Definitions
- the invention relates to an airbag system with an inflator.
- Such airbag systems are used in motor vehicles as safety devices. Usually, upon detection of a crash (crashes) the propellant charges of the inflator are ignited so that the airbag is inflated as quickly as possible.
- a very high gas flow rate for inflating the airbag must be spontaneously generated, so that the airbag deploys at a very high speed. This high inflation speed can lead to injuries, in particular in the event that the vehicle occupants are children. But even with other vehicle occupants, the spontaneous, explosive inflation is disadvantageous. However, this must be taken into account, otherwise the airbag would not inflated quickly enough after the collision to intercept the impact of the occupant.
- the inflator multi-stage For example, in a child as a vehicle occupant only one or a portion of the propellant gas levels of the inflator are activated to prevent over-inflation of the air-bag which could injure the child.
- JP 7132793 A describes a so-called precrash sensor system which, on the basis of the measurement of differential speeds between the motor vehicle and the possible collision object, makes it possible to predict whether a collision will occur before the motor vehicle touches the respective object.
- Object of the present invention is to develop a generic airbag system such that the potential risk of injury during the dynamic inflation process of the airbag for the vehicle occupant is largely minimized.
- an airbag system which comprises an inflator with at least two individually activatable stages.
- a crash detector In the event that a so-called pre-crash state is detected by a crash detector, at least two stages of the inflator are activated one behind the other. On the other hand, if the crash detector already detects the collision, these stages of the inflator are simultaneously activated in parallel.
- This solution according to the invention makes it possible to allow the amount of gas necessary for inflating the airbag to flow into the airbag over a longer period of time.
- the dynamics of the inflation process of the airbag is mitigated, that is, the Aufblasgasfluß is reduced.
- the stages of the inflator are simultaneously activated in parallel, since then there is not enough time available to inflate the airbag over the different stages consecutively. Preferred embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the subsequent claims to the main claim.
- two stages of a two-stage inflator can be activated one behind the other in such a way that the second stage is ignited only after the first stage has been burned off.
- the second stage is already ignited if the first stage has not yet burned down.
- the periods during which two stages of the inflator generate the propellant to inflate the airbag overlap.
- the second stage of the inflator can preferably be activated if, after the determination of the pre-crash condition, the onset of the collision is detected by a further sensor. In this case, it is important that the airbag is inflated as quickly as possible from the time of the collision with the highest possible flow of gas.
- the inflator is formed in two stages, both stages are the same size and thus generate the same time the propellant gas.
- the inflator may also be designed in multiple stages, wherein the stages may also be designed differently sized.
- an adaptive ventilation opening may be provided, which already diverts a portion of the propellant gas used for inflation in the environment, so that the airbag is not fully filled and is therefore softer on impact.
- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a two-stage inflator, as used in the airbag system according to the invention and
- FIG. 2 a diagram in which the pressure of the airbag is plotted over the filling time in order to clarify the present invention.
- FIG. 1 by way of example, a two-stage inflator 10 is shown in which the two stages are formed in the two different chambers 12 and 14.
- the structure of such inflators 10 is well known in the art, so it need not be detailed here.
- the realized in the chambers 12 and 14 stages are the same size here, so that they develop gas over the same period of time.
- the inflator is activated shortly after the collision.
- This activation time takes place at point 28, for example 5 milliseconds after the collision.
- the two stages I and II of the inflator would ignite simultaneously, so that the time required to fill the airbag amount of gas in the shortest possible time, that is inflated within 35 milliseconds in the present embodiment.
- the slope of the gas pressure curve 30 is therefore relatively steep, which means that the airbag is inflated explosively up to its filling point 26. It was already known to avoid too tight inflation of the airbag by means of adaptive ventilation openings, so that only a lower pressure is present in the airbag. This inflation dynamics results from the curve 32 in FIG. 2.
- a precrash situation can be determined via a corresponding precrash sensor.
- the collision can be predicted up to a time of about -60 milliseconds via the pre-crash sensor.
- a pre-crash situation is established at time 22, that is to say at -40 milliseconds.
- the stage I of the inflator that is to say the propellant charge present in the chamber 12 of the inflator 10
- the stage II of the inflator 10 that is, the propellant is ignited in the chamber 14, so that is achieved with approximately the same gas formation rate of the Aufblasverlauf 20 until reaching the point 26 after the crash.
- an airbag is inflated twice the time with the same amount of gas, so that the gas flow rate is halved and the course of the Gas Schollkurve 20 has a lower slope than the conventional Be Schollungsstromverlauf in the event that the ignition only at the time of the collision or shortly after the collision occurs.
- the ignition of the stages I and II of the inflator 10 may overlap. This is particularly possible if the curve 20 has not yet burned out during the inflation of the first stage I of the inflator 10 when the collision occurs. For example, by the signal of the collision, the second stage II of the inflator 10 can be ignited, so that for the time interval of the overlapping gas evolution through the stages I and II, the slope of the gas formation rate representing curve 20 increases again.
- the airbag in a manner also not shown in FIG. 2, in the event that a child is seated on the vehicle seat, the airbag can only be inflated via one step, for example the step I, of the inflator, so that the airbag can be inflated. is filled with a smaller amount of gas and is softer on the impact of the child.

Description
Airbagsystem
