of the text ( this function is similar to the corresponding function already described in the writing mode), the function "underline" (59) allowing to underline part of the text, and finally the function "save" (60) by means of which it is possible to save the text with the selected options.
Fig. 4, wherein as usual, parts, components, or functions previously described are identified by the same reference numerals, schematically shows the way of working of the memory systems of the device according to the present invention.
It appears from Figure 4, that the data entered through the screen is initially memorized on the fixed storage unit (12); subsequently, on the base of the instruction given by the user through the screen (11) (managed by the control unit (13)), the data are transferred in one of the extractable memories (14, 15, 16) which may work both in the writing modus as well as in the reading modus.
With the previous description, it has therefore been demonstrated that the device according to the present invention allows to achieve the desired scopes; moreover, the device
according to the present invention allows to overcome the disadvantages affecting similar devices known in the art. In particular it has been demonstrated that the device according to the present invention is characterized by being easy to use and by having, at the same time, a very high versatility and reliability. The realization of a text using the device according to the present invention results therefore simple and immediate also for those users which are not willing to use more complex devices and which are not used to use their multiple functions. The ease of writing, the simplicity of the memorizing operations, as well as of the interface operations with other devices make the device according to the present invention a valid alternative to paper, allowing the employment of the same in the didactic, press, editorial, sector, as well as for other scopes like stenography and/or similar.
Further changes and variations of the present invention will be clear to the skilled person from the previous description. The present description should be considered to comprise all the modifications and/or variations of the present invention whose scope is defined by the claims.
